Card: Pass Google's Generative AI Leader exam in 2 weeks

How to Pass the Google Cloud Generative AI Leader Exam: A 2-Week Plan

About 18 hours over two weeks, weighted to the four domains in Google’s exam guide. As of September 2026, Google lists the Generative AI Leader exam at 99 USD plus tax where applicable, 50 to 60 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, with no prerequisites. Google does not publish a passing score for it.

This is the least technical exam in the Google Cloud lineup. The target reader is someone who has to make decisions about generative AI in a business, not someone who ships it. Two weeks is enough for anyone who already reads about this stuff, and the plan below assumes about 9 hours a week.

Before week one: two things

Read the exam guide PDF, and download a fresh copy: Google says it is updating its exams for product changes announced at Google Cloud Next ’26, including Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, and the guide is where those changes show up. Google’s own three-step prep sequence is the exam guide, then the Generative AI Leader learning path and study guide, then the official sample questions. All three are linked from the same page.

Know the weights, because this plan follows them. Google publishes them as approximate.

DomainWeightPlan hours
Fundamentals of gen AI~30%5
Google Cloud’s gen AI offerings~35%5.5
Techniques to improve gen AI model output~20%3
Business strategies for a successful gen AI solution~15%2.5

That is 16 hours of study plus 2 hours on the sample questions and a timed set.

Week 1: fundamentals and the Google Cloud catalog (about 10.5 hours)

Two domains, 65% of the exam. Start with the fundamentals because the product questions assume them.

  • Fundamentals, about 5 hours: core terms (foundation, multimodal and diffusion models, LLMs, prompt tuning), supervised versus unsupervised versus reinforcement learning, the machine learning lifecycle, data quality and structured versus unstructured data, the five layers the guide names (infrastructure, models, platforms, agents, applications), and what Google’s own models are for: Gemini, Gemma, Imagen and Veo. Follow the learning path for this section; it is built for exactly this level.
  • Google Cloud offerings, about 5.5 hours: the Gemini app, Gemini Enterprise, Gemini for Google Workspace, the Customer Engagement Suite, and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (formerly Vertex AI) with Model Garden, Agent Studio and Agent Search, plus the Google Cloud APIs agents use as tools. The exam asks which offering fits a described need, so build a table with the offering, who uses it, and the problem it solves.

By the end of the week you should be able to hear a business ask, such as summarize our support tickets or draft customer emails in our tone, and name the Google product a sales engineer would reach for.

Week 2: improving output, business strategy, and practice (about 7.5 hours)

Domain 3 is 20% and it is the most technical part of the exam, though still concept level.

  • Prompting: zero-shot, one-shot and few-shot, role prompting, prompt chaining, chain-of-thought and ReAct, plus what temperature, top-p and output-length settings do. About 1.5 hours.
  • Grounding and RAG: why connecting a model to your own data reduces hallucination, and where Google’s grounding options fit. About 1 hour.
  • Fine-tuning versus prompting versus grounding: know the cost and effort order and when each is the right call. About 30 minutes.

Domain 4 is 15% and reads like a management brief: identifying use cases, measuring value, the steps to bring gen AI into an organization, secure AI (Google’s Secure AI Framework, IAM, Security Command Center), and responsible AI: privacy, bias and fairness, accountability and explainability. About 2.5 hours.

Finish with the official sample questions, then a timed set of 60 questions in 90 minutes. That is 90 seconds a question, which is comfortable. Score yourself by domain and go back to the weakest one for the last hour.

Exam day

Delivered by Pearson VUE, online-proctored or onsite at a test center. Google asks you to run the OnVUE system test at least 24 hours ahead; at check-in you show a government photo ID matching your registration and do a room scan. Disconnect external monitors, clear the desk, and plan to stay in camera view for the whole exam, because breaks are not allowed online.

Available languages are English, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese. Format is multiple choice.

If you fail, Google’s foundational-level policy applies: at least 14 days between failed attempts, a maximum of 10 attempts per year, and payment on every registration. The certification is valid for 3 years, and you can start renewing 180 days before it lapses. Our Generative AI Leader exam cost guide has the full retake and renewal numbers.

The mistake technical people make on this exam

Over-answering. If you build with LLMs, you will read a question about improving output and think about eval harnesses and model routing. The exam wants the leader-level answer: ground the model in your data, tighten the prompt, or pick a different model in the catalog. Answer at the altitude of the exam title, and two weeks is plenty.
