What these platforms say about scams

  • Outlier: Outlier's rules ban buying or selling accounts and pretending to be Outlier staff, and pay must go to an account in your own name. source
  • DataAnnotation: DataAnnotation says it will never ask you for money, and the only way to apply is its official sign-up flow. source
  • DataAnnotation: It warns that people use its name to commit fraud: do not engage with direct messages from outside its official channels. source
  • Mercor: Mercor says it never asks for any payment or fee, and messages from any other domain are not official. source
  • Mercor: Enter personal or banking details only on its own portal, work.mercor.com. source
  • Handshake AI: Handshake says it never asks for sensitive information by text, email, phone, social media or WhatsApp; ID and payment details go only through its partners Persona and Stripe. source
  • Turing: Turing's own advice: real hiring managers email from the company's domain, and be wary of any job that asks you to pay to work. source
  • Appen (CrowdGen): Appen says it never asks you to pay to apply or start, never sends a check in advance, and official emails come only from its own domain. source
  • TELUS Digital AI Community: TELUS Digital says it never asks for payment or banking information during the application, and its recruiters use only its own email domains. source
  • Mindrift (Toloka): Mindrift says the only way to work with it is through an account on its platform, and joining is always free. source
  • Prolific: Prolific says its messages never ask for login details, ID documents or personal information, and impostors pose as its staff on Telegram and WhatsApp. source

AI training jobs vs. regular AI jobs

Both can be remote, and both can be contract work. The difference is who you work for and what you do all day.

  • Regular AI jobs are staff roles at AI companies like Anthropic, OpenAI or ElevenLabs: engineering, sales, support, policy. You apply with a resume and interview over several weeks, and most roles are full-time with a salary. Our remote AI jobs board lists them.
  • AI training jobs are paid by the hour through platforms like Outlier, DataAnnotation, Mercor and Alignerr, which supply people to the labs that build AI models. You take an online test instead of an interview, choose your own hours, and work project by project.

That is why this page compares the platforms first. The real choice is which platform to join; after that, you pick projects inside it.

What the work looks like

  • Rating answers: compare two chatbot replies and explain which is better and why.
  • Writing: write prompts, and the ideal answer a model should give.
  • Checking: fact-check answers, or test and fix code a model wrote.
  • Red-teaming: try to get a model to break its safety rules, so the lab can fix it.
  • Expert reviews: doctors, lawyers, accountants and scientists grade answers in their own field. This pays the most.
  • Language and voice work: translation, transcription and recordings in your native language.

Who gets hired, and what it pays

General writing and rating work is open to strong writers, often with a degree, and pays the least. Platforms pay much more for coding, a professional license, or a master’s or PhD in a technical field. Each platform card above quotes pay from the platform’s own site. For example, DataAnnotation lists general projects at $25 to $50+ an hour and coding at $40 to $150+, and Mercor says its average contracted rate is $110 an hour.

How to get started

  • Join two or three platforms that match your background. Projects start and stop without much notice, so one platform is rarely steady work on its own.
  • Treat the assessment like a job interview. Most platforms decide from one test, and some don’t let you retake it.
  • Apply only on the platform’s own site. Every “Official site” button above goes there.
  • Expect gaps between projects, and don’t count on a fixed income in the first few months.
  • Keep records for taxes. Most platforms pay you as an independent contractor, so nothing is held back for tax.
  • Get new roles by email. The sign-up at the top of this page sends new AI training roles every Monday.

How to spot a fake AI training job

“AI training” is one of the most common lures in job scams right now. A real platform:

  • never asks you to pay for training or equipment, or to deposit money to “unlock” tasks;
  • doesn’t hire you over WhatsApp, Telegram or a text from a stranger;
  • pays you through its own dashboard, never with a check you deposit and send money back from.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI training job?

Paid work that helps improve AI models: rating and writing chatbot answers, checking facts and code, or reviewing answers in your own field. Most of it is remote, hourly contract work through platforms such as Outlier, DataAnnotation, Mercor and Alignerr.

Are AI training jobs the same as remote AI jobs?

They overlap, but they aren't the same. Remote AI jobs are usually salaried staff roles at AI companies, hired through interviews. AI training jobs are hourly contract work through training platforms, usually hired through an online test, with hours you choose.

How much do AI training jobs pay?

It depends on your skills and the platform. General writing and rating work pays the least; coding, licensed professions and advanced degrees pay the most. The rates on this page are quoted from each platform's own site, for example $25 to $50+ an hour for DataAnnotation's general projects.

Can I do AI training work part-time?

Yes. Most platforms let you choose your hours and many have no minimum, though some projects ask for 10 to 20 or more hours a week. Work comes project by project, so hours can drop when a project ends.

Do I need a degree or coding skills?

Not always. Many platforms want a degree for general work, and the best-paid projects need coding, a professional license or an advanced degree. Some work needs no experience, such as Prolific studies and many TELUS Digital rater roles.

Are AI training jobs legit?

The platforms on this page are real companies that pay their workers, but scammers copy their names. A real platform never charges you to start, and you apply only on its own site. If an offer came by text or a chat app, check it with our free job scam checker first.
