Prompt Engineering Certification in 2026: 10 Real Options, Honestly Compared

Beehiiv art card-prompt-engineering-certification

There is no single, industry-standard prompt engineering certification. The credentials that carry weight are proctored AI exams from AWS, Microsoft, Google and Anthropic that test prompting as one part of a broader exam, for $99 to $175, while the prompt engineering courses from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google end in a certificate of completion, not a certification.

That difference matters when you put it on a resume. A proctored exam checks your ID, times you and keeps you away from notes, so it shows you know the material. A course certificate shows you finished a course. Both are useful, for different jobs. Below are the 10 real options we verified on each issuer’s own site, what each one proves about your prompting, and which one to pick for your goal.

Certification or certificate? The difference in one table

Most “prompt engineering certifications” you’ll see advertised are course certificates. That’s not a knock on them; it just means they prove something different from a proctored exam.

The proctored exams that test prompting

None of these is a prompt engineering exam on its own. Each one makes prompting part of a broader foundational AI exam, which makes them easier for employers to recognize: the credential comes from a company whose tools they may already use.

AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01): $100

AWS’s exam guide has a task statement called “Choose effective prompt engineering techniques.” It covers the parts of a prompt (context, instruction, negative prompts), techniques such as zero-shot, single-shot, few-shot, chain-of-thought and prompt templates, best practices, risks such as poisoning, hijacking and jailbreaking, and prompt versioning with Amazon Bedrock Prompt Management. It sits in Domain 3, Applications of Foundation Models, which is 28% of the scored exam.

The exam is 90 minutes and 65 questions, taken at a Pearson VUE test center or online, and the certification is valid for 3 years. See the full AIF-C01 cost breakdown, the study guide and our free AWS AI Practitioner practice questions.

Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-901): $99

Microsoft’s skills outline (as of April 15, 2026) lists “Create effective system and user prompts for generative AI models” under Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry, a domain worth 55–60% of the exam. The rest covers AI concepts, responsible AI and building small apps in Foundry. Unlike the old AI-900, it expects basic Python.

Microsoft Fundamentals certifications don’t expire. Start with our AI-901 study guide, the 2-week study plan and our free Azure AI Fundamentals practice questions.

Google Cloud Generative AI Leader: $99

Google’s exam guide includes an objective to describe prompt engineering techniques and how they drive better results: zero-shot, one-shot, few-shot, role prompting and prompt chaining, plus chain-of-thought and ReAct as advanced techniques. It’s part of Section 3, Techniques to improve gen AI model output, about 20% of the exam.

Google says the exam is for anyone in any job role, with or without hands-on technical experience, and has no prerequisites. It’s 90 minutes, 50–60 multiple choice questions, online or at a test center, and valid for 3 years. Prepare with our Generative AI Leader study guide and free practice questions.

Claude certifications: $99 to $175, partners only

Anthropic’s four exams give prompting its own weighted domain, but you can only register if you work at a Claude Partner Network organization. Here’s the prompting share of each published blueprint:

  • Claude Certified Associate: Foundations (CCAO-F), $99: Prompting and Task Execution 14%, Output Evaluation and Validation 21%. Built for people who use Claude as a work tool, not developers.
  • Claude Certified Architect: Foundations (CCAR-F), $125: Prompt Engineering & Structured Output 20%.
  • Claude Certified Developer: Foundations (CCDV-F), $125: Prompt and Context Engineering 11.0%.
  • Claude Certified Architect: Professional (CCAR-P), $175: Claude Models, Prompting & Context Engineering 13%.

Each is a 120-minute proctored exam through Pearson VUE and stays valid for 12 months. Our Claude certification guide covers all four, who can take them and what they cost with partner discounts. Practice with our free CCAO-F, CCAR-F and CCDV-F questions, or compare the two architect exams in CCAR-F vs CCAR-P.

Free and low-cost prompt engineering courses

If you searched for a prompt engineering course, these are the ones from the companies that build the models and the AI tools you use. The OpenAI and Anthropic courses cost nothing.

OpenAI Academy: AI Foundations (free)

OpenAI’s AI Foundations course covers how large language models work, prompting and evaluation, adding context and responsible use, practiced on a real task from your own work. You need a ChatGPT account; OpenAI says its courses are free and available worldwide, with no workspace membership required.

To earn the badge, complete the course and score at least 80% on its assessment, which draws 10–20 questions from a bank of 50. If you miss, you retry with a new set of questions. Badges are issued through Accredible and can be shared on LinkedIn. Finish all three Foundations courses (AI Foundations, Applied AI Foundations, and Agents and Workflows) and you also get a pathway certificate of completion. OpenAI’s help center is blunt about what these are: badges and certificates of completion are not certifications.

Claude Academy: Claude 101 and Building with the Claude API (free)

Anthropic’s Claude Academy is free with a free Claude account; you don’t need a paid plan or a work account. For prompting, start with Claude 101 (13 lessons, 1 quiz, about 2.5 hours), which runs from your first conversation and effective prompting to projects, artifacts, skills and connected tools. AI Fluency: Framework and foundations (14 lessons, 1 quiz, about 4 hours) teaches Anthropic’s 4D framework: Delegation, Description, Discernment and Diligence. Developers can take Building with the Claude API (67 lessons, 8 quizzes, about 9 hours), which covers prompting, tool use, RAG, agents and MCP.

You earn a course completion badge by passing the quizzes, with unlimited retakes. Badges don’t expire, and each has a public verification link and a LinkedIn button. Anthropic is clear that these free certificates are separate from its paid, proctored Claude certification exams. Our guide on how to use Claude is a good companion.

Google AI Essentials and the AI Professional Certificate ($49 a month)

If you’re looking for Google Prompting Essentials, Google’s page for it now redirects to the Google AI Professional Certificate: 8 courses of about an hour each, starting with AI Fundamentals, where you practice building prompts with a structured framework. It costs $49 a month in the US and Canada on Coursera, Google Skills and Udemy, and comes with 3 months of Google AI Pro (Google’s terms apply; the offer must be redeemed by January 1, 2027).

Google AI Essentials is the shorter option: under 5 hours across 5 modules, including Discover the Art of Prompting, for $49 a month in the US and Canada after a 7-day free trial. Both end with a certificate from Google. Neither is a proctored exam.

University courses

Universities also publish prompt engineering courses on platforms like Coursera. Vanderbilt University, for example, released Prompt Engineering for ChatGPT on Coursera in May 2023. These end in a course certificate; check the course listing for current price and length, since the university’s own announcement doesn’t state them.

What about paid “certified prompt engineer” programs?

You’ll find independent programs that sell a “certified prompt engineer” title. Some are good courses. Before you pay, check three things:

  1. Who issues it. Is it a company whose AI tools your employer uses, or a training company your employer has never heard of?
  2. How it’s tested. A proctored exam with ID checks means more than an unproctored quiz.
  3. Whether employers ask for it. Search the job postings you want. If no one names the credential, treat it as a course, not a qualification.

OpenAI said in September 2025 that its planned certifications would cover levels of AI fluency up to prompt engineering. As of today, those certifications are an invite-only pilot for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces, so there is no OpenAI prompt engineering exam you can book.

Which one should you get?

How to prepare for the prompting questions on these exams

Read the vendor’s published exam guide first; the objectives quoted above come straight from them. Then practice the techniques on real tasks: write a zero-shot prompt, add two examples to make it few-shot, ask for step-by-step reasoning, and compare the results. Our practice questions are original, written from each vendor’s published exam guide, and they explain every answer. They are not real exam questions, and any site selling “actual exam questions” is selling dumps that can cost you the credential.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official prompt engineering certification?

No. There's no single industry-standard prompt engineering certification. AWS, Microsoft, Google and Anthropic test prompting inside broader proctored AI exams, and OpenAI, Anthropic and Google teach it in courses that end in a certificate of completion.

What is the best prompt engineering certification?

For proof an employer will recognize, a proctored exam that includes prompting: the AWS Certified AI Practitioner ($100), Microsoft's AI-901 ($99) or Google Cloud's Generative AI Leader ($99). To learn the skill, OpenAI's AI Foundations and Anthropic's Claude 101 courses are free.

Is there a free prompt engineering certification?

There are free course credentials, not free proctored certifications. OpenAI Academy's AI Foundations badge and Claude Academy's Claude 101 certificate of completion both cost nothing, but OpenAI says its badges are not certifications.

How much does a prompt engineering certification cost?

Free for OpenAI Academy and Claude Academy course badges, $49 a month for Google AI Essentials or the Google AI Professional Certificate, and $99 to $100 per attempt for the AWS, Microsoft and Google proctored exams. The Claude exams cost $99 to $175 and are open only to Claude partners.

Does Google offer a prompt engineering certificate?

Google's Prompting Essentials page now redirects to the Google AI Professional Certificate, 8 courses of about an hour each for $49 a month in the US and Canada. Google AI Essentials, under 5 hours, also includes a module on prompting. Both are course certificates, not proctored exams.

Does OpenAI offer a prompt engineering certification?

Not one you can book. OpenAI said its planned certifications would reach up to prompt engineering, but today they are an invite-only pilot for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces. Anyone can take OpenAI Academy's free AI Foundations course and earn a badge.

Is a prompt engineering certificate worth it?

A free course certificate is worth it for the learning, and it shows initiative on LinkedIn. If you need a credential employers can verify, a $99 or $100 proctored exam from a vendor your company uses usually carries more weight than a paid certificate from an issuer employers don't know.

How long does it take to get a prompt engineering certificate?

OpenAI's AI Foundations takes 60–75 minutes, Claude 101 about 2.5 hours and Google AI Essentials under 5 hours. A proctored exam takes 45 to 120 minutes on the day, plus your study time; our AI-901 and AWS AI Practitioner study plans run 2 and 3 weeks.

Can anyone take the Claude certification to prove prompting skills?

No. Anthropic's Claude certifications are open only to employees of Claude Partner Network organizations. Anyone can take the free Claude Academy courses, which award certificates of completion.
