Who it’s for
AI trainer jobs on platforms like Outlier, DataAnnotation and Mercor pay people to rate, write and check AI answers. If you want to become an AI trainer, getting in is the hard part: some tests allow one attempt, and some platforms never tell you why you weren’t accepted. This playbook shows you how screening works, so you can prepare. The honest promise: better odds, not a sure thing.
Built for
- Strong writers with a degree or equivalent experience who want flexible, remote contract work
- Coders who want to review and test AI-written code
- Credentialed experts: STEM graduates, clinicians, and licensed professionals in law, finance or medicine
- Language specialists and native speakers of languages besides English
- Students and new grads who want to understand the screenings before they apply
- Anyone who applied and heard nothing, and wants to know which step stopped them
Not for you if you want
- A shortcut. There isn’t one. The playbook takes a weekend of real work.
- Real test questions or answers. We don’t sell them, and using them can cost you your account.
- Steady income or a full-time job. Work comes project by project, and quiet weeks happen.
- To use a VPN, a second account or someone else’s identity. Outlier’s rules, for one, forbid all three, and we won’t help.

- Prepare for assessments and AI interviews without cheating, using the retake rules platforms publish. (Module 3)

A practice task with model answers
Kit: the “before you apply” checklistTry a sample task
Every practice task in the playbook is ours, labeled as ours, and not taken from or based on any platform’s real test. This one is from Module 1, trimmed to three of its six people.
HOW TO // AI practice task (our own)
Task 1B: Which gate is this?
The playbook names five gates between you and paid work: eligibility, profile review, the skills screen, ID check and project qualification. Name the gate each person is stuck at, and the fix.
- Priya’s resume was written for marketing jobs, and its top skill line says “AI enthusiast.”
- Tom rushes through a one-attempt written assessment in 20 minutes so he’ll look fast.
- Mia retakes her Mercor interview twice because she didn’t like her first answers.
Trimmed from the playbook
Model answer
- Gate 2, profile review. “AI enthusiast” tells a screener nothing. Fix: evidence bullets that show her writing, research and subject knowledge (Module 2).
- Gate 3, the skills screen. DataAnnotation, for one, says it reviews its starter assessment for thoroughness and accuracy, not speed (its FAQ). Fix: take the time the task needs, read the instructions twice, and check every answer.
- Gate 3 again. Mercor limits official interview retakes, asks you to save them for technical problems, and shows hiring managers how many you used (its guide). Fix: rehearse with Mercor’s free practice interview, then sit the official one once.
The playbook has 30 more, from rubric writing to code review.
Why you can trust it
- 13 platforms, by name: Outlier, DataAnnotation, Mercor, Alignerr, Handshake AI, Turing, Meridial, Appen (CrowdGen), the TELUS Digital AI Community, Mindrift, Prolific, the Human Frontier Collective and Remotasks.
- Every fact from the source. Each platform fact comes from that platform’s own pages, with a link and the date we checked it. The cover carries the version date.
- Pay in their words, or not at all. We quote pay only as each platform states it, with a link, and we make no income claims.
- No real test content, ever. We never share, rebuild or hint at any platform’s real assessment questions or answers.
- Check our work for free. Our AI training jobs hub compares all 13 platforms side by side, with open roles updated hourly, and our “Is it legit?” guides cover Outlier, DataAnnotation and Mercor.
- Independent. HOW TO // AI isn’t affiliated with any platform in the playbook. One link inside is our Mercor referral link, and it’s labeled as one: if you apply through it, Mercor may pay us a bonus. It costs you nothing.

Frequently asked questions
Does The AI Trainer Playbook include real assessment questions or answers?
No. We never share, rebuild or hint at any platform's real test content. Platforms protect it, some tests allow only one attempt, and using leaked material can cost you your account. Every practice task in the playbook is our own, written to teach the skills screenings look for, and labeled as ours.
Will The AI Trainer Playbook get me accepted?
We can't promise that, and nobody honestly can. Acceptance depends on your background, where you live and what each platform needs at the time. The playbook improves your odds by showing how screening works and helping you practice first. It doesn't promise acceptance, hours or income: work on these platforms comes project by project.
Which platforms does it cover?
For Outlier, DataAnnotation, Mercor and 10 more platforms. Not affiliated with any of them. All 13: Outlier, DataAnnotation, Mercor, Alignerr, Handshake AI, Turing, Meridial, Appen (CrowdGen), the TELUS Digital AI Community, Mindrift, Prolific, the Human Frontier Collective and Remotasks.
How does the AI feedback in the practice lab work?
Do any of the 12 timed lab tasks online, submit your answer, and get a score against that task's scoring guide, two things you did well and the two most important fixes. It's practice feedback from AI to help you improve, not a prediction of any platform's decision.
Do I need a degree, or to know how to code?
You don't need to code unless you want coding work. Writers, credentialed experts, language specialists and students each have their own tracks, and coders get an extra lesson and drill on reviewing AI-written code. Degree rules vary by platform and track: Mindrift says its open tasks have no education requirements, while expert tracks ask for advanced degrees or licenses. Module 1 maps who each platform says it wants, in its own words.
Can I use it outside the US?
Yes. It's written in plain US English for readers anywhere, but each platform sets its own country rules. The fit map in Module 1 shows where each one says it hires: DataAnnotation says it's available in 50+ countries, Turing says its network spans 140+ countries, and Handshake AI is for people based in the US, with international access by invitation. The tax lesson covers US basics, so check your local rules too.
What format is it, and what can I read it on?
The playbook is a PDF you can read on any phone, tablet or computer. The kit comes as Word and Excel files, which also open in Google Docs and Sheets, plus printable PDF versions. Your download link arrives by email right after checkout.
How do updates work?
Platforms change their rules, screening steps and pay often. When we re-check and update the playbook, you get the new version free for 12 months after you buy, sent to the email you used at checkout. Every version carries its date on the cover.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If the playbook isn't useful to you, ask within 14 days of purchase through our contact page with your order number, and we'll refund you in full, no questions asked. Details are in our refund policy.
