How to Pass the Claude Associate Exam (CCAO-F): A 3-Week Study Plan
About 27 hours over three weeks, weighted to the seven domains in Anthropic’s exam guide. The Claude Certified Associate: Foundations exam is 60 questions in 120 minutes, priced at 99 USD, and you need 720 on a 100 to 1,000 scale to pass. The exam guide v1.0 took effect in July 2026.
One thing before the plan. You can only register if your organization is a member of the Claude Partner Network. Registration runs through Anthropic Partner Academy, needs a partner email address on a recognized company domain, and there is no public path for individuals. If your firm is not a partner yet, it can apply at claude.com/partners; Anthropic says membership is free. If you are not at a partner, this plan still works as a curriculum, but you cannot book the exam. The full lineup of Claude exams and who qualifies is on the Claude certification hub.
The Associate exam is the non-developer one. It tests whether you can get reliable work out of Claude as a user: writing the task, checking the output, choosing the right product, and knowing when not to trust the answer. Anthropic’s guide says no software-development or API experience is needed. That makes it approachable, and it also makes it easy to underprepare, because everyone who uses Claude daily assumes they already know this.
Before week one: two things
Download the exam guide PDF from the Partner Academy certification page. It has the full domain and task list, and Anthropic calls it the authoritative reference for candidates. For pricing, retakes, and renewal, use Anthropic’s certification FAQ.
Know the weights, because this plan follows them.
| Domain | Weight | Plan hours |
|---|---|---|
| Output Evaluation and Validation | 21% | 5 |
| Workflow Integration and Solution Design | 16% | 4 |
| Governance, Risk, and Responsible Use | 15% | 3.5 |
| Prompting and Task Execution | 14% | 3.5 |
| Product and Model Selection | 12% | 3 |
| Configuration and Knowledge Management | 12% | 3 |
| Troubleshooting and Optimization | 10% | 2.5 |
That is 24.5 hours of study plus about 2.5 hours of practice in week 3.
Week 1: evaluating output, then prompting (about 8.5 hours)
Start with the largest domain. Output Evaluation and Validation is 21%, and it is the one daily users skip because they think checking an answer is obvious.
- Practice catching what Claude gets wrong: a fabricated citation, a confident number with no source, a summary that drops a constraint from the original, a calculation done in prose. Build a checklist and run 20 real outputs through it.
- Learn to distinguish factual errors, reasoning errors, and format errors, because the fix for each is different.
- Then Prompting and Task Execution, 3.5 hours: task framing, giving context and examples, specifying format, and breaking a large task into steps.
Week 2: workflows, configuration and product choice (about 10 hours)
Three domains, 40% combined, and all three are about fitting Claude into an organization rather than a single chat.
- Workflow Integration and Solution Design, 4 hours: where a human review step belongs, what to automate and what to keep manual, and how to design a repeatable process around a model that is sometimes wrong.
- Configuration and Knowledge Management, 3 hours: Projects, instructions, uploaded knowledge, connectors such as Google Drive and Gmail, and how to keep a shared setup current across a team.
- Product and Model Selection, 3 hours: which Claude feature fits a described job (Projects, research mode, chat, artifacts), which model fits (Haiku, Sonnet or Opus) given cost, speed and quality, and when a long conversation should be restarted, summarized or carried into a Project.
Set up one real Claude Project this week with shared instructions and a knowledge source. Anthropic’s exam guide recommends exactly this kind of hands-on setup.
Week 3: governance, troubleshooting, and practice (about 8.5 hours)
Governance, Risk, and Responsible Use is 15%: data handling, what not to paste into a model, disclosure, and escalation. Troubleshooting and Optimization is 10%: why an output went wrong and the smallest change that fixes it. Together, about 6 hours.
Then 2.5 hours of practice. Take a timed 60-question set in 120 minutes and score by domain. Two minutes a question is generous, so the risk is overthinking, not running out of time.
Exam day
Delivered by Pearson VUE, online through OnVUE or at a test center. Online, check in 30 minutes early for the system test, a government photo ID that matches your registration name, and a 360-degree room scan. Single monitor, no headphones, cleared desk.
Formats are multiple choice and multiple response, and the exam is in English only.
If you fail, the waits are 14 days after the first attempt, 30 after the second, and 90 after the third, with a maximum of 4 attempts in a rolling 12 months. Each retake is the full 99 USD exam fee, less your partner discount: 50% off for Select and Preferred partners, and free for Global Premier partners through December 31, 2026 (50% off after that). Need to move your slot? Reschedule or cancel with Pearson VUE at least 48 hours ahead. The credential is valid for 12 months. Renew on time and the renewal assessment on Partner Academy is free and non-proctored; let it lapse and you have to pass the full exam again.
The mindset that passes
In Anthropic’s published sample questions, the tempting wrong answer often trusts the model too much. Pick the one where a person checks the thing that matters, and the 720 takes care of itself.

How much does the CCAO-F exam cost?
The list price is $99 USD as of September 2026. Registered-tier partners pay full price, while Select, Preferred and Global Premier partners get 50% off. Global Premier partners get 100% off through December 31, 2026, and the partner discount also applies to retakes.
