Who should pick which

Pick Claude if

  • You would rather pay yearly. Claude Pro is $17/month billed yearly, while ChatGPT Plus is $20/month and OpenAI doesn't offer yearly billing for it.
  • You want memory and voice without paying. Claude's free plan lists both as included; ChatGPT's free plan lists them as limited.
  • You build software. Claude Code comes with every paid Claude plan, and Max adds "$100/month in API credits to build on the Claude Platform".
  • You want to turn a chat into a document or slides for free. Claude's free plan lists "Create Artifacts, plus Claude Design, Slides, Docs".

Pick ChatGPT if

  • You want to make images. Every ChatGPT plan includes image creation (limited on Free). Claude's plans don't list it.
  • You want a low-cost paid plan. The cheapest paid ChatGPT plan is ChatGPT Go at $8/month; Claude's is Claude Pro at $20/month.
  • You chat a lot without paying. OpenAI says: "Free users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. File uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and other tools have separate usage limits." Anthropic says: "Every plan has usage limits that reset on a rolling five-hour session window, and paid plans add weekly limits on top."
  • You want deep research or an agent on a free plan. ChatGPT Free includes limited access to both; Claude Free doesn't include them.

For company data, either team plan works. Claude Team (Standard seat) at $25/user/month and ChatGPT Business (Standard seat) at $25/user/month both keep your content out of model training by default.

How to use the Claude vs ChatGPT picker

  1. Pick up to three things you’ll use it for most, like writing, coding or making images.
  2. Set what you’d spend each month, or pick “My company pays” for team plans.
  3. Answer the last four questions about billing, how much you’ll use it, your work apps and private data. The result updates as you click.
  4. Read the reasons, then check the plan table. It jumps to the plans in your budget.
  5. Close call? Unlock the try-both test kit and run the same prompts in both free plans.

Is Claude better than ChatGPT?

Neither is better for everyone, and no plan page can tell you which one writes or reasons better for your work. What you can compare is what each plan includes. On Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s own pages, the clearest differences are:

  • Images: ChatGPT’s plans include image creation (limited on Free). Claude’s plans don’t list it.
  • The price ladder: ChatGPT has a low-cost Go plan between Free and Plus. Claude goes from Free straight to Pro.
  • Yearly billing: Claude Pro has a cheaper yearly price. OpenAI doesn’t offer yearly billing for Go, Plus or Pro.
  • Free plan limits: OpenAI says Free and Go include unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse safeguards. Anthropic says every Claude plan has usage limits that reset on a rolling five-hour window.
  • Free plan features: Claude Free includes memory and voice mode (a beta). ChatGPT Free includes limited deep research and agent access, which Claude Free doesn’t.
  • Coding: Claude Code comes with every paid Claude plan. ChatGPT includes Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, with limited access on Free.

For writing quality and reasoning, test both on your own work. The picker’s test kit gives you prompts to do that in about ten minutes.

Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus

The two main paid plans cost the same per month in the US ($20 as of October 18, 2026). Both add deep research, agents, scheduled tasks, app connectors and a coding agent. The two differences that matter most: ChatGPT Plus makes images, and Claude Pro costs less if you pay for a year up front. Heavier users can step up to Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro, which both have tiers around $100 and $200 a month; ChatGPT also has a higher Pro tier above that.

Which free plan is better: Claude Free or ChatGPT Free?

Both free plans are genuinely useful. ChatGPT Free suits you if you chat a lot and want to try deep research, images or an agent without paying; OpenAI says ads may appear on Free and Go. Claude Free suits you if you want memory across chats, voice mode and the ability to turn a chat into documents and slides. Nothing stops you from using both free plans side by side.

Privacy: do Claude and ChatGPT train on your chats?

On personal plans, both companies use your chats to improve their models unless you opt out in settings. Their team plans, Claude Team and ChatGPT Business, don’t train on your business data by default. If you paste client or company information, use a team plan or check your company’s AI policy first.
