How this works: phases and hour estimates are our planning assumptions for steady part-time study, not a guarantee. Courses link to the official provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, AWS, Hugging Face, fast.ai, NIST and python.org). Certification prices and levels come from each vendor's own page, linked in the table, and are listed with the date we last checked them. Checked October 18, 2026. Education only, not career advice.

How to use the roadmap builder

  1. Pick a target role. Not sure? Start with prompt engineer, then compare it with AI engineer and AI product manager.
  2. Choose your starting point. Developers and data people skip or shorten the coding phases.
  3. Enter the hours you can study each week to get a realistic finish date.
  4. Set a certification budget, from free only to any amount.

How to become a prompt engineer: the short version

  1. Learn how AI models work: what they are good at, where they fail, and how tokens and context windows limit them.
  2. Practice prompting on real tasks: clear instructions, examples, step-by-step reasoning and structured output. Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s prompt engineering guides are free and official.
  3. Learn to test prompts: build a small set of test cases and score different versions. This is what separates a prompt engineer from someone who writes good prompts.
  4. Learn enough Python to call a model API, so you can run a prompt over hundreds of inputs and measure the results.
  5. Show your work: a before-and-after prompt library, an evaluation report and one small tool beat any certificate.

Do you need a degree or coding?

No degree is required to learn prompt engineering, and you can start without code. But few jobs carry the title “prompt engineer”. The skill is usually part of AI engineer, AI product, content and AI training roles, and most of those expect at least basic Python and API skills. If you do not code yet, the roadmap adds a light coding phase. If you want flexible paid practice while you learn, writing and rating prompts on AI training platforms is a real option.

Certifications for prompt engineers

There is no single official prompt engineering certification. These foundational AI certifications fit the path, with prices from each vendor’s page:

CertificationVendorLevelExam price
AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01)AWSFoundational$100
Google Cloud Certified Generative AI LeaderGoogle CloudFoundational$99
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure AI Foundations AssociateOracleFoundations AssociateFree
Claude Certified Associate: Foundations (CCAO-F)AnthropicFoundations$99 (Claude Partner Network members)

We compare ten options, including free ones, in prompt engineering certifications, honestly compared.

Portfolio projects that get interviews

  • A before-and-after prompt library: ten prompts for real tasks, each with the weak version, the improved one and why it works.
  • An evaluation report: one prompt, 30 test cases, three versions and a table of scores.
  • A small tool: a script that runs your best prompt over a spreadsheet of inputs and saves the results.

Frequently asked questions

Can you become a prompt engineer without coding?

You can learn prompting without code, and some AI training work pays for it. Most jobs that use prompt engineering also expect basic Python and the ability to call a model API, so plan a light coding phase.

How long does it take to become a prompt engineer?

Starting from scratch, our roadmap estimates about 130 hours, or about 24 weeks at 6 hours a week. Developers can skip most of the coding phase and finish sooner. These are planning estimates, not guarantees.

Is prompt engineer still a real job?

Few postings use the exact title. The skill is in demand inside AI engineer, AI product manager, content and AI training roles, so build it alongside one of those paths.

What is the best certification for prompt engineering?

There is no single official one. Foundational AI certifications such as AWS Certified AI Practitioner or Google Cloud Generative AI Leader show the basics, and a portfolio of tested prompts shows the skill itself.

Do I need a degree to become a prompt engineer?

No degree is required to learn it, and the free courses are open to anyone. Some employers still ask for a degree for engineering or product roles, so check the postings you are aiming for.
