OpenAI doesn’t offer a certification exam, proctored or otherwise, that you can sign up for. Its OpenAI Certifications program is an invite-only pilot for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces, and what anyone can take today is OpenAI Academy: free courses that award badges and certificates of completion, which OpenAI itself says are not certifications.
So if you want an OpenAI or ChatGPT credential, you have two real choices. Earn a free OpenAI Academy badge to show you’ve learned the basics, or take a proctored AI exam from AWS, Microsoft or Google that tests the same skills (prompting, checking output, responsible use) for $99 or $100. Here’s exactly what OpenAI offers, what each credential proves, and which alternative fits you.

Does OpenAI have a certification? How it got here
OpenAI has announced certifications, but so far it has offered them only through pilots and invited organizations. Here’s the timeline from OpenAI’s own posts:
- September 4, 2025: OpenAI announced OpenAI Certifications alongside a planned Jobs Platform. It said certifications would cover different levels of AI fluency, that people could prepare in ChatGPT’s study mode, and that it aimed to certify 10 million Americans by 2030.
- December 9, 2025: the first courses launched. AI Foundations went into ChatGPT through pilots with employers and public-sector partners, including Walmart, John Deere, Lowe’s, Boston Consulting Group and Accenture. ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers launched on Coursera. OpenAI said Coursera, ETS and Credly by Pearson would help with learning design and psychometric rigor, and that more courses plus a hands-on project would build toward a full OpenAI Certification.
- March 5, 2026: OpenAI said its certifications were in pilot at Arizona State University and the California State University system.
- June 12, 2026: OpenAI Academy added three courses for everyday work: AI Foundations, Applied AI Foundations, and Agents and Workflows.
- September 21, 2026: OpenAI added learning paths for developers, leaders, educators and college students, with a badge for passing each course assessment.
- Today: OpenAI’s help center says the OpenAI Certified app is available only to ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces on an invite-only basis. Interested organizations are told to contact their OpenAI account representative.
OpenAI hasn’t published a price, a public sign-up date or a proctored exam format for OpenAI Certifications.

| Accounts you need | ChatGPT workspace access, a Coursera account and a Credly account | A ChatGPT account |
| Price | Not published | Free |
| How you earn it | Complete eligible courses, the pre- and post-course surveys and the final assessment | Complete the course and score 80% or more on its assessment |
| Credential | An OpenAI-issued credential through Coursera, distributed via Credly | A badge through Accredible; pathway certificates of completion |
| Is it a certification? | It’s the program OpenAI calls certifications | No, OpenAI says so in its help center |

How OpenAI Academy badges work
- Sign in with ChatGPT. You can browse without an account, but you need a ChatGPT account to start a course and save progress. No workspace membership is required.
- Pass the assessment. Each assessment has 10–20 questions drawn from a bank of 50. You need 80% or more. If you miss, you can retry with a new randomized set.
- Get the badge. Accredible emails you a link to it once the course’s learning path is marked complete, and you can share it on LinkedIn.
- Pick the right account first. Badges attach to the email you signed up with, and OpenAI says Academy accounts can’t be linked or merged after you start a course.
- Know what it is. A badge says you completed a course and passed its quiz. It isn’t proctored, and OpenAI says it doesn’t guarantee eligibility for a future certification.
Is there a ChatGPT certification?
Not a public exam from OpenAI. The closest thing is the free AI Foundations badge: about 70 minutes of hands-on practice with ChatGPT on how large language models work, prompting and evaluation, adding context, and responsible use. Teachers can take the free AI for Educators course, and OpenAI launched ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers on Coursera in December 2025.
Courses sold as a “ChatGPT certification” by other companies aren’t issued by OpenAI. Some are useful training. Before you pay, check who issues the credential, whether the test is proctored, and whether the employers you want to work for ever mention it.

Recognized alternatives that test ChatGPT-style skills
If you want a credential an employer can verify, these proctored exams test the skills you use in ChatGPT every day: how generative AI works, writing prompts, checking output and using AI responsibly. None of them is about ChatGPT itself; each uses its own vendor’s tools.
| Credential | Price (US) | Format | ChatGPT-style skills it tests | Who can take it | Free practice |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) | $100 | 90 minutes, 65 questions, proctored | Generative AI basics, prompt engineering techniques and responsible AI, on AWS | Anyone | AIF-C01 questions |
| Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-901) | $99 | Proctored; 45 minutes is Microsoft’s Fundamentals standard | How generative AI models work, writing system and user prompts, responsible AI, in Microsoft Foundry; basic Python | Anyone | AI-901 questions |
| Google Cloud Generative AI Leader | $99 plus tax | 90 minutes, 50–60 questions, proctored | Gen AI fundamentals, prompting techniques and business use; no technical experience needed | Anyone | Generative AI Leader questions |
| Claude Certified Associate: Foundations (CCAO-F) | $99 | 120 minutes, 60 questions, proctored | Prompting and task execution, output evaluation, governance and responsible use, with Claude | Claude partner employees only | CCAO-F questions |
AWS and Google certifications are valid for 3 years, Microsoft Fundamentals certifications don’t expire, and Claude certifications last 12 months with a free online renewal.
