Card comparing NVIDIA NCA-GENL ($125, valid 2 years) with AWS AI Practitioner ($100, valid 3 years)

NVIDIA NCA-GENL vs AWS AI Practitioner: Which Should You Take?

Take NCA-GENL if you write code and want to prove you understand how large language models are built, tuned and evaluated. Take the AWS AI Practitioner if you do not write code, or you do but your day job is on AWS and you want the broader survey. NCA-GENL costs 125 USD and lasts 2 years. AIF-C01 costs 100 USD and lasts 3 years. Those are the numbers. The rest is about what each one measures.

These two get compared because they are both entry-level AI certs launched into the same hiring market. They are not the same kind of exam. One is written by the company that sells the GPUs and it reads like it. The other is written by the company that sells the cloud and it reads like that too.

The real differences

What is being tested. NCA-GENL’s domains are Core Machine Learning and AI Knowledge at 30%, Software Development at 24%, Experimentation at 22%, Data Analysis at 14%, and Trustworthy AI at 10%. That is 60% on development, experimentation and data work. AIF-C01’s domains are Fundamentals of AI and ML at 20%, Fundamentals of Generative AI at 24%, Applications of Foundation Models at 28%, Guidelines for Responsible AI at 14%, and Security, Compliance, and Governance for AI Solutions at 14%. That is 28% on governance and security, and 0% on software development as a named domain.

Vendor lock. AIF-C01 is an AWS exam and the foundation model questions assume AWS services. NCA-GENL is tied to NVIDIA’s ecosystem but the ML and LLM concepts are portable to any cloud, because the major clouds all offer NVIDIA GPUs.

Pace. NCA-GENL gives you 60 minutes for 50 to 60 questions, roughly 1 minute each. AIF-C01 gives you 90 minutes for 65, and 15 of them do not count. The NVIDIA exam is the one where you cannot afford to stall.

Feedback. AWS gives you a scaled score and a 700 target. NVIDIA gives you pass or fail. If you fail NCA-GENL you do not know by how much, and you have 5 attempts per 12 months to figure it out.

Shelf life. This one matters more than people think. NCA-GENL expires in 2 years and you retake the exam to renew. AIF-C01 lasts 3 years. Over 6 years that is 3 NVIDIA exams versus 2 AWS exams, at 125 USD and 100 USD respectively, though AWS lets certified holders use a 50% discount voucher to recertify.

Delivery. NCA-GENL is booked through Certiverse, delivered online with a remote proctor, and offered only in English. AIF-C01 runs through Pearson VUE in a center or online, in 10 languages since AWS retired the Italian and German versions after October 15, 2026.

Decision guide

  • Take NCA-GENL if you are a developer or data person and you want the cert that asks about training, tuning, evaluation and experiments.
  • Take AWS AI Practitioner if you are in a non-coding role: management, sales, project, security or compliance.
  • Take AWS AI Practitioner if your company is on AWS and you plan to continue to the Machine Learning Engineer Associate. It is a sensible first step, though AWS does not require it.
  • Take NCA-GENL if you are cloud-agnostic or on-prem. It does not care whose cloud you rent.
  • Take AWS AI Practitioner if you want a Pearson VUE test center or a language other than English.
  • Take NCA-GENL if the responsible AI and governance material bores you. It is 10% there versus 28% on AWS.

Should you just do both?

For a developer on AWS, yes, and in this order: NCA-GENL first, AIF-C01 second. The NVIDIA exam covers the harder conceptual ground, so the AWS survey feels quick afterward. Combined cost is 225 USD, and the two together say “understands the models and understands the platform,” which is a useful pair on a résumé.

For a non-developer, no. NCA-GENL’s 24% software development domain will cost you hours you do not need to spend. Take AIF-C01, and if you want a second cert, look at the one for your other cloud rather than NVIDIA’s.

Frequently asked questions

Is NCA-GENL harder than the AWS AI Practitioner?

It is the more technical of the two. NCA-GENL puts 24% on software development and 22% on experimentation, with about a minute per question. AIF-C01 is aimed at people who use but do not necessarily build AI on AWS, with 90 minutes for 65 questions.

Does NVIDIA give you a score on NCA-GENL?

No. NVIDIA certification exams are pass/fail and you do not receive a score. AWS reports AIF-C01 results as a scaled score from 100 to 1,000, with 700 needed to pass.

How long do the two certifications last?

NCA-GENL is valid for 2 years, and you renew it by passing the exam again. AIF-C01 is valid for 3 years, and AWS puts a 50% discount voucher in your account for exam-based recertification.

What happens if I fail?

Both make you wait 14 days and pay for the exam again. NVIDIA limits you to five attempts at the same exam in 12 months, counted from your first purchase; AWS has no attempt limit.
