NVIDIA AI Models Associate Exam Drops Its Hands-On Lab

A young AI developer sweeps a tangle of cables and a toolbox off his desk into a bin while a robot assistant hands him a blank multiple-choice

NVIDIA’s exam page for the NVIDIA-Certified Associate: AI Models and Application Development (NCA-AMAD) now says “Hands-on lab : No”. When we first recorded the exam on October 17, 2026, the same page said “Hands-on lab : Yes”. On November 4, 2026 the lab is gone from the format, and NVIDIA has not posted an explanation. Everything else on the page is unchanged: 50 to 60 multiple-choice questions, a 1-hour time limit, 125 USD, pass/fail scoring, “Multiple” languages and two-year validity.

Who this affects

  • Candidates preparing for NCA-AMAD: you are now studying for a multiple-choice exam only, the same format as NVIDIA’s other associate exams (NCA-AIIO, NCA-GENL, NCA-GENM and NCA-ADS).
  • People choosing between NVIDIA associate exams: the lab was the one format difference that set NCA-AMAD apart. Choose on content now: NCA-AMAD covers model customization, inference, agentic AI and NVIDIA AI Enterprise; NCA-GENL covers generative AI and large language models; NCA-AIIO covers AI infrastructure and operations.
  • Anyone who already passed: nothing changes. The credential stays valid for two years.

What to do now

  • Prepare for multiple choice, but keep the hands-on practice. NVIDIA aims the exam at entry-level AI developers who customize, serve and consume models as applications. Questions written for that audience still reward people who have done the work.
  • Plan on 60 minutes for 50 to 60 questions. That is about one minute per question, with no lab time to budget.
  • Re-check the page before you book. This page has changed once already. The exam is new, so the format may still be settling.
  • Ask NVIDIA directly. NVIDIA is holding a certification roadmap webinar on November 19, 2026 that covers this exam, with a live Q&A.

NCA-AMAD is listed in our AI Certification Requirements Index. If you are weighing it against NVIDIA’s other entry exams, see NCA-AIIO vs NCA-GENL and our generative AI certifications comparison.
