“Analyst” covers two different jobs, and they need different AI certifications. A business analyst spends the week on requirements, processes, and stakeholders. A data analyst spends it in SQL, spreadsheets, and dashboards. A cert that’s perfect for one is often a waste of money for the other.
This guide splits the options into two paths. Every price and exam detail comes from the vendor’s own page as of September 2026. Where an option isn’t really an AI certification, we say so.
First, which analyst are you?
| If most of your week is… | Your path | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Workshops, requirements, process maps, business cases | Business analyst | AWS Certified AI Business Strategist |
| Excel, Word, Teams, and PowerPoint in a Microsoft 365 company | Business analyst | Microsoft AI Business Professional (AB-730) |
| Power BI reports and semantic models | Data analyst | Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300) |
| Trying to break into analytics | Data analyst | Google Data Analytics Certificate |
| Python notebooks, moving toward AI or ML work | Data analyst | Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-901) or NVIDIA NCA-GENL |
Plenty of people sit in the middle. If that’s you, pick the path that matches the job you want next, not the one you have now.
Path A: AI certifications for business analysts
Your value is judgment: which problem is worth solving, what “done” looks like, and whether an AI tool is the right answer at all. The best certs for you test exactly that.
AWS Certified AI Business Strategist
This is the rare AI exam that names business analysts in its target audience. It tests whether you can evaluate AI opportunities, build the business case, measure value with KPIs and ROI, set up governance, and lead change. AWS says it doesn’t test hands-on AWS skills.
The facts: $50 at beta pricing (standard price $100), 85 questions in 170 minutes during the beta, English or Japanese. AWS recommends about six months of working with or alongside AI initiatives. Details on the official exam page.
Pick it if you write business cases or sit between the business and a technical AI team. Skip it if your company has no AWS footprint and you need instant name recognition; it only launched in 2026.
Microsoft AI Business Professional (AB-730)
Most business-track AI exams test what you know. This one tests what you do: using Microsoft 365 Copilot and agents such as Researcher and Analyst to draft, analyze, and make decisions, without building apps or writing code. Microsoft expects you to be comfortable in Outlook, Word, Teams, PowerPoint, and Excel.
The facts: 45 minutes, $99 when taken in the US. Since its October 20, 2026 update, the study guide weights generative AI fundamentals at 25–30%, and managing prompts and chats, managing business content and collaboration, and driving business outcomes with agents at 20–25% each. See the certification page.
Pick it if your company has rolled out Copilot and you want proof you use it well. Skip it if you work in Google Workspace; the whole exam is Microsoft 365.
Google Cloud Generative AI Leader
A solid, vendor-branded option for BAs who advise on AI adoption: $99, 90 minutes, 50–60 questions, valid for three years, and open to any job role with or without technical experience. We cover it in more depth in our guide to the best AI certifications for project managers, since the fit is similar. Try the free Generative AI Leader practice questions first.
A non-AI option worth knowing: IIBA-CBDA
The International Institute of Business Analysis doesn’t offer an AI certification. Its closest credential is the Certification in Business Data Analytics (CBDA), which IIBA now pitches as a response to AI: organizations have more automated analysis than ever, and CBDA shows you can connect it to decisions the business can act on.
The facts: 75 scenario-based multiple-choice questions in 2 hours. IIBA lists it at “$405 or less,” including IIBA membership and the exam. The heaviest exam domains are identifying the research questions, interpreting and reporting results, and using results to influence decisions, at 20% each.
Pick it if your career is in business analysis and IIBA credentials carry weight where you work. Skip it if you specifically need “AI” on your résumé; it isn’t an AI exam.
Path B: AI certifications for data analysts
For data analysts, the question is less “do you understand AI strategy?” and more “can you get correct numbers faster with AI in the loop?” That points to certs tied to the tools you already use.
Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300): the one that now tests Copilot
PL-300 isn’t marketed as an AI cert, but the skills measured as of April 20, 2026 include creating a narrative visual with Copilot, using Copilot to create and suggest report pages, summarizing a semantic model with Copilot, and using AI visuals. For a Power BI shop, that’s the most job-relevant AI credential you can earn. See the PL-300 study guide.
The facts: 100 minutes, $165 when taken in the US, intermediate level. It expires every 12 months, and renewal is a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
Google Data Analytics Certificate: if you’re still getting into the field
This is a course-based certificate on Coursera, not a proctored exam. Google says it needs no experience or degree, teaches SQL, Python, and Tableau, and includes hands-on training in using AI for data cleaning, structuring, and visualization ideas. Coursera charges $49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day free trial, and Google estimates about 240 hours in total.
Pick it if you’re switching careers into analytics. Skip it if you already work as an analyst; it’s built to get you your first job.
Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-901): if you already write Python
Microsoft says candidates need knowledge of Python coding syntax, and 55–60% of the exam is implementing AI solutions in Microsoft Foundry. That’s a feature for analysts who live in notebooks and a trap for those who don’t. It costs $99 in the US and runs 45 minutes. Practice with our free Azure AI Fundamentals questions.
NVIDIA NCA-GENL: if you’re heading toward LLM work
NVIDIA describes its Generative AI LLMs associate candidate as someone who helps develop datasets, train models, and test them, and 14% of the exam is data analysis. Most of the rest leans technical: core machine learning (30%), software development (24%), and experimentation (22%), plus trustworthy AI (10%). It’s $125, one hour, 50–60 questions, online and remotely proctored, and valid for two years. Test yourself with our free NCA-GENL practice questions.
AWS Certified AI Practitioner: if your data lives on AWS
AWS names data roles among the example candidates. It’s $100 for 65 questions in 90 minutes, valid for three years, and a sensible first AI cert if your warehouse and pipelines run on AWS. Free AWS AI Practitioner practice questions are on our hub.

What actually gets analysts hired
For analysts, the certificate is the smaller half of the signal. The bigger half is a piece of work that shows AI made you faster without making you wrong.
Build one small portfolio piece alongside your cert: a dashboard where Copilot drafted the first version and you corrected it, or a requirements document where AI summarized the workshop notes and you caught what it missed. Write two sentences about what you checked and why. Our guide to making spreadsheets talk to you with AI is a good place to start, and the 3-minute AI fact-check workflow covers the checking habit hiring managers want to see.
A prompt to let job postings pick for you
Your target employers already told you which certs they value. They put it in their job postings. Paste five of them into this prompt.
You are a career analyst helping me choose an AI certification.
Context: I'm a [business analyst / data analyst] with [X] years of experience. My main tools are [TOOLS]. Below are 5 job postings for roles I want next.
Task:
1. Extract every certification, platform, and AI tool each posting mentions, and mark each one as required or nice-to-have.
2. Tally how often each appears across all 5 postings.
3. From this shortlist only, tell me which certification best matches these postings and why: [PASTE YOUR 2-3 CANDIDATE CERTS].
4. List any skill that shows up in 3 or more postings that none of my candidate certs covers.
Constraints: use only what's in the postings; don't guess at exam prices or details. If the postings don't mention certifications at all, say so plainly.
Output: a tally table, then a 3-sentence recommendation.
Postings:

[PASTE POSTING 2]
[PASTE POSTING 3]
[PASTE POSTING 4]
[PASTE POSTING 5]Mistakes analysts make with AI certs
- Taking the builder exam by accident. AI-901 and NCA-GENL expect technical depth. If you’ve never written Python, start on Path A or with PL-300.
- Ignoring the tool you use every day. A Power BI analyst with PL-300 often has a stronger AI story than one with a general AI cert, because PL-300 now tests Copilot inside the actual product.
- Letting a role-based cert lapse. PL-300 expires every 12 months. Renewal is free, but only if you do it before the expiry date.
- Trusting AI output you haven’t checked. That’s the one habit every analyst hiring manager tests for, cert or no cert.
Try it now: spend 20 minutes on your path
Pick your path from the table at the top. Run the job-postings prompt on five real listings, then do ten practice questions for your top choice on our free AI exam prep hub. Frequently asked questions
Is there an AI certification made for business analysts?
AWS Certified AI Business Strategist is the closest: AWS lists business analysts among its example roles, and it tests business cases, governance, and adoption rather than coding. IIBA, the business analysis body, doesn't offer an AI certification; its CBDA credential covers business data analytics.
Does the PL-300 Power BI exam cover AI?
Yes. Microsoft's skills measured as of April 20, 2026 include creating a narrative visual with Copilot, using Copilot to create report pages, summarizing a semantic model with Copilot, and using AI visuals. It isn't branded as an AI certification, but it tests AI inside the tool data analysts use.
Do data analysts need Python for an AI certification?
It depends on the cert. Microsoft says Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-901) requires knowledge of Python coding syntax, and NVIDIA's NCA-GENL is technical. PL-300 and the business-focused exams from AWS, Microsoft, and Google don't require coding.
How much does the Google Data Analytics Certificate cost?
Coursera charges $49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day free trial. Google estimates about 240 hours to finish, which is three to six months depending on how many hours a week you study.
