Claude Free vs Pro: What You Actually Get

Claude Free vs Pro: What You Actually Get

Here’s the short answer: Claude Free and Claude Pro run the same default model, Sonnet 5. Pro doesn’t swap in a smarter default. It makes Claude available for longer, and it adds the power tools: Research, the larger Opus models, more Projects, and Claude Code. Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay for a year up front.

So the real question isn’t “is Pro better?” It’s “do I keep running out?” This guide lays out exactly what each plan includes, straight from Anthropic’s pricing and support pages as of September 2026, and helps you answer that honestly.

How Claude’s usage limits work (read this first)

Claude doesn’t give you a fixed number of messages. Both plans run on a usage budget that refills every five hours. How fast you spend it depends on how long your messages are, how long the conversation has grown, which files you’ve attached, which model you use, and which tools are switched on.

Pro adds a second layer: a weekly limit across all models that resets at a fixed day and time assigned to your account. You can see both in Settings > Usage. Everything counts toward the same budget, including Claude on the web, the desktop app, and Claude Code.

Anthropic doesn’t publish message counts for either plan, so ignore anyone who quotes one. What matters is your own experience: how often the “you’ve reached your limit” notice interrupts real work.

What the free plan already does well

Claude Free is not a stripped-down trial. You get the same Sonnet 5 model Pro users get by default, plus web search, file creation and code execution, memory across conversations, connectors to apps you use, Artifacts, voice mode, and up to five Projects for keeping reference files and instructions in one place.

For writing and editing, which is where Claude shines, Free is genuinely capable. Drafting a cover letter, tightening a report, or talking through a decision fits comfortably inside a free session. If you’re coming from ChatGPT, Free, Pro, and Max users can also import memory from another AI assistant, so Claude doesn’t start from zero. (More on why that matters in Why Your AI Forgets You.)

The limit is the limit. Long documents, big pasted threads, and back-and-forth editing sessions drain a free session fast, and then you wait for the five-hour window to reset.

What Pro adds, ranked by how much it matters

  1. More usage per session. This is the main thing you’re buying. If you work with Claude for an hour at a time, Pro is the difference between finishing and stopping halfway.
  2. Research. Claude runs a series of searches that build on each other and comes back with a cited report. It’s paid-only, it needs web search turned on, and it uses your limit faster than a normal chat.
  3. Opus models and bigger context. Pro adds Anthropic’s larger Opus models for harder problems. On paid plans, the newest models also support a context window of up to 1 million tokens in chat, which is room for very long documents.
  4. More Projects. Free caps you at five; Pro drops that cap. If you keep a project per client, course, or ongoing piece of work, five goes quickly.
  5. Claude Code. Anthropic’s coding tool is included with Pro and shares the same usage budget as chat.
  6. Hand-offs and the extras. Pro lets you hand Claude longer tasks and schedule recurring ones, use Claude inside Chrome and Microsoft 365, and try Claude Design, Slides, and Docs, which are still in beta.

Some of Claude’s most useful features are quiet ones, like Projects and memory. Our tour of Claude’s hidden features shows how to get more out of them on either plan.

The fine print: Fable isn’t part of Pro’s allowance

Anthropic’s high-end Fable models are available on Pro, but not inside your plan’s usage limits. Pro users run both Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 on pay-as-you-go usage credits. (A promotion that counted Fable 5 against Pro’s normal limits ended on July 19, 2026.) In other words, you pay extra per use, on top of the $20.

On Max plans, Fable is included: you can spend up to half of your weekly limit on it at no extra cost. For most people this doesn’t matter, because Sonnet 5 and Opus handle everyday work well. Just don’t subscribe to Pro expecting unlimited access to the biggest model.

Pro or Max?

Max is for people who work with Claude all day. It comes in two tiers: Max 5x at $100 a month and Max 20x at $200 a month, giving five or twenty times Pro’s per-session usage. Max is billed monthly only. Start with Pro. If you’re hitting Pro’s weekly limit regularly and the work pays for itself, then look at Max.

Monthly or annual?

Paying yearly brings Pro to $17 a month, billed as $200 up front. Compared with twelve months at $20, that saves $40 a year. The trade-off is commitment. Our advice: pay monthly for your first two months. If you’ve used Pro heavily in both, switch to annual. Anthropic says it doesn’t offer standing discounts or coupons, only occasional limited-time promotions.

The ceiling test for Claude

At HOW TO // AI we have one rule for paid AI: upgrade only when you keep hitting a limit on something you do every day. The full test is in Do You Actually Need to Pay for AI? Here’s what it looks like with Claude:

  • You hit the five-hour limit in the middle of real work more than once a week.
  • You need cited, multi-source research as part of your job.
  • You write code and want Claude Code in your terminal.
  • You’ve filled your five free Projects and keep deleting one to make room.
  • You regularly work with long documents that eat a free session in a few messages.

Two or more of those, most weeks? Pro will likely pay for itself. One, occasionally? Stay free and use the tips below.

Who should stay on Claude Free

  • You use Claude a few times a week to write, edit, or think something through.
  • Your conversations are short, and you rarely paste long documents.
  • You don’t need Research or Claude Code.
  • You already pay for ChatGPT or Gemini and use Claude as your writing specialist. See how the three compare in ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini.

Make any Claude plan last longer

Because long conversations cost more, the easiest way to stretch a free or Pro plan is to start fresh chats more often. Anthropic’s own advice points the same way: keep Project instructions short, remove files you’re not using, lower the effort setting for routine tasks, and turn off connected apps and web search when you don’t need them.

When a chat gets long, don’t keep going. Paste this at the end, then start a new chat with the summary:

This conversation is getting long, and I want to continue in a fresh chat without losing anything important.

Write a handoff brief I can paste into a new conversation. Include:
1. The goal I'm working toward, in one sentence.
2. Decisions we've already made, as a short bullet list.
3. The current version of the work (the latest draft, outline, or code), in full.
4. Open questions or next steps, in order.
5. My preferences you've picked up (tone, format, length, things to avoid).

Keep everything except item 3 under 200 words. Don't add commentary before or after the brief.

A new chat that starts from a tight brief uses far less of your budget than message 60 of an old one, and the answers often get sharper too.

How to cancel Claude Pro

If you subscribed on the web or in Claude Desktop, click your initials or name in the lower-left corner, choose Settings, go to Billing, and click Cancel. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, tap your initials, then Billing, then Manage subscription. That hands you off to Apple or Google Play.

Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid another charge. You keep Pro until the end of the period you’ve paid for. Anthropic’s cancellation guide has the details for each platform.

Try it now

Use Claude Free for one normal work week and notice every time the limit notice appears. Write down what you were doing. If it’s the same kind of task each time, and that task matters, try Pro for one month on monthly billing. If you’re comparing across assistants, our guides to ChatGPT Free vs Plus and Gemini Free vs Google AI Pro use the same test.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Claude Pro?

As of September 2026, Claude Pro is $20 a month in the US when billed monthly, or $17 a month with an annual subscription ($200 billed up front). Prices vary by region and taxes may apply. Check claude.com/pricing for current pricing.

How many messages do you get on Claude Free?

Anthropic doesn't publish a message count. The free plan has a session-based limit that resets every five hours, and how far it goes depends on message length, attachments, conversation length, and current demand. Claude tells you when you've hit the limit.

Does Claude Pro include Claude Code?

Yes. Claude Code is included with Pro and Max, but not with the free plan. Claude Code draws from the same usage budget as your chats on the web and desktop app.

Is Claude Max worth it over Pro?

Only if you regularly run out of Pro's weekly limit. Max costs $100 a month for 5x Pro's per-session usage or $200 a month for 20x, and it includes some use of the Fable models within the plan. Most people should start with Pro and upgrade only if the limit keeps stopping paid work.
