AIGP Exam Cost: What the IAPP AI Governance Certification Really Costs

Beehiiv art card-aigp-exam-cost

The AIGP exam costs $799 if you aren’t an IAPP member and $649 if you are, and the non-member price includes the maintenance fee for your first two-year certification term. Retakes are discounted, IAPP’s training is optional, and whether membership saves you money depends on what else you buy.

This page does the math: every AIGP fee IAPP publishes, when membership pays off (and when it doesn’t), what a retake or a missed deadline costs, and what you’ll pay to keep the credential. For the four exam domains and a study plan, see our AIGP study guide; to compare it with other AI governance credentials, see our AI governance certifications guide.

Two things the table doesn’t show. First, IAPP’s store sells training and the exam as separate products, so a training course never includes your exam fee. Second, IAPP’s handbook says the certification isn’t awarded until your maintenance fee or membership fee has been received, so non-members should check that the CMF is on their exam order.

How the AIGP’s price compares

At $799, the AIGP sits toward the top end of AI certification exam fees. ISACA’s AI security and AI audit credentials (AAISM and AAIA) cost $599 for non-members plus a $50 application fee, but each requires an existing credential first (CISM or CISSP for AAISM; CISA or an approved audit or accounting credential for AAIA). The AIGP has no prerequisites. Our AI governance certifications guide compares the options by role, the guide to what AI certifications cost covers the wider field, and the AI certification cost calculator adds up exams, training and renewals for any combination.

Member or non-member: which is cheaper?

IAPP membership takes $150 off the exam and covers your maintenance fee, but Professional membership costs $295 a year. Here’s how that plays out, using IAPP’s published prices and assuming you pass on the first try (this is our math, not an IAPP quote):

What you buyNon-memberProfessional member ($295/yr)$110 member (government, nonprofit, higher ed)
Exam only$799$944$759
Exam and practice exam$859$994$809
Exam, online training and practice exam$2,054$1,989$1,804
Hold the AIGP for 4 years (exam plus one renewal)$1,049$1,829$1,089
  • Exam only: paying as a non-member is cheapest unless you qualify for a $110 or $50 membership.
  • Buying IAPP’s training too: Professional membership saves about $65 in year one, and the $110 tier saves about $250.
  • Long term: for the AIGP alone, the non-member route ($250 every two years) costs less than keeping a $295 membership every year. Membership earns its keep only if you use its other benefits, which IAPP lists as free and discounted web conferences, KnowledgeNet chapter meetings, training discounts and its resource center.
  • Students: a $50 student membership plus the $649 member price is $699, $100 less than the non-member price, if you’re currently enrolled.

IAPP’s membership store lists the six individual tiers and says each one covers the CMF while it’s maintained. It shows a single member exam price and doesn’t spell out eligibility for the discounted tiers, so confirm you qualify before you join.

What an AIGP retake costs

IAPP’s AIGP candidate handbook lists retakes at $625 for non-members and $475 for members, and IAPP’s current FAQ confirms that failed exams get a discounted retake price (it points to the store for the amount, so check it at checkout). We didn’t find a waiting period between attempts in IAPP’s handbook or FAQ.

If you…Non-member totalMember total
Pass on the first try$799$649 plus membership
Fail once, pass on the second try$1,424$1,124 plus membership
Fail twice, pass on the third try$2,049$1,599 plus membership

Your score report breaks your result down by blueprint domain, which tells you where to focus before a retake. IAPP warns that you can’t average those percentages to get your overall score, because the domains have different numbers of questions. Compared with a $625 retake, the $60 official practice exam is cheap insurance.

Fees you can lose

  • The one-year clock. You must schedule and complete the exam within one year of purchase, or the fee is forfeited. You can reschedule as many times as you need inside that year.
  • Test center changes. Pearson VUE needs at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an in-person appointment, according to IAPP’s FAQ.
  • Online appointments. IAPP’s FAQ says remotely proctored exams can be rescheduled up to 15 minutes after the scheduled start time. Book at least 24 hours ahead either way.
  • Lapsed upkeep. If you miss your CMF or continuing education requirements and don’t fix it by the end of the next term, IAPP revokes the credential, and getting it back means passing the exam again.

What it costs to keep the AIGP

The AIGP runs in two-year terms that start the day after you pass. To recertify, you report 20 continuing education credits tied to the AIGP body of knowledge and keep your CMF paid: $250 per term for non-members, or covered by membership.

Credits don’t have to cost much. IAPP’s handbook says IAPP-created AI content such as webinars and research is tagged when it qualifies for AIGP credit, and its online AIGP training is listed at 13 CPEs. Our guide to AI certification renewal rules compares the AIGP’s upkeep with other credentials, and the renewal tracker keeps your dates in one place.

5 ways to spend less on the AIGP

  1. Start with the free material. The body of knowledge and exam blueprint is IAPP’s main guide to what the exam covers, and the free AIGP study guide is a request away. IAPP recommends at least 30 hours of study for its exams.
  2. Don’t join just for the exam discount. Use the table above: membership pays off when you also buy training or qualify for a discounted tier.
  3. Ask your employer. If AI governance is part of your job, the exam and training are a training expense. IAPP also sells group training delivered on-site. Our guide to building an AI training budget helps you make the case.
  4. Use your existing IAPP certification. If you already hold a CIPP, CIPM or CIPT, your first AIGP attempt is discounted.
  5. Practice before you sit it. The $50 or $60 practice exam costs about a tenth of a retake.
