AB-731 is the exam for Microsoft Certified: AI Transformation Leader, Microsoft’s certification for business decision-makers who guide AI adoption with Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Foundry, without writing code. It costs $99 in the US, runs 45 minutes, needs a scaled 700 to pass, and Microsoft offers a free official Practice Assessment for it.
The exam tests judgment, not clicks: 35–40% is the business value of generative AI, 35–40% is what Microsoft’s AI apps and services can do for a business, and 20–25% is responsible AI, governance and adoption. This guide breaks down each area, gives you a 10-day study plan, and shows how AB-731 compares with Microsoft’s other business AI certifications.

Who the AI Transformation Leader certification is for
Microsoft designed AB-731 for business decision-makers at all levels who are responsible for transformation and innovation in their teams or organizations. Its audience profile says you should be able to evaluate AI opportunities, champion responsible AI practices and align AI investments with business goals, and that you need experience leading adoption or change management. Microsoft’s course for the exam is pitched at senior leaders and says no technical expertise is required.
In practice, it suits:
- Managers, directors and executives sponsoring a Microsoft 365 Copilot or Microsoft Foundry rollout.
- Transformation, operations and change leads who run AI programs.
- IT leaders who need to talk business value with the rest of the leadership team.
- Consultants and partners who advise customers on Microsoft AI adoption.
If you use Copilot in your own work rather than lead adoption, AB-730 (AI Business Professional) is the closer match. If you design the solutions, Microsoft’s expert architect certification is AB-100. Our Microsoft AI certifications guide maps every option.
AB-731 skills measured and weights
| Skill area (published outline, as of July 22, 2026) | Weight | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Identify the business value of generative AI solutions | 35–40% | Generative AI concepts, costs and ROI, risks such as fabrications and bias, prompting, grounding and RAG, data quality, secure AI, and where traditional machine learning fits |
| 2. Identify benefits, capabilities, and opportunities for Microsoft’s AI apps and services | 35–40% | Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Copilot, Copilot Studio, Microsoft Graph, Researcher and Analyst, build versus buy versus extend, and Foundry Tools |
| 3. Identify an implementation and adoption strategy for Microsoft’s AI apps and services | 20–25% | Responsible AI, governance principles, an AI council, adoption teams and champions, and Copilot and Foundry Tools licensing models |
Look at the verbs in the outline: identify, describe, understand, map, explain and establish. Nothing asks you to configure anything. Microsoft’s July 22, 2026 update made minor changes to the audience profile, the Foundry Tools group in area 2, and the adoption-planning group in area 3. Microsoft also notes that most questions cover generally available features.
A naming note: Microsoft’s Copilot privacy documentation says Microsoft 365 Copilot is now named Microsoft Copilot, with the older name still appearing during the transition, so you will see both in your reading.
Skill area 1: The business value of generative AI (35–40%)
What the published outline lists:
- Foundational concepts: how generative AI differs from other types of AI; selecting a generative AI solution for a business need; how AI models differ, including fine-tuned and pretrained models; cost drivers, including tokens and return-on-investment considerations; challenges such as fabrications, reliability and bias; and when generative AI adds business value, including scalability and automation.
- Benefits and capabilities: the impact and techniques of prompt engineering; business requirements for grounding; how retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is used; how data type, data quality and representative datasets affect results; why secure AI matters; when machine learning adds value and its lifecycle; and security considerations such as application security, data security and authentication.
How to study it: make a one-page glossary of every term in this area and practice explaining each one to a colleague in two sentences. Leaders get tested on trade-offs, so for each concept add one line on business impact: what grounding does for accuracy, why token use drives consumption costs, when a fine-tuned model is worth it over a pretrained one. Our AI terms glossary, hallucinations explainer, data readiness audit and guide to budgets for usage-based AI spend cover the same ground in plain English.
Skill area 2: Microsoft’s AI apps and services (35–40%)
What the published outline lists:
- Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Copilot: mapping business processes and use cases to Copilot; the differences between versions of Copilot; Copilot Chat on the web and mobile; Copilot inside Microsoft 365 apps; Copilot Studio; and Microsoft Graph.
- An integrated Microsoft AI solution: benefits including risk mitigation and safety; mapping business processes to Microsoft’s AI apps and services; when to use Researcher or Analyst in Copilot; and when to build, buy or extend, including the Microsoft 365 Copilot extensibility framework.
- Foundry Tools: mapping business processes to Foundry Tools; capabilities including Azure Vision in Foundry Tools, Azure AI Search and Microsoft Foundry; matching an AI model to a business need; and benefits such as scalability and security.
How to study it: list ten real processes from your organization and decide, for each, whether it belongs in Microsoft 365 Copilot as is, in an agent built with Copilot Studio, or in a custom solution on Microsoft Foundry, and why. For the risk questions, know two facts from Microsoft’s Copilot privacy documentation: Copilot reaches your organization’s content (documents, emails, calendar, chats and meetings) through Microsoft Graph, and only surfaces data the user already has at least view permission to. Microsoft also says prompts, responses and data accessed through Microsoft Graph aren’t used to train the foundation models. Our Copilot readiness checklist and guide to fixing SharePoint oversharing show why permissions decide how safe a rollout is.
Skill area 3: Implementation and adoption strategy (20–25%)
What the published outline lists:
- Align AI strategy with Microsoft’s responsible AI policies: why responsible AI matters, governance principles for AI use, establishing an AI council for strategy, oversight and cross-functional alignment, and making sure AI solutions meet responsible AI standards such as transparency and accountability.
- Plan for adoption: establishing an adoption team, common barriers to adoption, an AI champions program, Copilot license types (pay-as-you-go, monthly, and included with a Microsoft 365 subscription), and Foundry Tools subscription models (pay-as-you-go and commitment tiers).
How to study it: this is the area where real experience helps most. Sketch the governance and adoption plan you would run: who sits on the AI council, what it decides, how champions are picked, and which barriers you expect. Learn the licensing models as concepts rather than memorizing prices, which change. A 10-day AB-731 study plan
About 45 minutes a day is enough if you have led a technology rollout before. If generative AI is new to you, give area 1 a few extra days.
| When | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–2 | Baseline | Read the study guide. Take the free Practice Assessment cold and note your weakest area. Watch Microsoft’s AB-731 exam prep video. |
| Days 3–5 | Area 1 | Work through Explore the business value of generative AI solutions (about 1 hour). Build your glossary with a business-impact line for each term. |
| Days 6–8 | Area 2 | Work through Transform your business with AI (about 2.5 hours). Build your process-to-tool table and learn the Microsoft Graph and permission facts. |
| Day 9 | Area 3 | Work through Drive business value with AI solutions (about 1 hour). Sketch your AI council, champions program and licensing approach. |
| Day 10 | Review and book | Retake the Practice Assessment, reread the outline for your weakest area, try the exam sandbox, then schedule. |

What exam day looks like
- 45 minutes, proctored by Pearson VUE, online or at a test center. The exam may include interactive components.
- Plan to answer from memory. Microsoft documents open Microsoft Learn access during the exam only for associate and expert exams, so don’t count on it for AB-731.
- Breaks: five minutes of break time are built in, the clock keeps running while you are away, and you can’t go back to questions you saw before the break.
- Register with a personal Microsoft account. Microsoft warns that exam records tied to a work or school account are lost if you leave that organization.
- Retakes: 24 hours after a first fail, then 14 days between attempts, up to five attempts in 12 months, and each one is paid (Microsoft’s retake policy). Microsoft also sells Exam Replay, a voucher plus one retake used within 12 months.

Does the AI Transformation Leader certification expire?
Microsoft hasn’t said. Its credential expiration policy covers role-based certifications (valid one year, renewed with a free online assessment) and fundamentals certifications (no expiry), but it doesn’t mention business certifications such as AB-731, and the certification page has no renewal section. After you pass, check the certification in your Microsoft Learn profile for an expiry date. Our guide to which AI certifications expire tracks the rules across vendors.
AB-731 vs AB-730 and Microsoft’s other AI certifications

A practical split for a company rollout: leaders take AB-731, staff take AB-730, and IT takes AB-900. Our guide to which AI certification your IT team should get first covers the IT side.
Is AB-731 worth it?
If your organization runs on Microsoft 365 and you are expected to lead its AI adoption, AB-731 is a low-cost, no-code way to show you understand the value, the tools and the governance, and the outline doubles as a checklist for your own rollout. It is less useful if your company is not a Microsoft shop, because area 2 is entirely about Microsoft’s products. If governance and risk are your main job, also look at the vendor-neutral options in our AI governance certifications guide, such as the IAPP AIGP and PMI-CPMAI.
