The short version
- Saysmith collects no data. Nothing you say or paste reaches us.
- Your voice is turned into text on your Mac, and the audio is never saved or sent.
- The app has no network access at all.
- No account, no analytics, no tracking.
Your voice
Saysmith captures audio only while you hold the push-to-talk key. Apple's on-device speech model (SpeechAnalyzer) transcribes it on your Mac. The audio is never saved to disk and never sent anywhere.
AI cleanup
Cleanup and rewrites (Clean, Email, List, Vent and Prompt) run on your Mac with Apple's on-device model (Apple Intelligence Foundation Models). There is no cloud AI, no API key and no server of ours involved.
No network access
Saysmith is built without the macOS network permission, so it cannot make network calls. That means no analytics, no tracking, no crash-reporting SDK and no update checks. Updates come from the Mac App Store.
What stays on your Mac
Saysmith keeps two things in its private app container, for you only:
- Dictation history: what you said and what was pasted. You can turn it off and delete it in Settings.
- Monthly Um-meter counts: numbers only, no text.
Both are excluded from backups, and deleting the app deletes them.
Purchases
Apple handles purchases through the App Store. We receive no personal or payment information.
Links to our website
Optional links in the app (the newsletter and our free AI tools) open howtoai.com in your browser, and only when you click them. The app itself sends nothing. On the website, our site-wide privacy policy applies.
Crash reports
If you choose to share crash reports with app developers in your Mac's settings, Apple may pass us anonymous crash reports. Saysmith adds nothing to them.
Permissions
- Microphone: to hear you while the key is held.
- Accessibility: to paste into the app you're using and to notice the right ⌥ key. Without it, Saysmith copies the text and you paste it yourself.
