How to use the error decoder
- Paste the error message, or pick it from the list. A few key words like “network error” or “429” are enough.
- Narrow it to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or the developer APIs when the same code shows up in more than one place.
- Work through the fix steps in order. They start with the quickest.
- Check the official status page before you change any settings.
How to fix “Error in message stream” in ChatGPT
OpenAI’s help center doesn’t have an article for this exact message (we checked on October 18, 2026). The closest official guidance is OpenAI’s sequence for replies that fail or hang:
- Wait 30 to 60 seconds to see if the response completes.
- Click Stop generating, then Regenerate.
- Start a new chat and resend your prompt, especially if the chat is long.
- Hard refresh the page (Cmd or Ctrl + Shift + R), or sign out and back in.
- Try a private window with extensions off, and turn off VPNs, proxies or secure DNS.
- Check status.openai.com for an incident.
If it still fails on every browser, device and network, OpenAI asks you to save a HAR file and your browser’s console errors with timestamps, then contact Support.
Is it you or them?
The decoder labels every error, because the fix depends on where the problem is.
| Label | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Usually their side | The service is busy or having an incident | Check the status page, wait and retry |
| Usually your setup | Your browser, VPN, extensions or network | Work through the fix steps |
| Could be either side | The message alone can’t tell you | Rule out an outage first, then your browser |
| A plan or usage limit | You’ve used your allowance | Wait for the reset, or upgrade |
One trap to know about: Claude’s “capacity constraints” message won’t show up on Claude’s status page. Anthropic says capacity limits are normal load management, not outages, so the fix is simply to try again in a few minutes.
Common AI error messages at a glance
| Message | App | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Something went wrong | ChatGPT | Refresh or start a new chat, then check status.openai.com |
| A network error occurred | ChatGPT | Turn off VPNs, proxies and security filters |
| There was an error generating a response | ChatGPT | Click Regenerate |
| Due to unexpected capacity constraints, Claude is unable to respond | Claude | Try again in a few minutes |
| 5-hour limit reached | Claude | Wait for the reset time, or turn on usage credits on a paid plan |
| 529 overloaded_error | Claude API and Claude Code | Retry later. It doesn’t count against your quota |
| 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED | Gemini API | Back off and retry. Daily quotas reset at midnight Pacific time |

Frequently asked questions
What does "Error in message stream" mean in ChatGPT?
It means the reply stopped while it was streaming to your screen. OpenAI has no help article for this exact message, so use its steps for failed or stuck replies: wait a minute, click Regenerate, start a new chat, refresh, and check status.openai.com.
Is ChatGPT down, or is it just me?
Check status.openai.com first. If there's no incident, OpenAI's steps point to your side: try a private window with extensions off, turn off VPNs or secure DNS, and switch networks or devices.
What does "Claude is unable to respond due to capacity constraints" mean?
Claude is under heavy demand across all users. Anthropic says this is not an outage and won't appear on its status page, so try again in a few minutes.
What does "Claude reached its tool-use limit for this turn" mean?
Claude paused after using many tools in a single reply. It isn't one of the usage limit messages Anthropic lists, which mention a 5-hour or weekly limit. Ask Claude to continue in the same chat, or split the task into smaller steps.
Does a 529 overloaded error count against my Claude usage?
No. Anthropic's Claude Code docs say a 529 is not your usage limit and doesn't count against your quota. Try again in a few minutes, or switch to another model.
