How to Pass NVIDIA NCA-AIIO: A 3-Week Study Plan
About 28 hours over three weeks, weighted to the three domains on NVIDIA’s published blueprint. As of September 2026, NVIDIA lists NCA-AIIO at 125 USD, 50 questions in 60 minutes, online with remote proctoring. There is no published passing score; NVIDIA reports pass or fail only.
This is the infrastructure-side associate exam. It is aimed at the people who rack, network, provision and operate GPU systems rather than the people who train models on them. NVIDIA lists a basic understanding of data center infrastructure as its only prerequisite. If you have run a virtualization or storage environment, most of the operations vocabulary will already be familiar, and the new material is GPU-specific.
My own background is VMware and networking, and reading the blueprint from that side, the honest summary is that two of the three domains reward existing infrastructure experience. The one that does not is the AI concepts domain, and it is 38% of the exam.

Before week one: two things
Read the exam blueprint and the exam study guide PDF on the NCA-AIIO certification page. NVIDIA also lists a self-paced course, AI Infrastructure and Operations Fundamentals, as the certification learning path for this exam, and puts its typical completion time at seven hours. It is the official starting point.
Know the weights, because this plan follows them.
| Domain | Weight | Plan hours |
|---|---|---|
| Essential AI Knowledge | 38% | 9.5 |
| AI Infrastructure | 40% | 10 |
| AI Operations | 22% | 5.5 |
That is 25 hours of study plus about 3 hours of practice and review in week 3.
Week 1: essential AI knowledge (about 9.5 hours)
Start with the domain that infrastructure people find least natural. At 38%, it can sink you on its own.
- Work through the AI Infrastructure and Operations Fundamentals course, front to back. It is self-paced and it tracks the blueprint.
- Build a glossary: machine learning versus deep learning versus generative AI, training versus inference, what a model parameter is, what a GPU does that a CPU does not, and why memory bandwidth matters more than clock speed for these workloads.
- Learn the NVIDIA software stack by name and purpose: CUDA, the container toolkit, NGC, Triton Inference Server, and the enterprise AI software layer. The blueprint objectives use verbs like describe, explain and compare, so focus on which piece solves which problem, not how to configure it.
By the end of the week you should be able to look at a described workload and say whether it is a training job or an inference job, and what that means for the hardware it needs.
Week 2: AI infrastructure (about 10 hours)
The biggest domain at 40%, and the one where your existing data center knowledge pays off.
- GPU systems: the differences between a workstation GPU, a data center GPU, and a multi-GPU node, plus how GPUs are connected inside a node and across nodes.
- Networking for AI: why east-west bandwidth and low latency matter for distributed training, and the roles of InfiniBand and high-speed Ethernet.
- Storage: throughput requirements for training data and why checkpointing behavior changes the storage design.
- Power, cooling and density: know that AI racks draw far more than conventional racks and what that means for facility planning.
- DPUs and cloud versus on-prem: what a DPU offloads and why that matters in an AI data center, plus the trade-offs of running GPU capacity on-prem versus in the cloud. Both are named objectives in this domain.
Draw a reference architecture for a small training cluster from memory: nodes, interconnect, storage, and management. If you can label every box and say why it is there, you are ready for this domain.
Week 3: AI operations, then practice (about 8.5 hours)
AI Operations is 22%. It covers data center management and monitoring, GPU monitoring, cluster orchestration and job scheduling, and virtualizing accelerated infrastructure. About 5.5 hours. If you have run any monitoring stack, focus on the GPU-specific metrics, on what a scheduler needs to know about a job, and on how GPUs get shared or partitioned in virtualized and Kubernetes environments. NVIDIA’s study guide suggests reading up on DCGM, Multi-Instance GPU (MIG), Slurm and Kubernetes for this domain.
Then spend 3 hours on practice with our free NCA-AIIO practice questions. Take a timed 50-question set in 60 minutes and score yourself by domain. NVIDIA does not give you a per-domain report after the real exam, so this is your only feedback loop.
Exam day
You register through Certiverse (NVIDIA says you will need a Certiverse account to access the exam), and the exam is delivered online with a remote proctor. Expect to install a secure browser, show a government-issued ID with your photo and signature that matches your registration name, and do a 360-degree scan of your room. No electronic devices, a clear desk, and no breaks: NVIDIA does not allow them on remotely proctored exams.
The exam is English only. NVIDIA does not publish the question formats for NCA-AIIO, so do not assume it is all single-answer multiple choice; read each question’s instructions. Sixty minutes for 50 questions is 72 seconds each. Flag anything that takes longer and come back.
If you fail, NVIDIA requires a 14-day wait and allows a maximum of 5 attempts in 12 months. A retake means buying the exam again at full price; our NCA-AIIO exam cost breakdown covers retakes, cancellations and discounts. The certification is valid for 2 years, and recertification is a retake.
Where infrastructure people slip
Not on the hardware. On the AI concepts. The 38% domain is written for a mixed audience, and it asks the kind of question a data scientist finds obvious and a network engineer has never needed to think about. Week 1 exists for that reason. Do not shorten it because week 2 looks like home turf.

Frequently asked questions
How hard is the NCA-AIIO exam?
NVIDIA calls it an entry-level credential, and its listed prerequisite is a basic understanding of data center infrastructure. Infrastructure people usually find the AI Infrastructure and AI Operations domains familiar; the Essential AI Knowledge domain (38%) is where they tend to need the most study.
How many questions are on NCA-AIIO, and how long do you get?
As of September 2026, NVIDIA lists 50 questions with a 60-minute limit, delivered online with a remote proctor in English. NVIDIA does not publish the question formats or a passing score; results are pass/fail.
Do I have to take NVIDIA's course before the NCA-AIIO exam?
No. NVIDIA lists the self-paced AI Infrastructure and Operations Fundamentals course as the certification learning path, with a typical completion time of seven hours, but no course is required to register.
What happens if I fail NCA-AIIO?
You wait 14 days, buy the exam again, and retake it. NVIDIA allows at most five attempts at the same exam in 12 months, counted from the day you bought the first one.
