A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside a customer’s business to build AI systems that solve that customer’s problems, and stays until those systems run in production. Most engineers build one product for many customers. An FDE builds for one customer at a time, then feeds what they learn back to the product team.
OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Palantir and SpaceXSI all have FDE jobs open. As of October 2026, the US pay ranges printed on the FDE postings we read run from $135,000 to $325,000 a year, with equity or bonuses on top at some employers. Every fact below comes from each company’s own careers pages, blogs or program pages, checked on October 23, 2026.
What does a forward deployed engineer do?
The job postings describe the same loop, from first meeting to handover:
- Find the problem worth solving. OpenAI’s FDEs “own discovery, technical scoping, system design, build, and production rollout.” SpaceXSI’s posting asks FDEs to “find the real bottleneck and the use case worth building.”
- Build inside the customer’s systems. Anthropic’s FDEs build “production applications with Claude models” within customer systems, and deliver pieces like MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills.
- Get it into production. SpaceXSI wants “a first version live in days,” hardened over the following weeks. Google’s FDEs build evaluation pipelines so AI systems meet requirements for accuracy, safety and latency.
- Hand it over. SpaceXSI tells FDEs to “Leave the customer team able to run what you built.”
- Report back. OpenAI’s FDEs share field feedback so its research and product teams learn “where the models succeed and where they can improve.”
Expect to travel. OpenAI’s San Francisco FDE posting says travel of up to 50% is required, and Anthropic’s London posting says 25 to 50%. On Palantir’s blog, one of its engineers described a typical week as “a couple of days working at the customer premises,” with code reviews and planning back at the office.
Where the title came from
Palantir claims it. Its current postings call the job “The Original Forward Deployed Software Engineer” and say, “We pioneered this unique position, embedding talented engineers directly with our customers.” A 2019 post on Palantir’s blog explains that the company calls these engineers “Deltas,” a throwback to early teams named after letters of the NATO alphabet.
The AI labs picked up the title next. OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineering team “partners with customers to turn research breakthroughs into production systems.” Anthropic is hiring its first FDE manager to build out its own team.

Skills and background employers ask for
Requirements vary by level, but the postings agree on five things:
- Several years of engineering experience. OpenAI asks for 5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience that includes customer-facing work. Anthropic’s London role asks for 4+ years in a technical, customer-facing role. Google’s mid-level FDE III role asks for 5 years of software development, and SpaceXSI asks for 5+ years. Palantir’s New York FDSE role asks for just 1+ years after college.
- Strong coding, mostly Python. OpenAI, Anthropic and SpaceXSI all name Python, and each also mentions JavaScript or TypeScript.
- Hands-on LLM work. Anthropic wants “Production experience with LLMs including advanced prompt engineering, agent development, evaluation frameworks, and deployment at scale.” Google asks for retrieval (RAG) pipelines built on vector databases, and prefers experience with multi-agent frameworks such as LangGraph, CrewAI and ADK.
- Customer and communication skills. SpaceXSI puts it simply: “You can talk to working engineers and to a VP.”
- A degree, or equivalent experience. Google and Anthropic both accept equivalent experience in place of a bachelor’s degree.
Anthropic adds that “Former technical founders are also encouraged to apply,” and calls a background in financial services, healthcare or life sciences a plus.

SpaceXSI’s FDE posting on Cursor’s careers site doesn’t print a pay range, so it isn’t in the table. These are the ranges each employer published, not a promise: offers depend on level, location and the interview.
Forward deployed engineer vs software engineer
Palantir’s blog sums it up. A software engineer’s focus is “one capability, many customers,” while a forward deployed engineer’s focus is “one customer, many capabilities.” Software engineers build the product. FDEs make it work inside one customer’s business, and Palantir’s blog notes that some also contribute code back to the core product.
The title “forward deployed software engineer” can mean different things. At Palantir it’s the main FDE title. At OpenAI, Forward Deployed Software Engineers work alongside FDEs and “design abstractions” that speed up delivery across all of OpenAI’s forward deployed engagements. That posting asks for 7+ years of full-stack experience.
Forward deployed engineer vs solutions engineer
In these postings, solutions engineers and architects mostly advise, demo and drive adoption, while FDEs own the build. The employers draw the line clearly:
- Anthropic calls its Applied AI Architects “Pre-Sales” architects and trusted technical advisors who build prototypes and proofs of concept. Its FDEs build production applications inside customer systems.
- SpaceXSI calls its Solutions Architect job “a deeply technical, post-sale role” built around rolling out Cursor and running enablement sessions. Its FDE posting says, “This is not a demo role.”
- Google tells FDE applicants, “Unlike traditional advisory roles, you will function as an innovator-builder.”
Is there a forward deployed engineer certification?
Not one that employers ask for. None of the FDE postings we read lists a certification as a requirement. Training companies sell their own: Blockchain Council, for example, lists a “Certified Forward Deployed Engineer” credential for $249. Treat those as optional learning, not a hiring requirement.
The closest thing from an AI company is SpaceXSI’s Forward Deployed Engineer accreditation, launched with its Grok Partner Network on October 22, 2026. SpaceXSI says engineers at more than 30 organizations have been trained through it. It’s aimed at Transformation Partners, the consultancies and systems integrators that “deliver enterprise professional services through forward deployed engineers.” SpaceXSI hasn’t published who can enroll, the curriculum, whether there’s an exam or what it costs, and we found no way for an individual to sign up. Our Grok Partner Network guide covers what is known.
How to become a forward deployed engineer
For most people this isn’t a first job, since most postings want four or five years of experience. Here’s an honest path.
1. Get good at shipping production code
Work as a software engineer who ships and supports real systems. Python plus JavaScript or TypeScript covers most postings.
2. Build and ship real LLM projects
Build an agent, a retrieval pipeline with evaluations, or an MCP server, and get real people using it. Anthropic’s Staff FDE posting says that for LLM and agent experience, “Side projects and prototypes count.”
3. Get customer-facing experience
Consulting, solutions engineering, technical support and startups all build this. OpenAI’s FDSE posting calls being a “Former founder, or early engineer at a startup” a plus.
4. Use the doors open to new grads
Palantir hires new-grad FDSEs: its New York posting wants people graduating in December 2026 or spring 2027. Google’s Summer 2027 FDE internship takes applications until November 20, 2026. If you already work at a consulting firm or systems integrator, watch its partner programs: SpaceXSI trains partner engineers through its accreditation, and Google’s Partner FDEs work with partner teams.
5. Write your resume around outcomes
FDE postings care about results. SpaceXSI asks its FDEs to measure “revenue, cost, hours saved, error rate, cycle time, escaped defects.” Put numbers like those on your resume, then paste it and an FDE posting into our free AI resume checker to see how well they match.
Your next step
Pick two or three FDE postings from the companies above and list each requirement. Mark where you’re strong and where you’re not, then close your biggest gap with one shipped project you can walk an interviewer through.
Pay ranges, requirements and program details come from each employer’s own careers pages and blogs, checked October 23, 2026. Postings change often, so check the live page before you apply.
