AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) and AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) look like twins on paper. Both are Foundational-level exams with 65 questions in 90 minutes, both cost $100, and both need a scaled score of 700 to pass. What they test is completely different. Cloud Practitioner is about AWS itself: services, security, and billing. AI Practitioner is about AI, machine learning, and generative AI on AWS.
The short answer: if your goal is an AI credential, take AI Practitioner first. You don’t need Cloud Practitioner before it. Take Cloud Practitioner first if you’re brand new to cloud or headed toward a general AWS career. The rest of this guide shows you how to tell which camp you’re in, and how each one sets you up for an associate-level cert.
The quick answer
- Take AI Practitioner first if you want to show AI skills at work, you already understand basic cloud ideas, or you plan to go on to the Machine Learning Engineer – Associate.
- Take Cloud Practitioner first if terms like “region,” “IAM,” and “shared responsibility model” are new to you, or your next goal is Solutions Architect – Associate.
- Take both if your job sits between the business and a cloud team. Once you pass one, AWS gives you a 50% discount voucher you can use on another exam, so the second one can cost half.
AWS itself doesn’t push an order. Its AI Practitioner page says to take the exam that best fits your interests and needs, and notes you can earn both.
CLF-C02 vs AIF-C01 side by side

Neither exam has a newer version announced as of September 2026. The only scheduled changes are the Italian and German retirements above. AWS did refresh the AI Practitioner exam guide in April 2026 while keeping the AIF-C01 code, which matters for your study materials (more on that below).
What each exam actually covers
Cloud Practitioner: how AWS works
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Cloud Concepts | 24% |
| Security and Compliance | 30% |
| Cloud Technology and Services | 34% |
| Billing, Pricing, and Support | 12% |
This is a broad survey of AWS. You’ll explain the value of the cloud, the shared responsibility model, the Well-Architected Framework, and which core compute, storage, networking, and database services fit common use cases. AWS’s own comparison notes that the Cloud Practitioner outline contains only one task statement related to AI.
AI Practitioner: how AI works on AWS
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Fundamentals of AI and ML | 20% |
| Fundamentals of GenAI | 24% |
| Applications of Foundation Models | 28% |
| Guidelines for Responsible AI | 14% |
| Security, Compliance, and Governance for AI Solutions | 14% |
Here the whole outline is AI. You’ll pick the right kind of AI for a business problem, explain foundation models, prompting, RAG, and fine-tuning tradeoffs, and cover responsible AI and security. The April 2026 update (exam guide version 1.1) added agentic AI and Model Context Protocol (MCP), context engineering, token-based pricing, hallucination detection and grounding, and services such as Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, Kiro, and Strands Agents.
There’s overlap, though. The AI Practitioner guide expects familiarity with core services like Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, and AWS Lambda, plus the shared responsibility model, IAM, and AWS pricing models. That’s Cloud Practitioner territory, which is why the order question comes up at all.
Which should you take first?
Take AI Practitioner first if…
- Your manager asked for “AI skills,” not “AWS skills.” Product managers, marketers, analysts, and consultants usually fall here.
- You already know what S3, EC2, and IAM are, even roughly.
- You’re aiming at the ML Engineer – Associate later. AWS names it (along with Data Engineer – Associate) as a next step for people pursuing data, AI, and machine learning careers.
Take Cloud Practitioner first if…
- You’ve never logged in to the AWS console and cloud vocabulary is new.
- Your work touches AWS bills, contracts, or security reviews: sales, finance, procurement, or project management on cloud projects.
- Your next goal is Solutions Architect – Associate, Developer – Associate, or another infrastructure-focused cert.
Take both if…
You sit between business and technical teams and want to speak both languages. Take Cloud Practitioner first if the AWS basics are shaky, since the security and pricing material carries straight into AI Practitioner’s governance domain. Then use your 50% voucher on the second exam. If you’re weighing AI Practitioner against a different vendor’s entry cert instead, see our AWS AI Practitioner vs Azure AI Fundamentals comparison.
Can you skip Cloud Practitioner?
Yes. Neither the AI Practitioner page nor the ML Engineer – Associate page lists Cloud Practitioner as a requirement. What AWS does suggest is knowledge, not a badge: its AI Practitioner FAQ says that if you’re new to IT and the AWS Cloud, start with the AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials course or AWS Technical Essentials. People who already hold Cloud Practitioner or an Associate-level certification can skip those foundational courses.
So the honest version is: you can skip the exam, but not the concepts. If you can explain in a sentence what IAM, a region, and the shared responsibility model are, go straight to AI Practitioner. If you can’t, spend a week on the free course first. You’ll be learning that material either way.
How they stack toward associate certs
AWS’s own “what’s next” advice splits along the same line as the two exams:
- After Cloud Practitioner: Solutions Architect – Associate, Developer – Associate, or the operations associate (now the CloudOps Engineer – Associate).
- After AI Practitioner: Solutions Architect – Associate if you’re moving into a cloud career; Data Engineer – Associate or Machine Learning Engineer – Associate for data, AI, and ML roles.
Renewal rules add a twist worth planning around. Passing any Associate or Professional exam renews Cloud Practitioner. AI Practitioner is pickier: only the latest AI Practitioner exam, the latest ML Engineer – Associate, or the Generative AI Developer – Professional renews it. Passing Solutions Architect – Associate won’t. Check AWS’s recertification page before you count on a renewal.
If ML Engineer – Associate is your destination, know that it’s mid-change. The last day to take MLA-C01 in English was September 28, 2026, and AWS’s certification blog dates the standard MLA-C02 to January 14, 2027, though the exam page still lists GA as TBD. Our MLA-C02 exam guide covers what’s different and which version to aim for.
One more option appeared in September 2026: the AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01), a Business-category exam in beta at the time of writing. It’s aimed at leaders deciding which AI projects to fund and govern, and AWS says it doesn’t test knowledge of AWS AI services. If that’s you, it may fit better than either Practitioner exam.
Study tips for each exam
For AI Practitioner, study from materials that match the current exam guide. Anything written before the April 2026 refresh will miss agentic AI, MCP, and the newer Bedrock services. Our AI Practitioner study guide and cheat sheet and our free AI Practitioner practice questions are a good place to start. For Cloud Practitioner, AWS’s own Exam Prep Plan on AWS Skill Builder and its Official Practice Question Set are the standard route; both exam pages point to them.

Give me a week-by-week study plan for the first exam that fits my hours.Keep it under 400 words. Don't state exam prices or rules; I'll confirm those on AWS's site.Common mistakes
- Thinking Cloud Practitioner is required. It isn’t. It’s one of two on-ramps.
- Studying old AI Practitioner material. The exam code didn’t change in 2026, but the guide did. Check that your course covers agents and MCP.
- Paying full price twice. Use the 50% voucher from your first certification on the second exam.
- Assuming any associate cert renews AI Practitioner. Only specific exams do. Cloud Practitioner is the one that renews broadly.
- Booking in Italian or German without checking the date. AI Practitioner retired those languages after October 15, 2026, and Cloud Practitioner retires them after December 31, 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need AWS Cloud Practitioner before AI Practitioner?
No. AWS doesn't list Cloud Practitioner as a requirement for AI Practitioner. If you're new to IT and AWS, AWS suggests its free Cloud Practitioner Essentials course first, which covers the cloud basics without the exam.
Which is harder, Cloud Practitioner or AI Practitioner?
Both are Foundational exams with 65 questions, 90 minutes, and a passing score of 700. AI Practitioner uses more specialized vocabulary, like foundation models, RAG, embeddings, and evaluation metrics, and can include ordering and matching questions. Cloud Practitioner covers a wider spread of AWS services, security, and billing.
Can I get a discount if I take both exams?
Yes. After you earn an AWS certification, AWS gives you a 50% discount voucher in your AWS Certification Account that you can apply to recertification or any other exam. Both exams list at $100, so the second can cost $50.
Does passing an associate exam renew my AI Practitioner certification?
Only specific ones. AI Practitioner renews if you pass its latest version, the latest ML Engineer – Associate exam, or the Generative AI Developer – Professional exam. Cloud Practitioner is broader: any Associate or Professional exam renews it.
