Yes, for most people in Microsoft workplaces: Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals costs $99 in the US, takes 45 minutes and never expires, which makes it one of the cheapest AI credentials to hold for good. The 2026 catch is that AI-901, the exam that replaced AI-900, now expects basic Python and hands-on Microsoft Foundry skills, so it is no longer a no-code badge.

What AI-901 costs, and how to pay less
The AI-901 certification costs $99 in the US. Microsoft sets exam prices by the country where you test, and the listed prices don’t include tax:

- Student pricing. Microsoft offers academic pricing on certification exams in most countries (not India or China). Mark yourself as a student in your Microsoft Learn profile and verify your academic status before you book.
- Exam Replay. A Pearson VUE package with one exam voucher plus one retake of the same exam, both taken within 12 months. Microsoft’s offers page doesn’t list the price.
- Event and challenge vouchers. Microsoft runs time-limited offers. The 2026 Microsoft Credentials AI Challenge vouchers expired on June 30, 2026 and didn’t cover AI-901, so don’t count on one.
- Retakes cost full price. You can retake 24 hours after a first fail, then wait 14 days between attempts, with at most five attempts in 12 months.

Is AI-900 still worth it?
You can’t take AI-900 anymore. Microsoft retired it on June 30, 2026, and the same credential, Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals, now requires AI-901. If you already passed AI-900, you don’t need to do anything: Fundamentals certifications don’t expire, and Microsoft says existing holders need to take no action.
What changed: AI-900 required no coding and had five “describe” domains (workloads, machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing and generative AI). AI-901 has two domains and asks you to implement AI solutions in Microsoft Foundry with basic Python. The side-by-side is in AI-900 vs AI-901.
The never-expires math
Most comparable AI certifications run on a clock: AWS AI Practitioner lasts 3 years, NVIDIA’s associate certifications last 2, and the CertNexus CAIP lasts 3 (see the renewal rules for AI certifications). Microsoft Fundamentals certifications don’t expire at all, so $99 once buys a permanent, verifiable line on your résumé. For students and early-career professionals, that cost per year is hard to beat.
Who it pays off for
- Anyone in a Microsoft workplace. If your company runs on Microsoft 365, Teams, Copilot and Azure, this is the AI credential your managers and recruiters will recognize.
- Students and career starters. A low-cost permanent credential, with academic pricing in most countries.
- Technical beginners who can read basic Python and want a first credential that shows they can build with Microsoft Foundry.
- People starting Microsoft’s AI path. AI-901 is the fundamentals step before AI-103 (apps and agents) or AI-300 (MLOps). The full Microsoft AI certification path.
Who should pick something else
- AWS-shop professionals. The AWS AI Practitioner is the same idea in your ecosystem (head-to-head here).
- Already-technical builders. You’ll find AI-901 easy. Treat it as a quick warm-up at most, then aim at AI-103 or the NVIDIA NCA-GENL for LLM depth.
- Non-coders in business roles. AI-901 now expects Python. Microsoft’s AI Business Professional (AB-730) and AI Transformation Leader (AB-731) exams are $99 and 45 minutes with no coding.
- Zero-Microsoft environments. A vendor-matched or vendor-neutral certification will read better on your résumé.
