AB-100 is the exam for Microsoft Certified: Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert, Microsoft’s expert-level certification for architects who plan, design and deploy AI and agent solutions across Dynamics 365, Power Platform, Copilot Studio and Microsoft Foundry. Passing AB-100 is only half of it: you also need one of 13 associate-level certifications that Microsoft lists as prerequisites, such as AI-103, AI-300, AB-620 or PL-400.
The exam costs $165 in the US and needs a scaled 700 to pass, and the English version gets a minor update on October 14, 2026. This guide covers the prerequisite path, the three skill areas and their weights, what the update changes, a 6-week study plan and the free official prep, including Microsoft’s free AB-100 Practice Assessment.

AB-100 prerequisites: the 13 associate certifications that qualify
This is the part that is easy to miss. Microsoft’s certification page says that in addition to passing AB-100, you must earn at least one of these associate-level certifications. Any one of them counts:
| Track | Qualifying associate certifications |
|---|---|
| Azure AI and machine learning | AI-103 (Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate), AI-300 (Machine Learning Operations Engineer Associate) |
| Copilot Studio and AI apps | AB-620 (AI Agent Builder Associate), AB-410 (Intelligent Applications Builder Associate) |
| Power Platform | PL-400 (Power Platform Developer Associate) |
| Dynamics 365 customer engagement | MB-230 (Customer Service Functional Consultant Associate), AB-210 (Dynamics 365 Sales AI Consultant Associate), AB-250 (Dynamics 365 Contact Center AI Engineer Associate) |
| Dynamics 365 finance and operations | MB-310 (Finance Functional Consultant Associate), MB-330 (Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Associate), MB-500 (Finance and Operations Apps Developer Associate) |
| Dynamics 365 Business Central | MB-800 (Business Central Functional Consultant Associate), MB-820 (Business Central Developer Associate) |
Four things to know before you pick one:
- The exam page shows an older list. On October 8, 2026, the AB-100 exam page still listed 15 options, including MB-280 and PL-200. Microsoft’s June 2026 credentials roundup lists MB-280 as retiring in July 2026 (successor AB-210) and PL-200 in August 2026 (successor AB-410), and the certification page lists only the 13 above. Go by the certification page.
- MB-330 is on its way out. The same roundup says MB-330 is expected to retire in December 2026, with AB-330 as its recommended successor. If you are choosing a prerequisite from scratch, pick one that isn’t retiring.
- Order isn’t spelled out. The certification page says you need both the AB-100 exam and one qualifying associate certification; it doesn’t say which has to come first. If you plan to sit AB-100 before your prerequisite, recheck the page before you book.
- The expert certification doesn’t lapse with the associate one. Microsoft’s renewal FAQ says an expert certification does not automatically expire if its associate prerequisite expires. You renew each one separately.
Which prerequisite fits your path
Pick the associate certification closest to the work you already do. This is our suggestion, not a Microsoft rule:
| If you mainly… | Associate certification that fits | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| Build generative AI apps and agents in Microsoft Foundry | AI-103 | AI-103 study guide |
| Deploy and run machine learning and generative AI models in production | AI-300 | AI-300 study guide |
| Build agents in Copilot Studio | AB-620 | Not covered yet |
| Build Power Platform apps and solutions | PL-400 or AB-410 | Not covered yet |
| Configure Dynamics 365 apps for customers | The MB or AB associate for your app | Not covered yet |
If you hold none of these yet, the prerequisite is the bigger job. AI-103, AI-300 and AB-620 are each a separate $165 exam with a 120-minute time limit, according to their Microsoft Learn pages. If AI-103 is your route, start with our AI-103 cost guide and 3-week AI-103 plan.
What changes on October 14, 2026
Microsoft’s certification and exam pages say the English version of AB-100 will be updated on October 14, 2026, and the study guide already shows “Skills measured as of October 14, 2026.” The change log is short:
- The three skill areas and the audience profile: no change.
- “Design overall AI strategy for business solutions” (inside Plan): minor.
- “Design AI and agents for business solutions” (inside Design): minor.
- “Design the ALM process for AI-powered business solutions” (inside Deploy): minor.
What it means for you: study the October 14 outline whichever date you test, because it is the only outline Microsoft now publishes and the changes are minor. Localized versions are updated about eight weeks after English. If the exam isn’t offered in your preferred language, you can request an extra 30 minutes.
Expect two sets of product names while you study. The study guide uses Microsoft Foundry and Foundry Tools, while parts of the exam page still say Azure AI Foundry, Azure AI services and Azure OpenAI. Microsoft’s Copilot privacy documentation also says Microsoft 365 Copilot is now named Microsoft Copilot, with the older names still appearing during the transition.
AB-100 skills measured and weights
| Skill area (published outline, as of Oct 14, 2026) | Weight | Where the work happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Plan AI-powered business solutions | 25–30% | Requirements, AI strategy, Cloud Adoption Framework, ROI and build-versus-buy decisions |
| 2. Design AI-powered business solutions | 25–30% | Copilot Studio, Dynamics 365 apps, Power Apps, Microsoft 365 agents, Microsoft Foundry |
| 3. Deploy AI-powered business solutions | 40–45% | Monitoring and telemetry, testing, ALM, security, governance and responsible AI |
Deploy is the biggest single area at 40–45%, and despite the name it is mostly about the architect’s decisions around go-live: how agents are monitored and tested, how changes move through application lifecycle management (ALM), and how security, governance and responsible AI are designed in. Microsoft notes that the bullets under each skill illustrate how it is assessed, that related topics may be covered, and that most questions cover generally available features (Preview features can appear if they are commonly used).
Skill area 1: Plan AI-powered business solutions (25–30%)
What the published outline lists:
- Analyze requirements: when agents fit task automation, data analytics and decision-making; reviewing grounding data for accuracy, relevance, timeliness, cleanliness and availability; and organizing business data so other AI systems can use it.
- Design the overall AI strategy: the AI adoption process from the Cloud Adoption Framework for Azure; multi-agent designs across Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio and Microsoft Foundry; use cases for prebuilt agents; rules and constraints for AI components; when to build custom agents or extend Microsoft 365 Copilot; when to create custom models or customized small language models; prompt library and prompt engineering guidelines; the elements of a Microsoft AI Center of Excellence; and solutions that span several Dynamics 365 apps.
- Evaluate costs and benefits: ROI criteria including total cost of ownership, an ROI analysis for a business process, build versus buy versus extend, and a model router that sends each request to the most suitable model.
How to study it: write a one-page decision sheet. For each choice in the outline (prebuilt agent or custom agent, extend Microsoft 365 Copilot or build in Copilot Studio or Foundry, off-the-shelf model or custom model), write the business signal that tips the decision. Then practice one ROI case end to end: costs (licensing, consumption, build effort, support), benefits (hours saved, errors avoided) and total cost of ownership over a few years. Our guides to measuring AI value and baseline metrics for AI pilots walk through the same thinking on a real project, and Microsoft’s Cloud Adoption Framework AI strategy guidance is the source the outline names.
Skill area 2: Design AI-powered business solutions (25–30%)
What the published outline lists:
- Design AI and agents: business terms and customizations for Copilot in Dynamics 365 customer experience and service apps, connectors for Copilot in Dynamics 365 Sales, and agents for Dynamics 365 Contact Center channels; task agents, autonomous agents, and prompt and response agents; Copilot Studio topics (including fallback), agent flows and prompt actions; when to use standard natural language processing, conversational language understanding or generative AI orchestration in Copilot Studio; AI components in a Power Apps canvas app; the Power Platform Well-Architected Framework for intelligent workloads; data processing for grounding; proposing Foundry Tools for a requirement; and code-first generative pages with an agent feed.
- Design extensibility: custom models in Microsoft Foundry, agents in Microsoft 365 Copilot, agent extensibility in Copilot Studio (including Model Context Protocol), Computer Use agents that automate tasks in apps and websites, agent behaviors such as reasoning and voice mode, and agents in Teams and SharePoint.
- Orchestrate prebuilt agents and apps: AI features in Dynamics 365 finance and supply chain apps and in customer experience and service apps, Microsoft 365 agents for business scenarios, Microsoft 365 Copilot for Sales and for Service, Power Platform AI features including AI hub, and extra knowledge sources for finance and operations agent chats and in-app help.
How to study it: this is the widest area, so build a scenario matrix. List ten business scenarios down the side (a sales follow-up, a contact center deflection, a month-end close task) and four columns across: Microsoft 365 Copilot agent, Copilot Studio agent, Microsoft Foundry agent, and a built-in Dynamics 365 Copilot feature. Fill in which you would choose and why. Then get hands-on in a trial or development environment: build one Copilot Studio agent with a topic, a fallback, a prompt action and one Model Context Protocol connection. Microsoft’s audience profile also expects you to know open agent protocols, naming Agent2Agent (A2A) and Model Context Protocol (MCP).
Skill area 3: Deploy AI-powered business solutions (40–45%)
What the published outline lists:
- Analyze, monitor and tune: the process and tools for monitoring agents, backlog and user feedback on AI and agent usage, AI-based tools for finding issues and tuning, agent performance metrics, and telemetry for performance and model tuning.
- Manage testing: the process and metrics for testing agents, validation criteria for custom AI models, Copilot prompt best practices, end-to-end test scenarios across several Dynamics 365 apps, and a strategy for creating test cases with Copilot.
- Design ALM: for data used in AI models and agents, for Copilot Studio agents, connectors and actions, for Microsoft Foundry Agent Service, for custom AI models, and for AI in Dynamics 365 finance, supply chain, customer experience and service apps.
- Responsible AI, security, governance, risk and compliance: security and governance for agents, model security, AI vulnerabilities and mitigations (including prompt manipulation), responsible AI reviews, data residency and movement compliance, access controls on grounding data and model tuning, and audit trails for changes to models and data.
How to study it: for each of the four groups, write down who owns it, which tool they use and what evidence proves it is working. For ALM, sketch how an agent and its connectors and actions move from development to test to production, who approves each step and how you roll back. For governance, practice explaining how you would stop prompt manipulation, restrict who can see grounding data and keep an audit trail of model changes. Our pieces on logging what your AI assistants do and lightweight AI governance cover the operating side of the same ideas.
Who AB-100 is for
Microsoft’s audience profile describes an accomplished solution architect who designs AI-driven business solutions with multiple Microsoft services. It expects knowledge of core Dynamics 365 products, Power Platform, Copilot Studio, Microsoft Foundry Tools and Foundry Models; experience designing agentic-first and multi-agent solutions; responsible AI practice aligned with the Microsoft Responsible AI Standard; securing AI models and data workflows; monitoring agents through telemetry; and the ability to run an ROI analysis of an AI solution.
In practice it fits:
- Solution and enterprise architects working on Microsoft business applications.
- Senior Dynamics 365 and Power Platform consultants who are moving into agent design.
- AI or digital transformation leads with a technical background who own architecture decisions.
It isn’t a starting point. If you use Copilot at work but don’t design solutions, Microsoft’s AB-730 (AI Business Professional) is the better match, and if you lead AI adoption without building, look at AB-731 (AI Transformation Leader). Our Microsoft AI certifications guide maps every option.
A 6-week AB-100 study plan
This plan assumes you already hold, or are close to, one of the qualifying associate certifications and can give AB-100 about 5 to 7 hours a week. If Copilot Studio or Dynamics 365 is new to you, add two weeks of hands-on time first.
| When | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Baseline | Read the study guide end to end. Take the free Practice Assessment cold and note your weakest area. Start the learning path Architect AI solutions for business productivity. |
| Week 2 | Plan (25–30%) | ROI and total cost of ownership, build versus buy versus extend, Cloud Adoption Framework AI adoption, prompt library guidelines and multi-agent design choices. Write your decision sheet. |
| Week 3 | Design, part 1 | Copilot Studio: topics and fallback, agent flows, prompt actions, generative orchestration, MCP extensibility and Computer Use. Build one small agent in a non-production environment. |
| Week 4 | Design, part 2 | Copilot features in the Dynamics 365 apps you know least, Microsoft 365 agents, Power Platform AI features and Foundry Tools. Finish your scenario matrix. |
| Week 5 | Deploy (40–45%) | Monitoring and telemetry, testing, ALM across Copilot Studio, Foundry Agent Service and Dynamics 365, then security, governance and responsible AI. |
| Week 6 | Review and book | Retake the Practice Assessment, reread the outline for your weakest area, try the exam sandbox, practice finding answers quickly on Microsoft Learn, then schedule the exam. |

AB-100 practice questions
HOW TO // AI doesn’t have AB-100 practice questions yet. Start with Microsoft’s free Practice Assessment: Microsoft says it is created by the same team that develops the certification exams and updated in step with them.
If your prerequisite route is AI-103, we do have free AI-103 practice questions written from Microsoft’s published outline. For every exam we cover, see AI Exam Prep, and use the AI certification index for verified facts on other AI exams.
Skip any site selling “real” AB-100 questions. Those are dumps, and they teach you answers instead of the architecture judgment this exam is built to test.
What exam day looks like
- Proctored by Pearson VUE, online or at a test center, and the exam may include interactive components.
- Microsoft Learn is open during the exam. On associate and expert exams you can open Learn in a split screen. No extra time is added, the clock keeps running, and Q&A, Practice Assessments and your profile are blocked. Use it to look things up, not to answer every question.
- Breaks: five minutes of break time are built in, the clock keeps running while you are away, and you can’t return to questions you saw before the break.
- Register with a personal Microsoft account. Microsoft warns that exam records tied to a work or school account are lost if you leave that organization.
- Retakes: 24 hours after a first fail, then 14 days between attempts, up to five attempts in 12 months, and each one is paid (Microsoft’s retake policy).
- Exam Replay: Microsoft’s offers page lists Exam Replay, a voucher plus one retake of the same exam, both taken within 12 months of purchase. The page doesn’t list a price.

Renewal: AB-100 is valid for one year
Microsoft’s credential expiration policy says role-based (associate and expert) certifications are valid for one year. To keep AB-100, pass the free renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn. It is online, unproctored and open book; the window opens six months before your expiry date; attempts are unlimited; and Microsoft says it takes about 45 minutes. If the certification lapses, you have to pass the exam again. Our guide to which AI certifications expire compares renewal rules across vendors, and the renewal tracker helps you keep dates straight.

Microsoft’s June 2026 roundup also lists a second AI expert certification, Multi-Agent AI Solutions Expert (AI-500), with general availability planned for September 2026. Our Microsoft AI certifications guide compares the two expert paths, and the best AI certifications ranked puts them next to other vendors’ exams.
Is AB-100 worth it?
If you already design Dynamics 365, Power Platform or Copilot Studio solutions, AB-100 is the Microsoft credential that matches the work: it sits at Microsoft’s expert level and tests design decisions rather than clicks. It is a poor first certification, though. You need an associate certification as well, so budget for two exams if you don’t hold one, and expect to renew every year. If your job is using AI rather than designing it, the $99 business certifications are a better fit. For a team-level view, see which AI certification your IT team should get first.

Frequently asked questions
What is the AB-100 exam?
AB-100 is the exam for Microsoft Certified: Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert, Microsoft's expert-level certification for architects who plan, design and deploy AI and agent solutions across Dynamics 365, Power Platform, Copilot Studio and Microsoft Foundry. It has three skill areas: Plan (25–30%), Design (25–30%) and Deploy (40–45%).
What are the prerequisites for AB-100?
To earn the certification you must pass AB-100 and hold one of 13 associate certifications listed on Microsoft's certification page, including AI-103, AI-300, AB-620, AB-410, PL-400 and several Dynamics 365 associates. The AB-100 exam page still shows an older list of 15 that includes MB-280 and PL-200, so go by the certification page.
How much does the AB-100 exam cost?
AB-100 costs $165 in the United States. Microsoft sets the price by the country or region where you test, for example £106 in the UK and ₹4,865 in India, and tax is extra.
Does passing AB-100 alone give me the certification?
No. Microsoft's certification page says that in addition to passing AB-100 you must earn at least one of the listed associate-level certifications. Until you hold both, you don't have the Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert certification.
What changes in AB-100 on October 14, 2026?
Microsoft updates the English AB-100 exam on October 14, 2026. The skill areas and weights stay the same, and three groups get minor changes: overall AI strategy, AI and agent design, and ALM for AI-powered solutions. Other languages follow about eight weeks later.
Is there a free AB-100 practice test?
Yes. Microsoft offers a free official Practice Assessment on the AB-100 exam page, plus an exam sandbox that shows the exam interface. HOW TO // AI does not have AB-100 practice questions yet.
How hard is the AB-100 exam?
It is an expert-level exam that assumes you already hold an associate certification and have real experience with Dynamics 365, Power Platform and Copilot Studio. The heaviest area, Deploy at 40–45%, tests decisions about monitoring, testing, ALM, security and governance rather than step-by-step configuration.
How long is the AB-100 certification valid?
One year. You renew it for free by passing an online, open-book renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn, which opens six months before your certification expires and allows unlimited attempts.
How long should I study for AB-100?
About six weeks at 5 to 7 hours a week is a reasonable target if you already hold a qualifying associate certification. Add two weeks of hands-on time if Copilot Studio or Dynamics 365 is new to you.
