AI Product Manager Certification: 5 Real Exams and the Courses Worth Knowing (2026)

Beehiiv art card-ai-product-manager-certification

There is no official “AI product manager certification” from Microsoft, AWS, Google Cloud, PMI or Anthropic as of October 2026. The closest real, proctored options are PMI-CPMAI (managing AI projects end to end), Microsoft’s AB-731 AI Transformation Leader, the Google Cloud Generative AI Leader, and AWS’s AI Practitioner and new AI Business Strategist, the only one of these whose exam guide names product managers as a typical candidate.

None of the five asks you to write code, and the four Microsoft, Google and AWS exams cost $50 to $100. If you want to learn the craft of building AI products rather than earn a badge, university programs from MIT xPRO and Duke are the other route, and they award a course certificate, not a certification. Below: all of them side by side, what each one proves, and which to pick for your situation.

Every option compared

The first five are proctored exams: you book a slot and answer under a proctor’s watch, online or at a test center. The last two are courses that end in a certificate of completion. Prices are US list prices before tax.

Certification, certificate or a “certified AI PM” title?

A certification means you passed a timed, proctored exam set by the issuer. A course certificate means you completed a course, often with projects, but nobody checked under exam conditions. Both can be useful: the exam is better proof for a resume, and a good course usually teaches more.

You’ll also find training companies selling their own “certified AI product manager” titles. Some are good courses; the title itself is only as strong as its reputation. Before paying, check whether it ends in a proctored exam and whether product leaders at the companies you want to work for recognize it.

A product manager vs project manager note: PMI-CPMAI is a project-management credential at heart. PMI says it requires no prior project management, technical or AI experience, and that project or product management knowledge is valuable. If you run delivery as much as discovery, it fits well; if you mostly do discovery and strategy, the AWS or Microsoft business exams are closer to your day.

The 5 exams in detail

PMI-CPMAI: PMI Certified Professional in Managing AI

PMI-CPMAI is the most substantial of the five. You must finish PMI’s PMI-CPMAI Exam Prep Course before you can book the exam, then answer 120 questions (100 scored, 20 unscored pretest) in 160 minutes, through Pearson VUE at a test center (PMI’s recommendation) or online. PMI sells the course and exam together; the fee depends on your region and membership status, and membership isn’t required. You have 12 months from purchase to get certified, with up to three attempts in that year, and each retake costs another exam fee.

The exam content outline weights: identify business needs and solutions (26%), identify data needs (26%), operationalize the AI solution (17%), manage AI model development and evaluation (16%) and support responsible and trustworthy AI (15%). The certification runs on a 3-year cycle and needs 30 professional development units (PDUs) to renew. Our PMI-CPMAI study guide covers the domains, the six CPMAI phases and the costs in detail.

Microsoft AB-731: AI Transformation Leader

AB-731 is for business decision-makers who guide AI adoption. Microsoft lists it at the Beginner level with the role “Business Leader,” and says candidates evaluate AI opportunities, champion responsible AI and align AI investments with business goals, without writing code. It costs $99 in the US and runs 45 minutes, with 700 to pass. The skills outline splits 35–40% on the business value of generative AI, 35–40% on the benefits and capabilities of Microsoft’s AI apps and services, and 20–25% on an implementation and adoption strategy. Microsoft hasn’t published how long its business certifications stay valid. There’s a free Practice Assessment on the certification page.

Go deeper: AB-731 study guide. If you use Microsoft 365 Copilot every day rather than lead its rollout, the AB-730 AI Business Professional exam is the hands-on sibling.

Google Cloud Generative AI Leader

Google says this certification is for anyone in any job role, with or without hands-on technical experience. It costs $99 plus tax, runs 90 minutes with 50–60 multiple choice questions, and is offered in English, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese, online or at a test center. The exam guide weights fundamentals of gen AI at about 30%, Google Cloud’s gen AI offerings at about 35%, techniques to improve model output at about 20% and business strategies for a gen AI solution at about 15%. It’s valid for 3 years.

AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01)

AWS’s foundational AI exam costs $100 and has 65 questions in 90 minutes, with 700 to pass. AWS lists line-of-business roles among its candidates, alongside cloud, development and data roles. The biggest domain is applications of foundation models (28%), then fundamentals of generative AI (24%) and fundamentals of AI and ML (20%), with responsible AI and security, compliance and governance at 14% each. It’s valid for 3 years. AWS lists developing or coding AI/ML models as out of scope, but it’s more technical than the business exams on this page, which helps if you work closely with engineers.

AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01)

This is the newest option and the closest to an AI product manager exam. AWS’s exam guide says the target candidate evaluates, champions or scales AI initiatives and works alongside technical teams without building AI solutions, and lists product managers and program managers among the typical roles. No coding or hands-on AWS experience is required; AWS recommends about 6 months of working with or alongside teams adopting AI. The exam does not test AWS services knowledge.

It’s in beta now: $50 for 85 questions in 170 minutes, in English or Japanese ($100 and 130 minutes for the standard version). The four domains are AI strategy and business value creation (28%), AI fundamentals and literacy (24%), AI governance and responsible AI leadership (24%) and business readiness, leadership and AI transformation (24%). Passing takes 700, and AWS adds an Early Adopter badge for anyone who earns it by February 15, 2027. It’s valid for 3 years. See our AWS AI Business Strategist guide.

University courses for AI product managers

If you’d rather learn to build AI products than pass an exam, these programs are worth a look (details from the universities’ own pages). They award a certificate of completion, not a certification.

  • MIT xPRO, Designing and Building AI Products and Services: $3,200 for 12 weeks. You learn the stages of designing AI-based products and the basics of machine and deep learning, and you build an AI product proposal. MIT lists it as developed with Emeritus. Details on MIT Professional and Executive Learning.
  • MIT xPRO, Executive Certificate in AI Strategy and Product Innovation: $9,550 for 26 weeks, combining the course above with AI Strategy and Leadership. Details on MIT Professional and Executive Learning.
  • Duke University, AI Product Management specialization: a Coursera course series from Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering on how machine learning works, leading ML projects and designing human-centered AI products, with no programming required. Duke names product managers and product owners among its audience. Duke’s page doesn’t list a price or length, so check the Duke course page and its Coursera listing.

Other options product managers ask about

Whichever you choose, the skills that matter most on the job are the ones a badge can’t show: picking the right first use case, measuring it and getting a business owner to sponsor it. Our guides to picking your first AI use case, measuring AI value and why AI pilots fail cover that side.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official AI product manager certification?

No. As of October 2026, Microsoft, AWS, Google Cloud, PMI and Anthropic don't offer an exam by that name. The closest proctored options are PMI-CPMAI, Microsoft AB-731, Google Cloud Generative AI Leader, AWS AI Practitioner and AWS AI Business Strategist.

What is the best AI certification for product managers?

AWS Certified AI Business Strategist is the closest match: its exam guide lists product managers as a typical candidate and it tests AI strategy, business value and governance. PMI-CPMAI is the deeper option if you also run AI project delivery, and AB-731 or Google's Generative AI Leader fit Microsoft or Google Cloud companies.

Do AI product manager certifications require coding?

No. Microsoft says AB-731 candidates aren't expected to write code, AWS says the AI Business Strategist needs no coding or hands-on AWS experience, Google's Generative AI Leader is for any role with or without technical experience, and PMI-CPMAI needs no prior technical or AI experience.

How much does an AI product manager certification cost?

The vendor exams cost $50 to $100: AWS AI Business Strategist is $50 in beta ($100 standard), AB-731 and Google Generative AI Leader are $99, and AWS AI Practitioner is $100. PMI-CPMAI is sold as a course and exam bundle priced by region and membership, and MIT xPRO courses cost $3,200 or $9,550.

Is PMI-CPMAI for product managers or project managers?

It's a project management credential for running AI projects with PMI's CPMAI method, but PMI says it needs no prior project management experience and that product management knowledge is valuable. It suits product managers who own AI delivery from idea to launch.

Which AI product manager certification is the fastest to earn?

Microsoft AB-731 has the shortest exam at 45 minutes and $99, with no coding. PMI-CPMAI takes the longest, because you must finish PMI's prep course before the 160-minute exam.

How long do these certifications last?

AWS AI Practitioner, AWS AI Business Strategist and Google Cloud Generative AI Leader are valid for 3 years. PMI-CPMAI runs on a 3-year cycle with 30 PDUs to renew. Microsoft hasn't published a validity period for AB-731.

Is an AI product management course certificate worth it?

It can be if you want to learn the craft, since courses like MIT xPRO's include projects. But a certificate of completion isn't a proctored certification, so for resume proof, pair it with one of the vendor exams.
