MCP Certification in 2026: The Official Exam, the Claude Exams That Test MCP, and Free Courses

Beehiiv art card-mcp-certification

Yes: as of October 2026 there is an official MCP certification. The Model Context Protocol Associate (MCPA) launched on September 14, 2026 from Linux Foundation Education and the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), the foundation that now hosts the MCP project, and it’s a $250, 90-minute, online proctored multiple-choice exam. Everything else with MCP in it is either a broader proctored exam that tests MCP as one part of the outline, like Anthropic’s Claude Certified Architect: Foundations (CCAR-F), or a course that ends in a certificate of completion.

Below: the MCPA at a glance, 15 MCP exams and courses compared on price, length and what they prove, which Claude certifications test MCP (and who’s allowed to take them), the free courses worth doing first, and which credential fits your stack. Every fact comes from the issuer’s own pages. Searching for MCP as in Microsoft Certified Professional? Our Microsoft AI certifications guide covers Microsoft’s current AI exams.

For hiring managers, a proctored exam usually carries more weight than a certificate of completion; for learning MCP, the free courses are the better first step.

What the MCPA exam covers

The Linux Foundation publishes five weighted domains for the MCPA. This is the published outline, not exam content:

DomainWeightPublished topics
MCP Fundamentals16%Purpose and scope, core concepts, interoperability and value
Architecture & Components14%Schemas and structured data; hosts, clients and servers; model interaction flow
Interactions & Execution26%Interaction patterns and response handling, error handling, the tool invocation lifecycle, protocol primitives
Security & Governance24%Trust boundaries, permissions and consent, risk and safety controls, auditability and observability
Use Cases & Ecosystem20%Roles and adoption, operational use cases, ecosystem and portability

Half the exam (Interactions & Execution plus Security & Governance) is about how the protocol behaves at runtime and how to keep it safe. The Linux Foundation describes the exam as focused on MCP internals: architecture, message flow, client-server interactions, capabilities, tools, resources, prompts, transports and security. It tells candidates to prepare against MCP release 2026-07-28, and it positions the MCPA for AI engineering, platform engineering and AI governance roles.

You don’t write code during the exam (it’s multiple choice), but the recommended experience assumes you’ve worked with message-based protocols and LLM APIs. If you’ve never built an MCP server, do that before you book.

How to prepare for the MCPA

  1. Read the docs and the spec. Start with What is MCP? and the architecture, server and client pages on modelcontextprotocol.io, then work through the 2026-07-28 specification, since that’s the version the exam follows.
  2. Take Anthropic’s two free MCP courses. Introduction to Model Context Protocol (about 1 hour) has you build a server and client with the Python SDK and test them with the MCP Inspector. Model Context Protocol: Advanced Topics (about 1.5 hours) covers sampling, notifications, roots, and the stdio and StreamableHTTP transports.
  3. Build something small. One server that exposes a tool, a resource and a prompt, connected to a client you actually use. The hands-on reps make the interaction and error-handling questions far easier to reason about.
  4. Spend real time on security. Security & Governance is 24% of the exam. The MCP docs include authorization (OAuth 2.1) and security best-practice tutorials; read both.
  5. Paid training, if your employer is paying. The Linux Foundation and RX-M launched two instructor-led courses on October 5, 2026: Model Context Protocol Foundation (RXM404), $1,995 for 2 days, and MCP Apps Development (RXM405), $995 for 1 day. Both end in a certificate of completion, not the MCPA.

Two ways to pay less: the $495 bundle adds a year of the Linux Foundation’s THRIVE-ONE subscription (which it says includes more than 100 courses and SkillCreds), and the MCPA page advertises 20% off when you buy through an AAIF conference registration. The MCPA page doesn’t list an official practice test, and we don’t have an MCPA question bank yet. Skip anyone selling “real MCPA questions”: the exam is covered by the Linux Foundation’s certification and confidentiality agreement, and you’d be studying someone’s guesses.

Which Claude certifications test MCP?

Anthropic doesn’t offer an MCP-only certification. Its four Claude certifications are proctored by Pearson VUE, cost $99 to $175, and are open only to people at Claude Partner Network organizations, who register with a work email on a recognized partner domain. Here’s how much MCP each published exam guide contains:

ExamPriceMCP in the published exam guide
Claude Certified Architect: Foundations (CCAR-F)$125Domain 2, Tool Design & MCP Integration (18%): MCP tool and resource design, structured error responses from MCP tools, and configuring MCP servers in Claude Code at project or user scope. It’s also a primary domain in three of the six published exam scenarios. Deploying or hosting MCP servers is listed as out of scope.
Claude Certified Developer: Foundations (CCDV-F)$125Domain 8, Tools and MCPs (10.6%), including MCP Server Development (2.1%: authoring, deployment, resources, tools, prompts and transports such as stdio) and choosing between built-in tools, custom tools, Skills and MCP (4.1%).
Claude Certified Architect: Professional (CCAR-P)$175Domain 3, Integration (19%), includes choosing the right integration mechanism: MCP, API/CLI or agent-to-agent.
Claude Certified Associate: Foundations (CCAO-F)$99No MCP objective. It covers managing connectors such as Google Drive and Gmail inside Claude, and the guide says it isn’t meant for people who design agentic systems.

If MCP depth is what you want on paper, CCAR-F has the most: its guide says the typical candidate has six months of hands-on work with the Claude API, Agent SDK, Claude Code and MCP, and Anthropic’s free CCAR-F prep list includes an Introduction to MCP course. Our CCAR-F study guide and CCDV-F study guide break down every domain, and the CCAR-P study guide covers the professional exam. For eligibility, prices and discounts, start with our Claude certification hub and who can take Claude certification.

Not at a partner company? You can still take Anthropic’s MCP courses for free; you just can’t sit the proctored Claude exams yet. That’s where the vendor-neutral MCPA fills a real gap.

Other proctored exams with MCP in the outline

AWS

MCP appears in two AWS exam guides. AWS Certified AI Practitioner exam guide v1.1 (published April 30, 2026) includes an objective on foundational agentic AI concepts, including MCP and its role in connecting agents to external systems; AWS says guide changes reach the live exam about a month after publication. The Generative AI Developer Professional (AIP-C01) guide goes further: Task 2.1 covers MCP for agent-tool interactions and building MCP servers on AWS Lambda (stateless, lightweight tools) or Amazon ECS (complex tools). See our AWS AI Practitioner study guide, AIP-C01 study guide and AIP-C01 cost breakdown.

Microsoft and GitHub

  • AB-620, AI Agent Builder Associate: the study guide lists “Configure MCP tools” and expects familiarity with MCP and the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol.
  • GH-600, GitHub Agentic AI Developer: a whole skill group, Configure MCP servers: adding an MCP server as an agent tool, the GitHub remote MCP server, MCP registries and allow lists.
  • AI-500, Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert: the study guide includes designing and building MCP servers and clients, including on Azure Functions. You need the AI-103 certification to earn it; our AI-103 study guide covers that step.
  • AB-100, Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect: the study guide includes designing agent extensibility with MCP in Copilot Studio. Our AB-100 study guide has the full outline.

Google Cloud and Databricks

Google’s Professional Agentic Architect exam guide names MCP in three of its five sections: configuring coding agents with MCP servers, connecting custom agents through Google Cloud MCP Servers and orchestrating agents with MCP and A2A, and securing agentic protocols. General registration opens November 2, 2026; the certification costs $200, needs both a proctored exam and hands-on labs, and is valid for one year. Databricks Certified Context Engineer Associate ($200, 90 minutes, valid two years) gives 13% to Tool Design, MCP, and Agent Context.

Free MCP courses with a certificate of completion

A certificate of completion says you finished a course. Nobody proctors it, so it won’t carry the weight of an exam, but it’s the cheapest way to learn MCP before you pay for one.

  • Anthropic Claude Academy: Introduction to Model Context Protocol (10 lessons, about 1 hour) and Model Context Protocol: Advanced Topics (11 lessons, about 1.5 hours) each end in a quiz and a completion badge. Building with the Claude API (67 lessons, about 9 hours) covers MCP alongside tool use, RAG and agents. Claude Academy is free with a free Claude account, and its badges don’t expire.
  • Hugging Face MCP Course: free and built in partnership with Anthropic. It issues two free certificates: one for the fundamentals unit and a certificate of completion for the two use-case units, at about 3 to 4 hours of work a week per unit. The course page mentions a deadline, so check the current schedule before you start.
  • DeepLearning.AI, MCP: Build Rich-Context AI Apps with Anthropic: free to enroll, about 2 hours across 11 video lessons. The graded assignment and the accomplishment certificate need a paid Pro membership.
  • AWS microcredentials: free, timed, hands-on labs in a live AWS environment with a Credly badge when you pass. AWS Databases for Agentic AI Demonstrated, launched September 29, 2026, includes configuring MCP servers to debug an agent’s database interactions.

More free options, including certificates for prompting and AI fundamentals, are in our free AI certifications guide.

Search for MCP certification and you’ll also find paid “certified MCP developer” or “MCP expert” programs sold by training sites and certificate marketplaces. Some are decent courses. Before you pay, check three things: who issues it (the Linux Foundation, home of the MCP project through the AAIF, lists one MCP certification, the MCPA), whether the exam is proctored, and whether employers you want to work for mention it in job listings. If a program fails those checks, a free Anthropic course plus a public repo with an MCP server you built will usually show more.

Which MCP credential should you get?

  • You want proof you know the protocol, whatever the vendor: the MCPA ($250). It’s the only certification about MCP itself.
  • You build on Claude at a partner company: CCDV-F if you write the code, CCAR-F if you design the systems (it has the most MCP), then CCAR-P later. Compare the two architect exams in CCAR-F vs CCAR-P.
  • You build on AWS: AIP-C01 for builders; AIF-C01 first if you need the foundations.
  • You build on Microsoft: AB-620 for Copilot Studio builders, AI-103 then AI-500 for Azure developers, AB-100 for business solution architects.
  • You run coding agents in GitHub: GH-600.
  • You’re on Google Cloud: the Professional Agentic Architect once it reaches general availability in mid-November 2026.
  • You’re still learning: Anthropic’s two free courses first, then pick an exam once you know which platform you’ll work on. Our which AI certification guide helps with that choice.
