Is there a Claude student discount?
Not for individuals. Anthropic’s pricing page lists no student price for Claude Pro. Students get Claude through Claude for Education, a plan universities buy for their students, faculty and staff, so ask your school whether it has one. Without it, the cheapest paid option is Claude Pro at $17 a month billed yearly ($200 up front) or $20 month to month.
How student verification works
ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity use SheerID, a verification service, to confirm you’re enrolled. Depending on your school, it may check records automatically, ask you to sign in through your school, or ask for a document. Google needs a valid school email, while OpenAI says your ChatGPT account doesn’t have to use your school email. Microsoft accepts a school email or proof like a dated student ID or class schedule, and GitHub runs its own check through GitHub Education.
Watch out for these catches
- A payment method is required. The free ChatGPT and Google offers both ask for one and start charging when the free period ends unless you cancel.
- App store billing. OpenAI’s offer can’t be applied to a ChatGPT subscription billed through the App Store or Google Play.
- Personal accounts only. Google’s and Microsoft’s offers need a personal account, not one your school issued.
- Re-verification. Google and Microsoft re-check that you’re still a student about once a year, and GitHub checks every month.
- One account, once. OpenAI’s offer can be redeemed once and can’t be moved to another ChatGPT account.
