How to Pass NVIDIA NCA-GENL: A 3-Week Study Plan
About 29 hours over three weeks, weighted to the five domains on NVIDIA’s published blueprint. As of September 2026, NVIDIA lists NCA-GENL at 125 USD, 50 to 60 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, delivered online with remote proctoring. There is no published passing score. NVIDIA reports the result as pass or fail and does not give you a number.
That last fact shapes the plan. You cannot aim for 70% and coast, because you will never see the percentage. So the plan is built to get every domain solid, with the hours following the weights.
The exam is associate level with no required course or prior certification. NVIDIA lists a basic understanding of generative AI and LLMs as the prerequisite, and the 60-minute limit means roughly one minute per question. It rewards people who know the material cold, not people who can reason their way to an answer given time.

Before week one: two things
Open the NCA-GENL certification page and read the exam preparation section. For each domain, NVIDIA lists the exam topics, the weight, recommended training and suggested readings.
Know the weights, because this plan follows them.
| Domain | Weight | Plan hours |
|---|---|---|
| Core Machine Learning and AI Knowledge | 30% | 7.5 |
| Software Development | 24% | 6 |
| Experimentation | 22% | 5.5 |
| Data Analysis | 14% | 3.5 |
| Trustworthy AI | 10% | 2.5 |
That is 25 hours of study plus about 4 hours of practice and review in week 3.
Week 1: core ML and trustworthy AI (about 10 hours)
Start with the 30% domain. It is the theory everything else hangs on.
- Transformer architecture at whiteboard depth: attention, positional encoding, encoder versus decoder, what a token and an embedding are, and why context length costs what it does.
- Training concepts: pretraining versus fine-tuning, loss, overfitting, learning rate, and parameter-efficient methods like LoRA, which NVIDIA lists as suggested reading.
- Inference concepts: sampling, temperature, top-k and top-p, and quantization.
Spend the last 2.5 hours on Trustworthy AI. It is only 10%, but it is short, definitional, and mostly free points: ethical principles, minimizing bias, data privacy versus consent, and how NVIDIA and other technologies improve trustworthiness (NeMo Guardrails, NVIDIA’s open-source toolkit for adding guardrails to LLM apps, is a good example to know). Do it now so it is not the thing you cram on the last night.
Week 2: software development and experimentation (about 11.5 hours)
Two domains, 46% combined, and both assume you have built something.
- Work through Rapid Application Development With Large Language Models (LLMs), the course NVIDIA recommends for every NCA-GENL domain. Then build a small chain yourself: a prompt template, a retrieval step, and a call to a model API.
- Know the serving side at the level NVIDIA’s suggested readings cover it: what Triton Inference Server is for, and where TensorRT fits when you need faster inference.
- For Experimentation, practice the discipline rather than the tools: define a metric, hold out an eval set, change one variable, compare. Know the common LLM evaluation metrics and what each measures.
If you only have time for one hands-on task this week, make it the retrieval chain. NVIDIA’s exam topics name RAG more often than any other application pattern.
Week 3: data analysis, then practice (about 7.5 hours)
Data Analysis is 14% and it is the most conventional domain on the exam: cleaning and transforming data, comparing models with statistical metrics, and creating charts to convey results. About 3.5 hours is enough for most people with a data background.
Then practice with our free NCA-GENL practice questions. Take a timed set of 60 questions in 60 minutes. Track every miss by domain. Because NVIDIA gives you no score report, your own practice breakdown is the only per-domain feedback you will ever get, so keep it honest.
Exam day
Registration runs through Certiverse, and the exam is delivered online with a remote proctor. Expect to install a secure browser, show a government-issued ID with your photo and signature that matches your registration name, and do a 360-degree scan of your room before the timer starts. No electronic devices, a clear desk, and no breaks: NVIDIA does not allow them on remotely proctored exams.
The exam is English only, multiple choice. Sixty minutes for up to 60 questions means you should not spend more than 90 seconds on anything. Flag it and move on.
If you fail, NVIDIA requires a 14-day wait and allows a maximum of 5 attempts in 12 months. A retake means buying the exam again at full price; our NCA-GENL exam cost breakdown covers retakes, cancellations and discounts. The certification is valid for 2 years, and you recertify by retaking the exam.
What passes this exam
Recall speed. With a minute per question and no partial feedback, the candidates who pass are the ones who can name the component, the metric, or the failure mode without working it out. Three weeks of writing your own definitions and building one real chain gets you there. Cramming the blueprint the night before does not.

Frequently asked questions
How long should I study for NCA-GENL?
This plan uses about 29 hours over three weeks: 25 hours split by NVIDIA's domain weights plus about 4 hours of timed practice. If you already build with LLMs you may need less; if Python and machine-learning basics are new to you, budget more.
What is the passing score for NCA-GENL?
NVIDIA does not publish one. Its certification exams are pass/fail and you will not receive a score, so aim to be solid in every domain rather than chasing a target percentage.
Can I retake NCA-GENL if I fail?
Yes. NVIDIA requires a 14-day wait, you buy the exam again, and you can take the same exam at most five times in 12 months, counted from the day you bought your first attempt.
Is the NCA-GENL exam online?
Yes. It is delivered online with a remote proctor, and registration runs through Certiverse. As of September 2026 it is 50 to 60 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, in English, and breaks are not allowed on remotely proctored NVIDIA exams.
