The short answer

  • Pick Cursor if you want AI built into a full editor, with suggestions as you type, a free plan to start, and models from several labs in one place.
  • Pick Claude Code if you live in the terminal, mostly want Claude models, already pay for a Claude plan, or want an agent that drops into scripts and CI.
  • Use both if you like Cursor’s editor but want Claude Code for bigger jobs: Claude Code’s VS Code extension also installs in Cursor.

The biggest pricing difference

Cursor is now sold as part of The X Subscription, one plan for Grok, Cursor and X. Its included weekly usage pool covers Cursor’s own models (Grok and Composer). Claude, GPT and Gemini models aren’t in that pool: they aren’t available on Free or Plus, and on Premium and up they’re billed at the model maker’s API list price from prepaid credit, on top of your plan.

Claude Code works the other way around. It only runs Claude models, and they’re included in your Claude plan’s usage, which resets on a rolling five-hour window with weekly limits on paid plans. If Claude is the model you want, that difference matters more than the sticker price.

Does your programming language matter?

Not much. Neither tool’s docs limit which languages you can use, so your stack rarely changes the pick. What matters more is where you work (editor or terminal), which models you want, and which plan you already pay for. Both tools read an AGENTS.md file for project instructions, so you can keep one set of rules if you use both.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Code better than Cursor?

Neither is better for everyone. Cursor suits people who want AI inside a full editor with as-you-type suggestions; Claude Code suits terminal users who mostly want Claude models and already pay for a Claude plan. The picker above weighs your answers.

Can I use Claude Code inside Cursor?

Yes. Claude Code's VS Code extension also installs in Cursor, so you can keep Cursor's editor and run Claude Code in the same window.

Can I use Claude models in Cursor?

Yes, on Premium ($30 a month) and higher. Claude models aren't part of Cursor's included usage pool, so they're billed at Anthropic's API list price from prepaid credit. Free and Plus don't include them.

Is there a free version of Claude Code?

No. Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) or a Claude Console account billed for API usage. Cursor has a free plan with limited agent and Chat requests.

Which is cheaper, Cursor or Claude Code?

Cursor's paid plans start lower ($8 for Plus), but Plus only includes Cursor's own models. Claude Code starts with Claude Pro at $20 a month, or $17 billed yearly, and includes Claude models in your plan's usage.
