AWS AI Practitioner vs Machine Learning Engineer: Which First?

If you have used SageMaker for a year, skip the AI Practitioner and take the Machine Learning Engineer Associate. If you have not, take the AI Practitioner first, and be honest with yourself about whether you will ever need the second one. AIF-C01 is 100 USD, 90 minutes and 700 to pass. MLA-C01 is 150 USD, 130 minutes and 720 to pass; in English it ended September 28, 2026, and since September 29, 2026 the MLA-C02 beta (75 USD, 170 minutes) has taken its place. Neither exam requires the other.

AWS calls one of these Foundational and the other Associate, and people read that as a ladder. It is more like two doors into the same building. One opens onto the lobby. The other opens onto the machine room, and you do not have to walk through the lobby to get there.

The date in that table is the important one. AWS delivered MLA-C01 in English through September 28, 2026. MLA-C02 beta registration opened September 1, 2026, with delivery from September 29, 2026. The beta is 75 USD, 85 questions, 170 minutes, English only, one attempt. AWS’s certification blog dates the standard MLA-C02 to January 14, 2027, though the exam page still lists GA as TBD. On that date MLA-C01 retires in every language. The MLA-C02 target candidate also adds Amazon Bedrock experience to the SageMaker year, and the C02 exam guide lists only multiple choice and multiple response questions.

The real differences

Breadth versus depth. AIF-C01 covers five domains: AI and ML fundamentals at 20%, generative AI fundamentals at 24%, applications of foundation models at 28%, responsible AI at 14%, and security, compliance and governance at 14%. MLA-C01 covers four: data preparation at 28%, model development at 26%, deployment and orchestration at 22%, and monitoring, maintenance and security at 24%. The first is a map. The second is a manual.

Who it assumes you are. AWS pitches AIF-C01 at someone with up to 6 months of exposure to AI and ML on AWS, and recommends AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials or AWS Technical Essentials first for people new to IT and the AWS Cloud. MLA-C01 assumes at least 1 year of SageMaker plus 1 year in a related role. Those are different people. The gap between them is not a study guide; it is a job.

Difficulty. MLA-C01 has a 720 pass mark to AIF-C01’s 700 and 40 more minutes. The extra time is not generosity. The questions are longer because the scenarios are real pipelines with real trade-offs.

Languages. AIF-C01 is now available in 10 languages; AWS retired the Italian and German versions after October 15, 2026. MLA-C01 is now available in 3, because the English version ended on September 28, 2026. Your English MLA path is the MLA-C02 beta while it runs or the standard MLA-C02 from January 14, 2027.

Value on a résumé. Put plainly: a Foundational cert gets a nod, an Associate cert gets a question. MLA is the one that starts a conversation about what you built.

Decision guide

  • Take the ML Engineer Associate first if you have a year of SageMaker or equivalent AWS ML work. Do not pay $100 to prove you know the lobby.
  • Take the AI Practitioner first if you are new to AWS, new to ML, or in a role that does not build models.
  • Take AI Practitioner first if your employer wants a quick win. It is 90 minutes and 700 to pass, and it counts.
  • Take ML Engineer Associate first if you want the MLA-C01 blueprint specifically: English delivery ended September 28, 2026, but Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese run until January 14, 2027.
  • Take AI Practitioner first if you are still deciding whether ML engineering is your direction. It is the cheaper way to find out.
  • Take the MLA-C02 beta if you have the experience, $75 is easier to justify than $150, and you can live with one attempt (fail it and you wait for the standard exam, scheduled for January 14, 2027). Our MLA-C02 exam guide covers what changed.

Should you just do both?

If you are early in your career and on AWS, yes, in order: AIF-C01 now, MLA in 6 to 12 months once you have real SageMaker time. MLA-C02 builds on the Practitioner’s generative AI material with foundation models, RAG and Amazon Bedrock, so the study is not wasted. Combined list price is 250 USD, and less if you catch the beta or use the 50% discount voucher AWS gives certified holders toward another exam.

If you already have the year of experience, do not do both. Take MLA and stop. The Practitioner adds nothing to the résumé of someone who holds the Associate, and the $100 buys a lot of SageMaker hours.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the AWS AI Practitioner before the Machine Learning Engineer Associate?

No. AWS certifications have no prerequisites, so you can book the ML Engineer Associate directly. AWS recommends at least 1 year of SageMaker experience plus 1 year in a related role for it, so the AI Practitioner makes more sense as a first step if you are newer to AWS AI.

How much do both AWS AI certifications cost together?

The AI Practitioner is 100 USD and MLA-C01 is 150 USD, so 250 USD at list price. Passing one gives you a 50% discount voucher toward another AWS exam, and the MLA-C02 beta (from September 29, 2026) is 75 USD with one attempt.

Which is harder, AIF-C01 or MLA?

The ML Engineer Associate. It needs 720 to pass versus 700, runs 130 minutes versus 90 (170 on the MLA-C02 beta), and assumes hands-on SageMaker work. AIF-C01 targets people with up to 6 months of exposure to AI and ML on AWS.

Can I still take MLA-C01 in English?

No. English delivery of MLA-C01 ended on September 28, 2026. English candidates now take the MLA-C02 beta while it runs or the standard MLA-C02, which AWS has scheduled for January 14, 2027. MLA-C01 stays available in Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese until then.
