Claude Certified Architect: The Complete Guide to CCAR-F and CCAR-P

A woman architect and a friendly robot assistant unrolling a glowing blueprint on a drafting table

Claude Certified Architect is Anthropic’s certification for people who design and build production systems with Claude, and it comes in two levels: Claude Certified Architect: Foundations (CCAR-F, $125) and Claude Certified Architect: Professional (CCAR-P, $175). Both are proctored, 120-minute exams delivered by Pearson VUE with a passing score of 720, and only employees of Claude Partner Network member companies can register.

That last point surprises most people. There is no public sign-up and a personal email won’t work. Below is everything Anthropic publishes about the Claude architect certification at both levels: format, blueprints, eligibility, renewal, retakes and free prep, plus how they compare with the architect-level AI certifications from AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud.

What the Claude Certified Architect certification is

Anthropic runs a role-based Claude Certification Program with three roles: Associate, Developer and Architect. Architect is the only role with two levels, Foundations and Professional. For all four exams side by side, see our Claude certification overview.

Architect: Foundations came first. Anthropic launched it on March 12, 2026, alongside the Claude Partner Network, as its first technical certification. Architect: Professional followed with Anthropic’s July 23, 2026 announcement, which presented it as the advanced credential, covering integration architecture, governance and evaluation at large-enterprise scale.

Both architect exams count toward a partner firm’s tier standing in the Claude Partner Network. (The Associate exam does not.) That is why partner firms push their people to certify: the number of certified practitioners is one of the published requirements for each partner tier. Anthropic said in July 2026 that more than 36,000 consultants at more than 1,300 organizations had been certified since March.

One naming note: Anthropic’s exam guide uses the code CCAR-F. You may see “CCA-F” on other sites, but that code does not appear in Anthropic’s exam materials.

Foundations vs Professional: who each level is for

The two levels test different skills. Foundations is about building. Professional is about designing, integrating and governing at enterprise scale.

Claude Certified Architect: Foundations (CCAR-F)

Anthropic’s guide describes the ideal candidate as a solution architect who designs and implements production applications with Claude. The typical candidate has 6+ months of hands-on work with the Claude API, the Claude Agent SDK, Claude Code and Model Context Protocol (MCP).

It is a hands-on implementation exam. The published task statements cover agentic loops and multi-agent orchestration, CLAUDE.md configuration, MCP tool design, structured output with JSON schemas, context management, escalation patterns, and running Claude Code in CI/CD pipelines.

Claude Certified Architect: Professional (CCAR-P)

CCAR-P targets mid- to senior-level solution architects, AI/ML engineers, technical leads and senior software engineers who deliver production AI systems at enterprise scale. Anthropic recommends 3+ years in systems architecture or platform engineering plus 6+ months of hands-on production work with Claude or a comparable LLM system.

The guide says it is not meant for entry-level developers, casual users, or prompt-writing roles without broader system design responsibility. Expect architecture judgment: model selection, RAG design, integration and security trade-offs, evaluation, compliance, and explaining decisions to stakeholders.

CCAR-F exam blueprint (Anthropic’s published outline)

The CCAR-F exam guide (version 1.0, effective July 2026) lists five weighted domains. Each weight is the approximate share of scored items.

DomainWeight
1. Agentic Architecture & Orchestration27%
2. Tool Design & MCP Integration18%
3. Claude Code Configuration & Workflows20%
4. Prompt Engineering & Structured Output20%
5. Context Management & Reliability15%

The six scenarios in the published bank are Customer Support Resolution Agent, Code Generation with Claude Code, Multi-Agent Research System, Developer Productivity with Claude, Claude Code for Continuous Integration, and Structured Data Extraction. Four of them appear on any given exam.

The guide also lists topics that will not appear, which saves study time. They include fine-tuning, API authentication and billing, deploying or hosting MCP servers, computer use, vision, streaming, rate limits and pricing, and cloud-provider-specific configuration. Our CCAR-F study guide walks through every task statement.

CCAR-P exam blueprint (Anthropic’s published outline)

The CCAR-P exam guide (version 1.0, effective July 2026) lists seven weighted domains. The examples below are drawn from its published objectives.

DomainWeightExamples from the published objectives
1. Solution Design & Architecture17%Turning business problems into Claude solutions, choosing workflow, agentic or augmented LLM patterns, multi-agent design
2. Claude Models, Prompting & Context Engineering13%Model selection trade-offs, system prompts and guardrails, context windows and token usage, prompt reuse (caching, modular prompts, Skills)
3. Integration19%Tool and agent capability bloat, authentication and authorization gaps, RAG chunking and indexing, choosing between MCP, API/CLI and agent-to-agent
4. Evaluation, Testing & Optimization16%Evaluation metrics and datasets, A/B testing, diagnosing hallucinations and prompt failures, cost and latency trade-offs
5. Governance, Safety & Risk Management14%Guardrails, LLM failure modes, human-in-the-loop validation, regulations such as GDPR, HIPAA and FedRAMP

7. Developer Productivity & Operational Enablement7%Configuring Claude Code and other tools for teams, AI-assisted developer workflows, operational troubleshooting

Governance and stakeholder communication together make up 28% of CCAR-P, and neither has a matching domain on Foundations. Our CCAR-P study guide covers each objective.

Prerequisites: do you need Foundations first?

No. Neither exam has a formal prerequisite. Anthropic’s FAQ calls Foundations the natural place to start, but you can take Professional without holding Foundations, and Foundations does not upgrade to Professional automatically. They are separate certifications with separate exams and separate fees.

The CCAR-P guide says the same thing: no mandatory prerequisites or courses, and the credential is awarded on exam performance alone. The experience levels in both guides are recommendations, not entry requirements.

The one requirement you can’t skip is eligibility.

Who can take it: eligibility and registration

Anthropic’s FAQ is direct: certification is available to people at Claude Partner Network organizations, and customers and non-partners can’t currently certify. In practice that means three things.

  • A company email on a recognized domain. You register with your work email, and its domain must be on your company’s partner record. Personal email addresses are refused. If your domain is missing, Anthropic’s partner support team can add it, which takes 7 to 10 days, so ask well before your exam date.
  • Age 18 or older, checked against your government-issued ID at check-in.
  • Your company must be in the network. Joining the Claude Partner Network is free, and any organization bringing Claude to market can apply. New applicants start at the Registered tier, with a minimum commitment to 10 certified practitioners.

Registration runs through Anthropic Partner Academy and Pearson VUE:

  1. Open the exam’s page on Partner Academy and download the exam guide, the Certification Terms and Conditions and the Certification Exam Policy.
  2. Register and pay by credit card. Any partner-tier discount is applied automatically at checkout.
  3. Watch for the email with your Pearson VUE link, create your Pearson account, and schedule the exam online or at a test center.

Anthropic’s FAQ says a registration stays valid for five years, so you don’t have to sit the exam right away.

What you’ll pay: Registered-tier partners pay full price. Select, Preferred and Global Premier partners get 50% off, and Global Premier partners get 100% off all exams through December 31, 2026. Bulk vouchers aren’t available yet. The CCAR-F price rose from $99 to $125 on June 30, 2026. See what each Claude exam costs and how partner discounts and vouchers work.

Exam delivery: Pearson VUE and Credly

Since June 30, 2026, Pearson VUE delivers both architect exams and Credly issues the badges. Before that date the exams ran on a different proctoring platform, so older posts may describe a process that no longer exists.

  • Online or in person: OnVUE online proctoring, or a Pearson test center.
  • Timing: 120 minutes of exam time, about 135 minutes in your seat including check-in and a short survey.
  • Closed book: no notes, documentation, AI assistants or browser translation tools.
  • Language: English only, for both the exam and the prep content.
  • Results: your scaled score and pass or fail show on screen, and the score report gives the percentage you got right in each domain.
  • Badge: if you pass, Credly emails you to claim your badge, usually within minutes for online exams.

Location limits: candidates with IDs from Belarus, Cuba, North Korea, Russia, Syria or restricted regions of Ukraine can’t use online proctoring and must test at a center. Pearson suspended delivery for residents of Iran from September 8, 2026.

Rescheduling and cancelling: Anthropic’s FAQ and policy page say you can change or cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before your appointment, while the exam guides say 24 hours. Plan on 48 to be safe. Cancelling inside Pearson does not refund you on its own; you request the refund from Anthropic’s certification support. Later changes and no-shows forfeit the fee.

How long it’s valid, and how renewal works

Both architect certifications are valid for 12 months from the date you earn them. Credentials earned before June 30, 2026 under the old 6-month rule were extended to 12 months automatically.

On-time renewal is free. Before your expiry date, you pass an open-book, non-proctored online assessment on Anthropic Partner Academy. You can retake it as often as you need, and passing extends your certification 12 months from your current expiration date. If you let it lapse, you have to pass the full exam again at the full fee.

Two caveats from Anthropic: if an exam changes substantially, holders may need to pass the current version, and full renewal details will be shared before the first certifications come up for renewal. More in how Claude certification renewal works.

The certification belongs to you, not your employer, and it stays with you if you change jobs. Anthropic suggests adding a personal email to your Credly profile so you keep access to your badge.

Retake rules

If you don’t pass, the waiting period grows with each failed attempt.

Failed attemptWait before the next attempt
1st14 days
2nd30 days
3rd90 days
  • You can take the same exam at most 4 times in any rolling 12 months.
  • Every attempt costs the full exam fee, with your partner-tier discount applied.
  • Limits apply per exam, so failing CCAR-F doesn’t stop you from registering for CCAR-P.
  • Waiting periods and attempt counts reset when an exam moves to a new version.
  • You can’t retake an exam you passed to raise your score.

Use the per-domain percentages on your score report to decide what to study before a retake.

Free official prep from Anthropic

Anthropic Partner Academy has free prep for both levels, but the coverage is very different.

CCAR-F: seven existing courses

  • AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations
  • Building with the Claude API
  • Claude on Google Cloud
  • Claude Code in Action
  • Claude 101
  • Claude with Amazon Bedrock
  • Introduction to Model Context Protocol

The CCAR-F exam guide adds 12 sample questions with explanations and 4 hands-on preparation exercises. Anthropic retired its separate practice exam when delivery moved to Pearson.

CCAR-P: a dedicated five-lesson path

LessonLength
Claude Platform & Solution Design238 minutes
Enterprise Integration & Production158 minutes
Responsible AI, Safety & Risk for Architects114 minutes

That is about 12 hours in total. Anthropic recommends six courses before you start the path: Claude 101, Claude Code in Action, AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, Building with the Claude API, Introduction to Model Context Protocol, and AI Capabilities and Limitations. The CCAR-P guide itself includes 3 sample questions.

How to prepare: a plan built from the published guides

Anthropic doesn’t guarantee that any single resource gets you a pass, and neither do we. The plan below is built from the preparation steps, exercises and sample questions in the two exam guides.

CCAR-F in four weeks

WeekFocusWhat to do
1Agentic Architecture & Orchestration (27%)Build an agent with the Claude Agent SDK: a complete agentic loop with tool calling, error handling, session management and subagents. Do guide exercises 1 (multi-tool agent with escalation logic) and 4 (multi-agent research pipeline).
2Claude Code Configuration & Workflows (20%) and Tool Design & MCP Integration (18%)Configure Claude Code for a real project: a CLAUDE.md hierarchy, path-specific rules, custom skills and at least one MCP server. Write MCP tool descriptions that separate similar tools, with structured error responses. Do exercise 2.
3Prompt Engineering & Structured Output (20%) and Context Management & Reliability (15%)Build an extraction pipeline with tool use, JSON schemas, validation-retry loops and the Message Batches API. Practice few-shot examples, multi-pass reviews, context trimming and escalation decisions. Do exercise 3.
4ReviewWork the guide’s 12 sample questions, self-assess against every task statement, and check the out-of-scope list so you don’t over-study. Then test yourself with timed practice questions.

The full version is in how to pass CCAR-F.

CCAR-P: what the guide asks you to do

  • Self-assess against every objective in the blueprint, starting with Integration (19%) and Solution Design & Architecture (17%).
  • Review Anthropic’s documentation for the Claude API, models, prompt engineering, MCP and Skills.
  • Build and operate at least one end-to-end Claude solution that includes RAG, evaluation and observability.
  • Practice architecture decisions: model selection, integration protocols and security trade-offs.
  • Work through the free five-lesson prep path and the guide’s sample questions.

Don’t underweight the non-technical domains: governance and stakeholder communication are 28% of the exam. Our 6-week CCAR-P plan lays it out week by week.

About our practice questions

Our CCAR-F practice questions and CCAR-P practice questions are original. We write them from Anthropic’s published exam guides and weight them to the official blueprints. They are not real exam questions, and nothing on this site comes from a live exam.

Every candidate accepts a non-disclosure agreement before the exam starts, so anything sold as “real” exam questions breaks it and puts your certification at risk. Here is why you don’t need dumps.

What if your company isn’t a Claude partner?

Then you can’t register for either architect exam right now. Anthropic doesn’t offer an individual route or publish a waitlist, and a personal email won’t get you past sign-in. Its FAQ says plainly that customers and non-partners can’t currently certify.

Your realistic options:

  • Ask your employer to join. Joining the Claude Partner Network is free for any organization bringing Claude to market, but it comes with a minimum commitment to 10 certified practitioners. It’s a company decision, not a form you fill in for yourself.
  • Learn the material anyway. Anthropic links both exam guides from its Partner Academy certification page. Several CCAR-F prep course titles, including Building with the Claude API, Claude Code in Action and Introduction to Model Context Protocol, also appear in Anthropic’s public course catalog. Claude Academy, Anthropic’s public learning site, is free with a free Claude account.
  • Know what a course badge is. Claude Academy certificates of completion are not the certification. Anthropic says they are two different things: Academy badges are free and earned by passing course quizzes, while the certification is a paid, proctored exam available only to partners.

If you want a proctored AI credential you can book yourself today, the AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud exams in the next section are open to anyone. More detail in who can take the Claude certification and is the Claude certification worth it.

How it compares with other architect-level AI certifications

AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud details checked against aws.amazon.com, learn.microsoft.com and cloud.google.com on October 6, 2026. Microsoft prices are US prices and vary by country.

What stands out:

  • Access: the Claude exams are the only ones here limited to employees of partner companies.
  • Cost: CCAR-F is the cheapest on the list at $125. CCAR-P, at $175, sits just above Microsoft’s $165, and partner discounts can cut both Claude prices in half or more.
  • Validity: Claude, Microsoft and Google all use one year. AWS is the outlier at three years. See which AI certifications expire.
  • Prerequisites: both Microsoft exams require an associate certification first. Claude, AWS and Google don’t.
  • Platform: each one tests its own vendor’s stack, so the right pick depends on what your clients or employer run.

Is the Claude Certified Architect worth it?

If you work at a partner firm, the case is simple. Certified practitioner counts feed your firm’s tier standing, both architect exams count, and on-time renewal is free. Anthropic also says firms across the network are prioritizing certification when they hire.

Anthropic publishes no pass rates or salary data, and we won’t invent any. For the full argument, read is the Claude certification worth it.

No. Only people at Claude Partner Network member organizations can register, using a company email on a domain recognized on the partner record. Personal emails are refused, and Anthropic says customers and non-partners can't currently certify.

How hard is the CCAR-P exam?

Anthropic publishes no pass rates, so there is no hard data. CCAR-P has 63 questions in 120 minutes, needs a scaled 720 to pass, and is aimed at mid- to senior-level architects; Anthropic recommends 3+ years of systems architecture experience and 6+ months of production LLM work. About 28% of it covers governance and stakeholder communication, so technical skill alone is not enough.

How long is the Claude Certified Architect certification valid?

12 months from the date you earn it. On-time renewal is free: you pass an open-book online assessment on Anthropic Partner Academy, which extends it another 12 months. If it lapses, you have to retake the full exam at full price.

Do I need CCAR-F before taking CCAR-P?

No. Anthropic says there is no formal prerequisite, so you can take Architect: Professional without holding Architect: Foundations. Foundations is the suggested starting point, and it does not upgrade to Professional automatically.

How many questions are on the Claude Certified Architect exam?

CCAR-F has 60 multiple-choice and multiple-response items built around 4 scenarios drawn from a bank of 6. CCAR-P has 63 items. Both give you 120 minutes and use a scaled passing score of 720 on a range of 100 to 1,000.

Is there a Claude Certified Architect practice exam?

Anthropic retired its practice exam when delivery moved to Pearson VUE on June 30, 2026. The official exam guides now carry the sample questions: 12 for CCAR-F and 3 for CCAR-P. Our free practice questions are original, written from those published guides, and are not real exam questions.

Is CCA-F the same as CCAR-F?

Anthropic's own exam guide uses the code CCAR-F for Claude Certified Architect: Foundations and CCAR-P for Claude Certified Architect: Professional. CCA-F appears on some third-party sites, but it is not a code used in Anthropic's exam materials.
