Do AI Certifications Expire? Renewal Rules for 15 AI Certs

Yes, most AI certifications expire. Of the 15 popular AI certifications below, only one never expires: Microsoft’s Azure AI Fundamentals. The rest last anywhere from 12 months (Anthropic’s Claude Architect certification) to 3 years (AWS, CompTIA, and others), and renewing ranges from free to paying the full exam fee again.

This guide gives you the renewal rules for all 15 in one table, shows which renewals are free, explains what happens if you let one lapse, and ends with a copy-paste prompt that builds your own renewal calendar.

The short answer, by validity period

• Never expires: Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-901). Microsoft fundamentals certifications don’t expire.
• 12 months to 1 year: Microsoft associate certifications like AI-103 and AI-300, and Anthropic’s Claude Certified Architect – Foundations.
• 2 years: Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer, NVIDIA’s NCA-GENL and NCA-AIIO, and Databricks Generative AI Engineer Associate.
• 3 years: AWS AI Practitioner and Machine Learning Engineer, Google Cloud Generative AI Leader, CertNexus CAIP, VMware VCP-VCF Administrator, PMI-CPMAI, and CompTIA SecAI+.

Renewal rules for 15 AI certifications

Every row comes from the vendor’s own certification, policy, or exam guide pages, checked in September 2026. Prices are list prices in US dollars. Rules change, so confirm on the official page before you plan around a date.

Two notes on the AWS rows. “Latest version” matters: AWS is replacing the Machine Learning Engineer exam with MLA-C02, so a future renewal means passing the new version (our MLA-C02 exam guide covers the change). And passing the ML Engineer exam also renews your AI Practitioner, so one exam can reset two clocks. Full details are on AWS’s recertification page.

Which AI certification renewals are free?

Four of the 15 cost nothing to keep current, as long as you act on time:

• Microsoft associate certifications (AI-103, AI-300). Microsoft’s renewal program is free. The assessment is online, unproctored, open book, and shorter than the original exam. You can retake it as often as you need before the expiry date.
• Claude Certified Architect – Foundations. Anthropic’s exam guide says there’s no fee for on-time renewal. You review what changed and pass a free, non-proctored assessment. Our Claude certification renewal guide walks through the timing.
• Azure AI Fundamentals. Free because there’s nothing to renew.

Among the paid options, AWS and Google cut the exam fee in half with a renewal discount, and CompTIA SecAI+ charges a $75 continuing education fee for the whole three-year cycle once you’ve earned 15 CEUs. NVIDIA, Databricks, and VMware renewals mean paying for the exam again.

What happens if you let one lapse

This is where the rules differ most, and where people lose money.

• Microsoft: once a certification expires, you can’t renew it. You have to re-earn it by passing the exam again.
• Anthropic: if your Claude certification lapses, you retake the full exam at the full fee to get certified again.
• Google Cloud: you get a short grace period. Within 30 days of your inactive date you can still renew and keep your certificate number. After that, you take the standard exam at full list price.
• AWS: every renewal and maintenance option requires an active certification, so don’t let it run out.
• CompTIA: there’s a 30-day grace period to pay CE fees or submit CEUs you earned during the cycle. After that, you need to pass the latest exam.
• PMI: miss your PDU deadline and you’re suspended for 12 months, during which you can’t use the credential. Miss that too and it expires, which means reapplying, paying again, and retaking the exam.
• NVIDIA, Databricks, and VMware: renewal already means passing the exam again, so a lapse mostly leaves a gap until you pass.
• CertNexus: both renewal paths, credits or the current exam, have to be finished before your certification expires.

How to never miss a renewal

Set two calendar reminders per certification

Set one for the day the renewal window opens and one for 30 days before expiry. Windows vary a lot:

• Microsoft: opens 6 months before expiry. You can’t renew earlier.
• Google Cloud: 180 days before for foundational certifications like Generative AI Leader, 60 days for professional ones. Google says attempting the same exam outside this window can get your result rejected.
• AWS Skill Builder maintenance: only within 90 days of expiry, with an active paid subscription.
• Continuing education programs (CompTIA, CertNexus, PMI): credits must be earned inside your current cycle, so start early instead of cramming in the final month.

AWS puts a 50% voucher in your AWS Certification Account when you pass. Google gives you a 50% renewal code when you first certify, stored in your CM Connect profile. Check that both exist before you need them. Google’s renewal options page explains the codes and windows.

Stack renewals where you can

Some exams renew other certifications. At AWS, passing the Machine Learning Engineer or Generative AI Developer exam renews AI Practitioner. At CompTIA, renewing a higher-level certification can renew lower ones too, and you only pay CE fees for your highest one (CompTIA’s CE fee page has the details).

Keep your contact details current

Renewal reminders go to the email on your vendor account. If you certified with a work address and change jobs, those reminders go nowhere. Microsoft also recommends registering for exams with a personal Microsoft account so your records aren’t lost when you leave an employer.

Double-check the dates it gives you. AI tools occasionally slip on date arithmetic, especially across leap years and month ends.

Common mistakes

• Assuming every cert lasts three years. The Claude Architect certification and Microsoft associate certifications expire after a year. Plan for that on day one.
• Trying to renew too early. Microsoft won’t open renewal until six months before expiry, and Google can reject exam results taken outside the renewal window.
• Mixing up course badges and certifications. Anthropic Academy course completion badges don’t expire, but the proctored Claude certifications do.
