How to cancel a ChatGPT subscription depends on where you signed up: on chatgpt.com, through Apple on an iPhone or iPad, or through Google Play on Android. You have to cancel in that same place, and uninstalling the app doesn’t cancel anything. This free helper gives you the exact steps for your setup, what you keep after canceling, and the refund rules in OpenAI’s own words. It covers Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity too.

How to cancel ChatGPT Plus, Go or Pro
On the web: sign in to ChatGPT, open your account menu and select Settings, then Billing. Under Cancel plan, select Cancel.
On an iPhone or iPad: open the Settings app, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, tap ChatGPT, then tap Cancel Subscription. If there’s no Cancel button and you see an expiration date, it’s already canceled.
On Android: open the Google Play Store app, go to Subscriptions, select ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription.
Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date. After you cancel, OpenAI says paid features stay available until the end of the current billing period.
Does canceling get you a refund?
No. Canceling stops future charges but doesn’t refund past ones. OpenAI says payments are generally non-refundable, with exceptions: a discretionary refund may be possible for an unused individual subscription if you ask within seven days of the charge, and people in the EU, UK and Turkey can get a prorated refund if they cancel within 14 days of purchase. If you subscribed through Apple, the refund request goes to Apple, not OpenAI.
Refund rules compared
| Service | General rule | Notable windows |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Generally non-refundable | Possibly within 7 days if unused; 14 days, prorated, in the EU, UK and Turkey |
| Claude | Non-refundable except as its terms or the law require | 14 days in the EEA and UK, prorated by use |
| Google AI plans | Non-refundable in most countries | App Store purchases are refunded by Apple |
| Microsoft 365 | In most cases, a refund within 30 days of first purchase or before the first renewal | Premium and Pro: prorated within 14 days in most countries |
| Perplexity | 24 hours after purchase (monthly), 72 hours (annual) | 14 days in the EU, UK and Turkey; 7 days in South Korea and Brazil |
Check the company’s own page for your country before you count on a refund. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.
Mistakes that keep the charges coming
- Deleting the app. Uninstalling ChatGPT doesn’t cancel your subscription, and Google Play says the same for any Android app.
- Deleting your account. Deleting your ChatGPT account doesn’t cancel an Apple subscription, and deleting a Perplexity account doesn’t cancel its subscription at all.
- Two subscriptions. Signing up on the web and again in the app can mean two charges. Check both places.
- Canceling too late. OpenAI and Anthropic both say to cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date.
- The wrong store account. Apple and Google bill the account you paid with. Check every Apple ID or Google account you use.

Frequently asked questions
Why can't I cancel my ChatGPT subscription in the app?
You have to cancel where you subscribed. If you signed up on chatgpt.com, cancel there under Settings > Billing. If you subscribed in the iPhone app, Apple manages it, so cancel in your iPhone's Settings > your name > Subscriptions. On Android, cancel in Google Play > Subscriptions.
If I cancel ChatGPT Plus, do I lose access right away?
No. OpenAI says paid features stay available until the end of your current billing period. Access ends earlier only if you're granted a refund.
Can I get a refund on ChatGPT Plus?
Payments are generally non-refundable, but OpenAI may give a discretionary refund for an unused subscription if you ask within seven days of the charge. In the EU, UK and Turkey you can get a prorated refund within 14 days of purchase, and App Store purchases are refunded by Apple.
Does deleting my ChatGPT account cancel my subscription?
It cancels a subscription billed directly by ChatGPT, but not one billed through Apple. If you subscribed through Apple or Google Play, cancel in the store first.
How do I cancel Claude Pro?
On the web or desktop app, click your initials or name, open Settings, go to Billing and click Cancel. In the iPhone or Android app, tap your initials, then Billing, then Manage subscription.
