Why is ChatGPT so slow? Most of the time it’s one of a handful of causes that OpenAI lists in its own help center: an outage or a busy period, a very long chat, a browser extension, a VPN or work network, or stale browser data. This free wizard works out which one is most likely for you and walks you through OpenAI’s fixes, one step at a time.
It also handles the error messages, like “Something went wrong”, “A network error occurred” and a reply stuck on “Thinking…”.

Why is ChatGPT so slow? Fix it step by step
Tell us what's happening and where. The wizard puts OpenAI's own fixes in the best order for your situation and walks you through them one at a time, starting with whether ChatGPT itself is down.
1. What's happening?
4. Is it a long chat (dozens of messages or more)?
First, rule out an outage: OpenAI's status page shows incidents and slowdowns in real time.

How to use the fix-it wizard
- Pick what’s happening: slow replies, a stuck reply, an error message, a blank page or failing uploads.
- Say where you use ChatGPT (a browser or one of the apps) and on what connection.
- Tell it whether the chat is a long one.
- Try each step, then click That fixed it, or Still broken to move to the next one.
First: is ChatGPT down?
Before you change anything, open OpenAI’s status page. If there’s an incident, nothing on your side will fix it, and waiting is the answer. OpenAI also notes that ChatGPT can be slower at peak times of day. We link to the status page rather than copying it, so you always see OpenAI’s live information.
Common causes, and the fix for each
| Cause | Signs | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Outage or busy period | Slow for everyone, often at the same time of day | Check status.openai.com and wait |
| A long chat | Gets slower as the conversation grows | Ask for a summary, then start a new chat |
| Browser extensions | “Problem preparing your chat”, odd page errors | Test in an incognito window, then turn extensions off |
| VPN, proxy or secure DNS | Network errors, “unusual activity” | Turn them off and try again |
| Work or school network | Works on your phone’s hotspot but not office Wi-Fi | Ask IT to allow OpenAI’s domains and WebSocket traffic |
| Stale cache | Suddenly slow after working fine | Clear cookies and site data for ChatGPT |
| Slow connection | Slow on mobile data | Run a speed test or switch networks |
ChatGPT error messages, decoded
- “Something went wrong”: a general error that can be a temporary server problem or your own setup. Refresh or start a new chat first.
- “A network error occurred”: your device can’t hold a steady connection to OpenAI. VPNs and security filters are the usual suspects.
- “There was an error generating a response”: often a one-time failure. Click Regenerate.
- “There was a problem preparing your chat”: usually a browser extension or URL blocker.
- “Unusual activity detected”: traffic that looks automated, often from a VPN, a proxy or a shared account. Turn off the VPN and secure your account.
- Stuck on “Thinking…”: wait 30 to 60 seconds, then Stop and Regenerate, then try a new chat.
When to contact OpenAI support
If ChatGPT fails on every browser, device and network, the problem is likely on OpenAI’s side or with your account. OpenAI asks for a HAR file (a recording of the page’s network traffic), browser console errors with timestamps, the model you used and the conversation link. When you reach the last step, the wizard writes a short note listing everything you’ve already tried, ready to paste into your support request.

Frequently asked questions
Why is ChatGPT so slow today?
Check OpenAI's status page first, since an outage or busy period slows ChatGPT for everyone. If the status page is clear, the cause is usually on your side: a long chat, a browser extension, a VPN, stale browser data or a slow connection.
Does a long chat make ChatGPT slow?
It can. OpenAI's troubleshooting guide suggests starting a new chat when a conversation is long or has many turns. Ask the old chat for a short summary first and paste it into the new one so you keep your context.
What does "A network error occurred" mean in ChatGPT?
It means your device can't keep a reliable connection to OpenAI's servers. Turn off VPNs, proxies and security filters, then try another browser or network.
Does clearing my cache speed up ChatGPT?
Often, yes. OpenAI says that when ChatGPT suddenly slows down after working normally, outdated cache data is the most common cause, so clearing cache and cookies is worth trying early.
Is ChatGPT down right now?
We don't track that ourselves. OpenAI's live status page at status.openai.com shows current incidents and slowdowns.
