Claude Architect Exams Compared: CCAR-F vs CCAR-P

The names suggest a ladder. The evidence suggests otherwise. Here is what actually separates Anthropic’s two Claude architect exams, and why passing one tells you less about the other than you would expect.

Anthropic offers two architect certifications. Foundations costs $125. Professional costs $175. Professional sounds harder.

The best first-hand account available says it is not.

What the passer said

A candidate with four to five years of AI systems experience, who uses Claude Code to build production systems daily, published a detailed breakdown after passing CCAR-P. His summary of the difficulty:

Moderately easy. Not a walk in the park, but noticeably easier than the Architect Foundations exam. If you have already cleared Foundations, my honest advice is don’t overthink it, just go straight for the Professional exam.

And on scope:

You need real architectural understanding of how these systems work end to end, but the exam doesn’t go as deep as Foundations does. If you’ve got production experience with agentic systems or RAG pipelines, you’re already most of the way there.

Caveat, stated plainly: that is one account, from someone experienced. It is not a survey. Anthropic publishes no pass-rate data for either exam, so nobody can settle this with numbers. Treat it as the best available evidence rather than a proven fact, and calibrate against your own background.

Why it holds up against the blueprints

The claim is surprising, but it is consistent with what Anthropic publishes. These two exams test different things, and only one of them tests them deeply.

Foundations is a hands-on implementation exam. It asks about the CLAUDE.md hierarchy, the isError flag on MCP tool responses, stop_reason handling in agentic loops, and the -p flag for running Claude Code headless in CI. Those are things you know because you have typed them.

Professional is an architecture judgment exam. RAG chunking and indexing strategy, observability at scale, GDPR and HIPAA and FedRAMP, SLAs, and how you explain a trade-off to the executive funding it. Those are things you know because you have delivered systems.

They are not a ladder

Roughly 21% of Professional, meaning Stakeholder Communication and Lifecycle Management plus part of Governance, has no counterpart at all in Foundations. Meanwhile Foundations spends 20% on Claude Code configuration, which Professional touches only lightly inside a 7% domain.

So passing one transfers less than the naming implies, in both directions. And Anthropic confirms there is no requirement either way. Its FAQ says “Foundations is the natural place to start and there’s no formal prerequisite, so you can take Professional without holding Foundations.”

Which should you take?

Take Foundations if you design systems and also implement them. You have built with the Agent SDK, configured CLAUDE.md for a real repository, designed MCP tools, and run Claude Code in a pipeline. Just do not assume it is the gentler exam. On the available evidence it is the harder one.

Take Professional if you own delivery end to end at enterprise scale, with production agentic or RAG experience behind you. And weight your study toward the non-technical half. The same passer said the technical tooling questions were the intuitive ones and that “the main things to actually study are the governance and security tradeoff scenarios, since those are less intuitive.” Governance and stakeholder work is 28% of that exam combined.

Take both if your firm counts certifications toward Partner Network tier standing. Both do. Two credentials for $300 is inexpensive next to what a tier promotion is worth to a services business.

Two things to know before either exam

Foundations has a documented weak spot. A candidate who scored 886 overall got 50% on Prompt Engineering and Structured Output, which is 20% of the exam. Do not assume you have that domain covered because you prompt daily. It tests structured output enforcement rather than conversation.

Professional has a documented question trap. Some items ask what you would do at a step, then follow up asking what you would do before that process, with the process named only in the question’s first line. Read the setup twice.
