The Databricks Certified Generative AI Engineer Associate costs $200 per attempt. There are no free retakes, the certification lasts two years, and renewing it means taking the full current exam again at the regular fee. Your prep can cost nothing, because the exam guide, Databricks Free Edition and Databricks’ on-demand Academy courses are free.
Here’s every cost Databricks lists, what failing or rescheduling really costs, and a few ways to keep the total at $200.

What your $200 buys
One attempt at a proctored exam: 45 scored multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, taken online or at a test center, in English, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese or Korean. Databricks may add unscored questions and gives extra time for them. No test aids are allowed. You see an unofficial result as soon as you finish, and a digital badge follows once Databricks reviews the proctor recording.
The fee doesn’t include training, practice exams or a free second try. Details are on the official exam page.
The real cost of failing: retakes
Databricks’ certification FAQ spells out the retake rules. You can retake as many times as you like, but you have to wait 14 days between attempts and each attempt costs the full price. So the math is simple:
| You pass on your… | Total exam fees |
|---|---|
| First attempt | $200 |
| Second attempt | $400 |
| Third attempt | $600 |
The terms also say that trying to get around the retake policy, for example by registering under a different name or email, leads to denied or revoked certification. Spending an extra week studying is the cheapest insurance you can buy.
Rescheduling and technical problems
Life happens, so know the windows before you book:
- Online proctored: the FAQ says to reschedule more than 24 hours before your exam time.
- Test center: reschedule more than 72 hours before.
- Later than that: Databricks charges a rescheduling fee. It doesn’t publish the amount.
The certification terms and conditions use a single 72-hour window for rescheduling or cancelling. To stay safe, make any change more than 72 hours ahead, however you’re testing.
Technical trouble can also cost you. The terms say a hardware malfunction or a weak internet connection can get your online exam suspended or cancelled, and any fees paid may be forfeited. Databricks also warns that a work computer may have firewalls that block the proctoring tools. Use a personal computer, run Kryterion’s system check a few days before, and test from a quiet room with a wired or strong connection.
Recertification every two years
The certification is valid for two years. Databricks notifies you before it expires, and to recertify you take the full exam that’s live at that point. There’s no shorter renewal exam and no renewal discount listed. At today’s price, keeping the credential for four years costs $400 if you pass first time both times.

Free and paid ways to prepare
You can prepare well for $0. The free options:
- The exam guide. It includes ten sample questions with answers, and Databricks says it lists all of the objectives that could be covered on an exam.
- Databricks Free Edition. A no-cost, quota-limited workspace with AI Search, model serving and Databricks Apps (with limits). Enough for most hands-on practice.
- Databricks Academy on-demand courses. The exam guide names four self-paced courses, and Databricks’ training page lists its role-based, on-demand learning pathways as free.
- Databricks’ AI Prep Guide. A free PDF, linked from the exam page, on using a chatbot as a study partner.
- Our free Databricks practice questions. 15 original questions weighted to the exam guide, with explanations.
The paid options are instructor-led training and lab access. Databricks’ training page lists the instructor-led “Generative AI Engineering with Databricks” course (18 hours) as paid and sells Databricks Academy Labs separately. They’re useful if your employer covers them, but you don’t need them to pass.
How to keep the total at $200
- Ask about a voucher. The exam checkout accepts voucher codes. If your company is a Databricks customer or partner, ask your manager or partner contact whether vouchers are available before you pay.
- Ask your employer to pay. A $200 exam tied to a platform your team already uses is an easy yes for many managers. The prompt below writes the request for you.
- Book only when you’re ready. A failed attempt doubles your cost. Use practice questions to find gaps, not to predict your score.
- Skip “dumps” and paid question banks of unknown origin. Databricks doesn’t offer practice exams and says third-party practice results are often misleading.
- Reschedule early. More than 72 hours’ notice keeps you clear of the rescheduling fee under both the FAQ and the terms.
Copy-paste prompt: ask your manager to cover the fee
You are helping me write a short, professional request to my manager.
Context: I want to take the Databricks Certified Generative AI Engineer Associate exam. It costs $200 per attempt, is valid for two years, and tests building, deploying and evaluating RAG apps and AI agents on Databricks. My team uses Databricks for [WHAT YOUR TEAM DOES, e.g. analytics pipelines / customer support data].
Task: Draft a 120-150 word message to my manager asking the company to pay the exam fee.
Include:
- One or two concrete ways the skills help our team: [PROJECT OR PROBLEM YOU'D APPLY IT TO]
- My study plan: [e.g. 6 weeks, 5 hours a week, using free Databricks training]
- My target exam date: [DATE]
- An offer to share what I learn with the team afterward
Tone: confident, brief, no hype. End with a clear yes/no question. How the price compares with similar AI certs
| Exam | Price | Validity |

| Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer | $200 plus tax where applicable | 2 years |
| AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer – Associate | $150 standard Associate price ($75 for the MLA-C02 beta, English only, until the standard MLA-C02 launches, which AWS’s blog dates to January 14, 2027 and its exam page still lists as TBD) | 3 years |
The Databricks exam isn’t cheap for an associate-level credential, but it’s the one that matches the platform if your company’s data already lives in Databricks. Is it worth $200?
It’s worth it if you build or plan to build generative AI apps on Databricks, because the prep itself teaches the platform’s RAG, serving and evaluation tools. It’s a weaker buy if you don’t touch Databricks at work. A certification rarely moves pay on its own; our honest look at whether AI certifications increase salary explains why the skills matter more than the badge.
Try it now
Before you pay anything, download the exam guide and try its ten sample questions. If most feel familiar, follow our Databricks study plan for a few weeks and book. If they don’t, start with Free Edition and the free Academy courses. Either way, send the manager prompt above today; the worst answer is no.
