For most people, the AI governance certification to start with is the IAPP’s Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP). It has no prerequisites, and the exam costs $649 for IAPP members or $799 for everyone else. If you already hold an audit, risk or security credential, ISACA’s three advanced AI certifications (AAIA, AAIR and AAISM) build on it and carry more weight with people in your field.
Below you’ll find the best pick for each role, a side-by-side table of every AI governance, AI risk, AI audit and responsible-AI credential we could verify on the certifying body’s own site, and then the details for each one: cost, format, prerequisites and what it takes to keep it.
The short answer: the best AI governance certification for your role
- Privacy, legal and compliance: IAPP AIGP. It’s the generalist AI governance credential and covers how laws such as the EU AI Act apply to AI systems.
- IT auditors: ISACA AAIA (Advanced in AI Audit). You need an active CISA, or a CIA, CPA or similar designation with an IT audit or advisory focus. If you audit against ISO/IEC 42001 itself, add an ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor credential.
- Risk managers: ISACA AAIR (Advanced in AI Risk), announced in April 2026. It accepts 25 qualifying certifications, including CRISC, CISA, CISM, CISSP and PMI-RMP.
- Security leaders: ISACA AAISM (Advanced in AI Security Management), open to active CISM or CISSP holders.
- Business leaders: AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01). AI governance and responsible AI leadership is 24% of the exam, and it doesn’t test AWS services. It’s in beta at $50 (standard price $100).
- People building an AI management system: an ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer credential, such as PECB’s.
- Project managers: PMI-CPMAI, which gives 15% of its exam to responsible and trustworthy AI.
- Just starting out: ISACA’s AI Fundamentals Certificate ($120 for members, $144 for non-members), or the AWS AI Practitioner ($100), where 28% of the exam covers responsible AI plus security, compliance and governance.

IAPP AIGP: the default AI governance certification
The IAPP is the professional body behind the CIPP and CIPM privacy certifications. Its AIGP tests whether you can govern AI across its whole life: what AI governance is, how laws, standards and frameworks apply, how to govern AI development, and how to govern AI deployment and use. IAPP’s candidate handbook lists AI compliance, risk management, legal and governance, AI project managers, model ops teams and data scientists among the people it’s built for.
- Cost: $649 for IAPP members, $799 for non-members. IAPP’s candidate handbook lists retakes at $475 for members and $625 for non-members.
- Format: 100 multiple-choice questions (85 scored, 15 unscored) in 2 hours 45 minutes, with an optional 15-minute break. Some questions are built around case studies. You take it through Pearson VUE, at a test center or online.
- Passing score: 300 on a scale of 100 to 500.
- Prerequisites: none.
- Published outline: body of knowledge version 2.1, effective February 2, 2026. Domain I, foundations of AI governance (16–20 questions). Domain II, how laws, standards and frameworks apply to AI (19–23). Domain III, governing AI development (21–25). Domain IV, governing AI deployment and use (21–25).
- Keeping it: a two-year term. Report 20 continuing education credits tied to the AIGP body of knowledge and pay the certification maintenance fee: $250 per term for non-members (the first term is included in the exam fee), or covered by IAPP membership.
- Deadline: you must take the exam within one year of buying it.
Pick the AIGP if you sit in privacy, legal, compliance or a new AI governance role and don’t hold an ISACA credential. Unlike ISACA’s AI credentials it needs no prior certification, and unlike the ISO/IEC 42001 and PMI options it has no required course.
ISACA’s advanced AI certifications: AAIA, AAIR and AAISM
ISACA (the body behind CISA, CISM and CRISC) built its AI credentials as add-ons. Each one requires a qualifying certification you already hold, so they say “I already do this job, now with AI.”
All three share a format: 90 multiple-choice questions in 2.5 hours (150 minutes), delivered by PSI at a test center or remotely proctored, and scored from 200 to 800 with 450 to pass. Each exam costs $459 for ISACA members or $599 for non-members, plus a one-time $50 application fee once you pass. You get four attempts in a rolling 12 months, with waits of 30, 90 and 90 days between them, and you pay the full fee each time. After passing, you have five years to apply for the certification.
AAIA: Advanced in AI Audit
ISACA announced the AAIA in May 2025 for IT auditors. Any active CISA holder qualifies. So do holders of the CIA, a US, Canadian, Australian or Japanese CPA, ACCA and several other accounting designations, as long as their role focuses on IT audit or IT advisory.
- Domains: AI Governance and Risk (33%), AI Operations (46%), AI Auditing Tools and Techniques (21%).
- Languages: English, Simplified Chinese and Spanish.
- Keeping it: 10 CPE hours in AI each year (30 over three years), a $20 (members) or $35 (non-members) annual fee, and an active prerequisite certification.
AAIR: Advanced in AI Risk
The newest of the three, announced April 15, 2026, for IT risk professionals. You need proven experience in IT risk or advisory roles plus one of 25 qualifying certifications. ISACA’s list includes CISA, CISM, CRISC, CGEIT, CDPSE, CGRC, CISSP, CIA, CPA and PMI-RMP.
- Domains: AI Risk Governance and Framework Integration (37%), AI Life Cycle Risk Management (21%), AI Risk Program Management (42%).
- Languages: English, Spanish and Chinese.
- Keeping it: 10 CPE hours a year (30 over three years) and an annual fee of $45 for members or $85 for non-members, more than the AAIA and AAISM fees.
AAISM: Advanced in AI Security Management
Launched August 19, 2025, for security managers who hold an active CISM or CISSP. It’s as much a security credential as a governance one: two of its three domains are governance and risk.
- Domains: AI Governance and Program Management (31%), AI Risk Management (31%), AI Technologies and Controls (38%).
- Languages: English, Spanish and Japanese.
- Keeping it: 10 CPE hours a year (30 over three years), a $20 or $35 annual fee, and proof that your CISM or CISSP is still active.
ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer
ISO/IEC 42001 is the international standard for an AI management system (AIMS). ISO writes the standard, but it doesn’t certify people. Personal ISO/IEC 42001 credentials come from third-party training and certification bodies, and each one sets its own exam, experience rules and fees. Here are the two we checked.
PECB ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer
- How you get it: a five-day course with the exam on day 5. PECB says certification and exam fees are included in the course price, which its training partners set (PECB’s course pages don’t list one). If you fail, you can retake the exam once for free within 12 months.
- Exams: 3 hours each. The Lead Implementer exam is 80 multiple-choice questions, open book, with 70% to pass. The Lead Auditor exam covers seven domains, from AI management system basics to running an ISO/IEC 42001 audit program.
- Credential levels: passing the exam alone earns the Provisional Auditor or Provisional Implementer credential. The Lead credential needs five years of work experience (two of them in AI) and 300 hours of audit or AI management system project work.
- Keeping it: valid for three years. Lead credentials need 90 CPD hours per three-year cycle and a $390 maintenance fee per cycle. Provisional credentials have no maintenance requirements.
BSI ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor course
BSI runs an ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor training course. The UK version is four days, priced at £2,585 plus VAT, and ends with a BSI Training Academy certificate. Length and price vary by country. BSI’s course page doesn’t describe a separate exam or renewal requirements, so treat it as a course certificate rather than a maintained certification.
PMI-CPMAI: for project managers running AI work
PMI’s Certified Professional in Managing AI is about running AI projects with the CPMAI methodology. It isn’t a pure governance credential, but its first domain, Support Responsible and Trustworthy AI Efforts (15%), covers data governance, coordinating with legal and compliance on AI governance, and model oversight.
- Prerequisite: you must finish the PMI-CPMAI Exam Prep Course before you can schedule the exam. No prior project management, technical or AI experience is required.
- Format: 120 questions (100 scored, 20 unscored) in 160 minutes, at a Pearson VUE test center or online. You get up to three attempts in a one-year eligibility period.
- Cost: PMI sets the course and exam price by region and membership, and membership isn’t required. We couldn’t confirm a current US price on PMI’s site.
- Keeping it: three years, with 30 professional development units (PDUs).
Other responsible AI credentials worth knowing

How to choose an AI governance certification
- Start from what you already hold. CISA points to the AAIA. CISM or CISSP points to the AAISM. CRISC or another risk credential points to the AAIR. If you hold none of these, the AIGP needs no prerequisite at all.
- Match the language of the people who hire you. Privacy and legal teams know the IAPP. Audit and risk teams know ISACA. Companies seeking ISO/IEC 42001 certification for their AI management system look for 42001 lead auditors and lead implementers.
- Count the whole cost. ISACA adds a $50 application fee and an annual maintenance fee. Non-members of the IAPP pay $250 per two-year term after the first. PECB rolls the exam into a five-day course. Our real cost guide shows how these compare.
- Check the upkeep. Renewal rules range from 10 CPE hours a year to nothing at all. See do AI certifications expire? and track your dates with the free renewal tracker.
- Pair the credential with real work. Governance is a practice, not a badge. Set up a 30-minute AI council, publish an AI acceptable-use policy and build your AI inventory. The lightweight operating model for mid-size IT ties them together.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI governance certification?
For most people it's the IAPP's AIGP (Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional), because it has no prerequisites and is built for privacy, legal, compliance and governance roles. If you already hold an ISACA credential, the AAIA (audit), AAIR (risk) or AAISM (security) builds on it.
How much does the AIGP certification cost?
The AIGP exam costs $649 for IAPP members and $799 for non-members. IAPP's candidate handbook lists retakes at $475 and $625, and non-members pay a $250 certification maintenance fee for each two-year term after the first.
Does the AIGP have prerequisites?
No. The IAPP's candidate handbook says there are no prerequisites for the AIGP, so anyone can buy and take the exam. It's 100 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours 45 minutes, with 300 out of 500 needed to pass.
Which ISACA AI certification should I take?
Take the AAIA if you're an IT auditor with a CISA (or a CIA, CPA or similar with an IT audit focus), the AAISM if you hold an active CISM or CISSP, and the AAIR if you work in IT risk and hold one of its 25 qualifying certifications. Each exam is 90 questions in 2.5 hours and costs $459 for members or $599 for non-members.
Is there an ISO 42001 certification for individuals?
ISO doesn't certify people, but third-party bodies do. PECB, for example, offers ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer credentials through a five-day course with a 3-hour exam, and the Lead level needs five years of work experience, two of them in AI.
How long do AI governance certifications last?
The AIGP runs in two-year terms with 20 continuing education credits. ISACA's AAIA, AAIR and AAISM need 10 CPE hours a year, PECB and PMI credentials last three years, and CSA's TAISE certificate doesn't expire.
Is there a cheap or entry-level AI governance certification?
The lowest-cost options we verified are AWS's AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01) at $50 while it's in beta, the AWS AI Practitioner at $100 and ISACA's AI Fundamentals Certificate at $120 for members or $144 for non-members. None of them is a full governance credential like the AIGP, but each covers responsible AI.
