Is Outlier AI Legit? What It Pays and What to Watch For

Yes, Outlier is a legitimate platform. It’s run by Scale AI, a large San Francisco AI data company, and it pays its contractors every week. But legit isn’t the same as steady. You’re a contractor with no guaranteed work, Outlier can hold your pay or close your account at its own discretion, and it has a record of pay complaints and a wage lawsuit that is close to a settlement. Here’s what we found on Outlier’s own pages, in court records and in news reports.

Who runs Outlier

Outlier says it’s operated by Scale AI. Its Terms of Use (effective May 11, 2026) are a contract with Scale AI, Inc. and its affiliates, including Smart Ecosystem Inc., which does business as Outlier AI. The same terms cover Remotasks, Scale’s older work platform, which no longer takes new sign-ups from the US and sends US applicants to Outlier.

Scale AI was founded in 2016 and is based in San Francisco. In June 2025 Meta invested in Scale at a valuation of over $29 billion. CNBC reported the deal as a 49% stake for $14.3 billion with no voting power, and Scale’s founder, Alexandr Wang, left to join Meta. Reuters reported in July 2026 that former Google Cloud executive Francis deSouza would become Scale’s CEO on August 10, 2026.

One thing that muddies reviews: a different, unrelated company also called Outlier AI (founded in 2015, closed in 2022) still collects complaints meant for this one, Inc. reported. Check that a review is about outlier.ai.

How Outlier works

  • Applying: you need a government ID, a mobile phone from your country, a resume and a LinkedIn profile.
  • Onboarding: 30 to 90 minutes of account setup, skill screenings and ID checks. Each project then has its own guidelines and assessment tasks.
  • The work: writing hard prompts with correct answers, writing grading rubrics, and rating and ranking AI answers. Projects may not match your field.
  • Who they want: subject experts, usually with at least undergraduate-level knowledge. Grad students and people with a master’s or PhD are preferred, and English is required. (Its FAQ says at least an associate degree; its homepage says undergraduate-level expertise.)
  • The terms: you’re an independent contractor, 18 or older, with no minimum hours and no visa sponsorship.

What Outlier pays, and how you get paid

Outlier says rates vary by expertise, project complexity and location, and you see the rate before you start a project. Examples on its About page: up to $50 an hour for biology, $40 for graphic design, $27.50 for coding and $15 for English writing.

  • Payday: weekly on Tuesdays, for work from the previous Tuesday to Monday (midnight UTC).
  • Methods: PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer, to an account in your own name.
  • Taxes: nothing is withheld, so you handle your own taxes.
  • The fine print: Outlier can delay pay during a compliance review, and it can withhold some or all earned pay and close your account for rule violations, as it judges them.
  • Disputes: US workers agree to individual arbitration, but you can opt out within 30 days of accepting the terms.

Your ID photos and video are kept for up to two years after your last activity, according to its privacy policy.

Complaints and lawsuits

  • Pay complaints (2024): Inc. reported in June 2024 that workers described trouble getting paid, slow onboarding and unpaid tests, and that recruiters quoted shifting rates. Scale did not respond to Inc.
  • Wage lawsuit (settling): McKinney v. Scale AI, a California case over worker classification and wages, has a $12.5 million settlement with preliminary court approval. The final approval hearing is October 30, 2026. Scale denies wrongdoing.
  • Harmful-content lawsuit (dropped): six Outlier workers sued in January 2025 over psychological harm from writing violent and abusive prompts. They dismissed the case in August 2026, and the filing mentions no settlement.
  • Labor Department review (closed): the US Department of Labor dropped its investigation into Scale’s pay and worker classification in May 2025, TechCrunch reported.
  • Cutbacks (2025): Scale laid off about 14% of its staff and about 500 contractors in July 2025, mostly in its data-labeling business. That summer OpenAI wound down its work with Scale, and Reuters reported Google was cutting ties.

You’ll also see posts about empty task queues, rate cuts and sudden removal from projects. We couldn’t confirm those as a pattern in reliable reporting, but Outlier’s terms do allow it to remove you from projects and close accounts.

How to spot a fake Outlier offer

  • Outlier’s own sites are outlier.ai and app.outlier.ai. Apply and log in only there.
  • Outlier’s community rules ban pretending to be platform staff and buying or selling accounts. Anyone selling an “approved Outlier account” is breaking the rules, and you’d lose the account.
  • Outlier pays you. Nothing in its terms or FAQ charges a fee to join, so anyone asking you for money is not Outlier.
  • Got a message about an Outlier job by text, WhatsApp or Telegram? Paste it into our free job scam checker before you reply.

Should you sign up?

If you have a degree or expertise in a subject Outlier is hiring for, it’s a real way to earn by the hour from home, and it pays weekly. Treat it as side income, not a job: join two or three platforms so a quiet week on one doesn’t leave you with nothing. Compare Outlier with DataAnnotation, Mercor, Alignerr and others on our AI training jobs page, which quotes what each one pays from its own site.
