ChatGPT is free to start, runs in your browser or on your phone, and can give you something useful within a minute. The hard part is knowing what all the buttons do and which settings are worth changing.
This beginner’s guide covers the whole thing in order: getting in, the screen, your first prompts, uploading files and photos, voice, web search, memory and custom instructions, projects, privacy settings, and whether to pay. Feature details are as of September 2026. If you just want one good result in the next five minutes, start with our quick walkthrough of your first useful ChatGPT chat, then come back here for the full tour.
Step 1: Get into ChatGPT
Go to chatgpt.com in any browser, or install the ChatGPT app for iPhone or Android. There’s also a desktop app for Mac and Windows at chatgpt.com/download.
In supported countries you can type a question at chatgpt.com before you create an account. OpenAI says logged-out access isn’t yet available in Europe, except the UK. Signed out, you get one conversation at a time, and it disappears when your session ends.
A free account is worth it. Select Sign up and use an email and password, or sign in with Google, Microsoft, or Apple. An account saves your chat history and lets you share chats and personalize ChatGPT.
Step 2: Learn the screen in 60 seconds
- Message box (bottom): where you type. It also holds the add button for files and photos, the tools menu, and the Voice icon.
- Sidebar (left, or the menu on your phone): New chat, your past chats, a search for old chats, projects, and your Library of saved files.
- Temporary: a button on a new chat for conversations you don’t want saved (more in Step 9).
- Settings: select your profile icon, then Settings. Personalization and Data Controls live here.
OpenAI adjusts the layout often, so a label may move or change slightly. The features stay in roughly the same places.
Step 3: Write your first prompts
ChatGPT answers what you ask, so vague questions get vague answers. A reliable formula is who you are + what you want + who it’s for + the format.
Instead of: “Help me with a birthday party.”
I'm planning a 7th birthday party for 10 kids at home, budget $150, on a Saturday afternoon. Give me a 3-hour schedule, 4 activity ideas that need no special equipment, and a shopping list in a table with estimated costs. Then keep talking. ChatGPT remembers what you said earlier in the same chat, so short follow-ups work: “Make the activities work indoors,” “Cut the budget to $100,” or “Turn the schedule into a text I can send the other parents.”
Step 4: Upload files and photos
Use the add button in the message box to attach a PDF, Word document, spreadsheet, slide deck, or photo. Then ask ChatGPT to summarize it, pull out key points, compare two documents, or explain something in plain English.
- Photo of a confusing letter: “Explain what this letter is asking me to do and by when.”
- Spreadsheet of expenses: “Group these by category and show me the three biggest.”
- Two versions of a contract: “List every difference between these two files.”
File uploads are included on the free plan with limits. As of September 2026, OpenAI’s help center lists 3 file uploads per day for Free users, and each image can be up to 20 MB. One useful detail: for documents, ChatGPT reads the text and skips embedded images on non-Enterprise plans. If the important part of a PDF is a chart or a scanned page, upload a screenshot of that page instead.
Step 5: Talk to it with voice
Select the Voice icon in the message box, allow microphone access, and start talking. You can interrupt ChatGPT mid-sentence and it will follow along, which makes it good for brainstorming, practicing a conversation, or getting help while your hands are busy.
- Free plan: limited voice access using a lighter voice model. Go and Plus get 3 hours per rolling 24-hour period.
- On your phone: turn on Background conversations under Settings, then Voice, to keep talking while you use other apps or lock the screen.
- Afterward: the transcript is added to the chat, so you can keep going in text.
If you’d rather dictate a message and edit it before sending, use Dictation instead of Voice.
Step 6: Search the web for current information
ChatGPT searches the web on its own when a question needs current information, like news, prices, opening hours, or weather. To force a search, open the tools menu and choose Search, or type / in the message box and pick Search. Web search works on the free plan and even when you’re signed out.
Answers that use search include citations you can click. Use them. OpenAI’s own help center warns that search results can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect, so open the source before you act on anything important.
Step 7: Make it remember you
Two features stop you from repeating yourself.
Custom instructions are standing instructions applied to every chat. On the web, go to Settings, then Personalization, make sure customization is on, and fill in the Custom Instructions field. On mobile it’s Settings, then Customize ChatGPT. Free and Go users get up to 1,500 characters (Plus gets 5,000). Here’s a starter you can adapt:
I'm a [job] in [city, country]. I'm new to AI and not technical. Lead with the direct answer, then add up to 5 bullets. Use plain English and define any jargon. If you're not sure about a fact, say so. If my request is vague, ask me one clarifying question first.Memory lets ChatGPT pick up details from your chats, like your job or your kids’ ages, and use them later. The free plan has a more limited version. To review or turn it off, go to Settings, then Personalization, then Memory. You can also just ask: “What do you remember about me?” If ChatGPT still seems to forget things, here’s why AI forgets you.
Step 8: Organize ongoing work with projects
Projects keep related chats, files, and instructions in one place, so ChatGPT has the same background every time. They’re good for a job search, a class, a home renovation, or a side business.
- Select New project in the sidebar and give it a name.
- Add reference files, like your résumé, class notes, or a quote from a contractor. Free projects hold up to 5 files (Go and Plus, 25).
- Open the project’s menu (the three dots), choose Project settings, and add instructions such as “Act as my study coach. Quiz me on the files in this project. Keep answers short.”
Project instructions apply only inside that project and override your general custom instructions. You can move an existing chat into a project, too.
Step 9: Use temporary chats and data controls
On personal plans, OpenAI may use your chats to improve its models by default. You can change that in about ten seconds.
- Stop training on your chats: profile icon, Settings, Data Controls, then turn off “Improve the model for everyone.” Your chats stay in your history; they just aren’t used for training. (OpenAI’s steps.)
- Use a temporary chat for one-offs: start a new chat and select Temporary. It stays out of your history, doesn’t create memories, and isn’t used to improve models. You choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before your first message. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety (details).
- Export your data: Settings, Data Controls, then Export.
Even with these settings, don’t paste passwords, account numbers, or other people’s private information.

- Believing everything. ChatGPT can state wrong names, numbers, and links with confidence. Check anything you’ll act on, and try these settings and prompts for more accurate answers.
- Using one giant chat for everything. Start a new chat for each new topic, and use projects for ongoing work.
- Accepting the first draft. Two or three short follow-ups usually beat rewriting your prompt from scratch.
- Burning free uploads. With a small daily upload limit on Free, combine related pages into one file when you can.
Try it now
Open chatgpt.com, spend two minutes on custom instructions (Step 7), then run starter prompt 1 on a real email in your drafts folder. Before you close the tab, check your Data Controls setting in Step 9 so you’ve made that choice on purpose.

Frequently asked questions
Is ChatGPT free to use?
Yes. The free plan includes unlimited everyday text chats plus limited file uploads, image creation, voice, and deep research, as of September 2026. Paid plans (Go at $8/month and Plus at $20/month in the US) raise those limits, and Plus adds more advanced models.
Do I need an account to use ChatGPT?
Not to try it. In supported countries you can chat at chatgpt.com without signing up, though you only get one conversation at a time and nothing is saved. A free account keeps your history and lets you use custom instructions.
Does ChatGPT save and train on my chats?
Your chats are saved in your history unless you use a temporary chat. On personal plans, OpenAI may use chats to improve its models unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Settings > Data Controls. Temporary chats aren't used for training.
Can ChatGPT read PDFs and photos?
Yes. Use the add button in the message box to attach documents, spreadsheets, slides, or images, then ask questions about them. Free users have a daily upload limit, and for documents ChatGPT reads the text rather than embedded images, so upload a screenshot if a chart matters.
